Asick

I got into graffiti because a friend I rode BMX with was writing. I was also inspired by the graffiti I saw in Australia and the dope masterpieces at the ‘Mokuzaiko’ spot in Hiroshima.

Me metí en el mundo del graffiti porque un amigo con el que montaba en BMX se dedicaba a ello. También me inspiraron los graffitis que vi en Australia y las impresionantes obras maestras del lugar conocido como «Mokuzaiko», en Hiroshima.

  

¿De dónde viene tu apodo? 

Where does your pseudonym come from?

El nombre ASICK viene de algo que pasó en 2018, cuando estaba en Australia de vacaciones de trabajo. Tuve una discusión con mi jefe en la tienda de ramen donde trabajaba y me llamó «SICK» (enfermo). Eso se me quedó grabado. La «A» la puse sin ningún motivo en particular.

The name ASICK comes from something that happened back in 2018, when I was in Australia on a working holiday. I got into an argument with my boss at the ramen shop I was working at, and he called me ‘SICK’ That stuck with me. The ‘A’ was just thrown in for no real reason.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Lo que más me gusta es ese momento en el que mi obra empieza a transformarse en algo mucho más cercano a mi estilo mientras trabajo en ella. Me encanta todo el proceso de convertirla en algo nuevo. Y cuando pinto en una pared real, siempre hay una diferencia entre el boceto y el resultado final, sea bueno o malo, y eso es parte de la diversión.

Lo que menos me gusta es verme envuelto en peleas. Ver cómo se pelean otros puede ser bastante divertido, pero odio cuando me toca a mí.

What I most is that moment when my piece starts shifting into something way closer to my style while I’m working on it. I love the whole process of flipping it into something new. And when I paint on a real wall, there’s always a gap between the sketch and how it actually turns out － good or bad － and that’s part of the fun.

What I like least is getting dragged into beef over overs or bombs. Watching other people beef can be kinda funny, but I hate when that shit comes my way.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Empecé a hacer graffitis alrededor del verano de 2021, y creo que mi primera obra real fue algo así como un throw-up alargado que hice en un pilar de un puente ese invierno. Utilicé varios colores, pero, sinceramente, quedó bastante mal.

Poco después, me di cuenta de que el lugar contiguo era un túnel que nadie había tocado, así que empecé a ir allí. Fue entonces cuando pintar obras empezó a resultarme realmente divertido.

I started doing graffiti around the summer of 2021, and I think my first actual piece was something like a stretched-out throw-up I did on a bridge pillar that winter. I used a few colors, but honestly it looked pretty terrible.

A little later, I realized the spot next to it was a tunnel nobody had touched, so I started going there. That’s when painting pieces really started to get fun for me.

And finally, anything you want to say?

Internet es genial porque puedes publicar tu trabajo y conectar con montones de escritores, e incluso con gente ajena al mundillo, pero sigo queriendo mantener vivo el lado del mundo real.

Todavía estoy aprendiendo, pero quiero salir de mi zona, visitar otras prefecturas y otros países, pintar obras con diferentes escritores e ir juntos a hacer graffitis. No sé cuánto tiempo me quedaré en Hiroshima, pero si alguna vez pasas por aquí, pongámonos en contacto y pintemos juntos.

The internet’s great because you can put your work out there and connect with tons of writers － and even people outside the scene － but I still want to keep the real-world side alive.

I’m still learning, but I want to get out of my area, hit other prefectures and other countries, paint pieces with different writers, and go bombing together. No idea how long I’m staying Hiroshima, but if you ever swing by, let’s definitely link up and paint.
