My name Whyre comes from the word “Wire”, inspired by the TV series The Wire, which I was a big fan of.
The idea of “wire” also means being wired, connected, like being plugged in. For me, it represents being connected to hip-hop culture and graffiti, both mentally and creatively.

I also chose this name because the letters flow really well together. They fit perfectly with my style and allow me to create smooth, connected letter structures, which is very important in my work. The 87 comes from my year of birth.

Mi nombre, Whyre, viene de la palabra «Wire», inspirada en la serie de televisión The Wire, de la que era gran fan. La idea de «wire» también significa estar conectado, enchufado. Para mí, representa estar conectado con la cultura hip-hop y el graffiti, tanto mental como creativamente.

También elegí este nombre porque las letras fluyen muy bien juntas. Encajan perfectamente con mi estilo y me permiten crear estructuras de letras suaves y conectadas, lo cual es muy importante en mi trabajo. El 87 proviene de mi año de nacimiento.

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Empecé muy joven, cuando tenía 9 años. Mi hermano mayor acababa de empezar a hacer graffitis y, al principio, yo lo imitaba, como hacen muchos niños. Pero con el tiempo, se convirtió en algo más serio. Seguí practicando, aprendiendo y mejorando, y nunca dejé de hacerlo. Hoy tengo 37 años y el graffiti ha sido una parte constante de mi vida.

Al principio, era realmente algo infantil, lúdico y espontáneo. Con el tiempo, se convirtió en algo mucho más profundo: un verdadero compromiso artístico, una forma de expresarme y crecer creativamente.

I started very young, when I was 9 years old. My older brother had just begun writing graffiti, and at first I followed him by imitation, like many kids do. But over time, it became more serious. I kept practicing, learning, and improving, and I never stopped. Today I’m 37 years old, and graffiti has been a constant part of my life.

At the beginning, it was really a childhood thing, playful and spontaneous. With time, it evolved into something much deeper — a real artistic commitment, a way to express myself and grow creatively.

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Lo que más me gusta del graffiti es la libertad que me da y el acto de crear en sí mismo. Cuando pinto, realmente libero mi mente. Es un momento en el que me dejo llevar, me expreso y me siento verdaderamente libre.

Crear es esencial para mí: se trata de hacer algo con mi vida, construir algo real y convertir las ideas en algo visible. Cuando pinto, hago exactamente lo que quiero, sin límites ni restricciones.

Lo que menos me gusta es cuando el graffiti pierde este espíritu y se convierte solo en ego, competencia o tendencias. Para mí, el graffiti debe seguir siendo honesto, personal e impulsado por la necesidad de crear.

What I like most about graffiti is the freedom it gives me and the act of creating itself. When I paint, I really free my mind. It’s a moment where I let go, express myself, and feel truly free.
Creating is essential for me — it’s about doing something with my life, building something real, and turning ideas into something visible. When I paint, I do exactly what I want, without limits or constraints.

What I like less is when graffiti loses this spirit and becomes only about ego, competition, or trends. For me, graffiti should remain honest, personal, and driven by the need to create.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Sí, lo recuerdo muy bien. Mi primer graffiti lo pinté en el centro comunitario juvenil de mi barrio en Ginebra. Los monitores me apoyaron e incluso me dieron algo de dinero para que pudiera comprar mis primeros botes de spray y pintar en un muro legal del centro.

Al principio, era realmente malo: mis trazos no eran limpios, no eran precisos en absoluto, y me costaba mucho manejar el bote de spray. Recuerdo que me sentía bastante decepcionado con la calidad de mis contornos.
Sin embargo, ya tenía cierta fluidez en mis letras, porque llevaba varios años dibujando en papel. Ese momento fue importante. Aunque el resultado no fue muy bueno, me hizo darme cuenta de la diferencia entre el papel y las paredes, y me animó a seguir practicando. Ahora, mirando atrás, veo lo mucho que han evolucionado mi estilo, mi técnica y mi confianza desde entonces.

Yes, I remember it very well. My first graffiti piece was painted at the youth community center in my neighborhood in Geneva. The youth workers supported me and even gave me some money so I could buy my first spray cans and paint on a legal expression wall at the center.

At the beginning, it was really bad — my lines were not clean, not precise at all, and I struggled a lot with the spray can. I remember being quite disappointed with the quality of my outlines.
However, I already had some flow in my letters, because I had been sketching on paper for a few years before that. That moment was important. Even if the result wasn’t great, it made me realize the difference between paper and walls, and it pushed me to keep practicing. Looking back now, I can see how much my style, technique, and confidence have evolved since then.

Mucho respeto a todos los que mantienen vivo el graffiti, ya sea en las calles, en las paredes o en los estudios.
Mantén la curiosidad, mantén la humildad y, lo más importante… ¡sigue pintando con placer y disfruta de la vida!
