Shub110

Shub has been my nickname since 2004. Friends from that time gave it to me as a reference to the character Chewbacca from Star Wars. It was first pronounced “Chewb,” and more recently “Shub.” “110” (or one ten) is a concept I created within the Street BikeTrial community. I practiced this sport intensely between 1998-2002 and 2015-2022, while also running an Instagram account dedicated to showcasing the different riders and contributors of the scene.

In pure trial riding, people used to measure the height of the obstacles they cleared. It turned into a ridiculous race for centimeters. So the concept was simple. The steezy rider bunny-hopping his first 40 cm wall = 110cm. The comp minded athlete side-hopping 146.7 cm in a legging = 110cm. A large part of the community adopted the concept, and it became a well-known hashtag in our scene: #everything110. When I got back into sketching, I needed a name, and choosing Shub 110 came naturally.

Shub es mi apodo desde 2004. Me lo pusieron mis amigos de aquella época en referencia al personaje Chewbacca de Star Wars. Al principio se pronunciaba «Chewb» y, más recientemente, «Shub». «110» (o uno diez) es un concepto que creé dentro de la comunidad Street BikeTrial. Practiqué este deporte intensamente entre 1998-2002 y 2015-2022, al tiempo que gestionaba una cuenta de Instagram dedicada a mostrar a los diferentes riders y colaboradores de la escena.

En el trial puro, la gente solía medir la altura de los obstáculos que superaban. Se convirtió en una ridícula carrera por centímetros. Así que el concepto era sencillo. El ciclista elegante que saltaba su primer muro de 40 cm = 110 cm. El atleta competitivo que saltaba 146,7 cm con una pierna = 110 cm. Gran parte de la comunidad adoptó el concepto y se convirtió en un hashtag muy conocido en nuestro ámbito: #everything110. Cuando volví a dibujar, necesitaba un nombre y elegir Shub 110 me resultó natural.

What motivated you to get started painting?

Varias cosas, en realidad.

Llegué a la ciudad en 2001, cuando aún era un niño de 13 años. Descubrí el graffiti en las paredes, el ambiente de la ciudad, las luces, las nuevas interacciones y la libertad.

Era genial explorar y recorrer en bicicleta las calles y plazas, los lugares abandonados o las obras en construcción. Conocí cada rincón de esta pequeña ciudad. Conseguí cómics y revistas como GraffBombz y Radikal, y poco a poco fui aprendiendo sobre este rico universo, sus subculturas, y empecé a dibujar mucho. Sin salir a pintar (excepto una vez). En 2023, tras varias lesiones en el hombro, dejé de montar en bicicleta de trial. Necesitaba una nueva salida, nuevas motivaciones.

Me fijé en mis Promarkers de 15 años y decidí volver a intentarlo. Un año después, mi hermano me sugirió que fuéramos a pintar algo. Era solo la segunda vez que cogía un bote de spray, y fue entonces cuando me enganché. A pesar de las dificultades. La capacidad de expresar o evocar emociones, de despertar la curiosidad a través de los colores, también me motiva mucho. Es como hablar un lenguaje universal.

Several things, actually.

I arrived in the city in 2001, when I was still a 13 years old kid.
Discovering graffiti on the walls, the city’s atmosphere, the lights, the new interactions and the freedom.
It was great to explore and ride my bike around streets and plazas, abandoned places or construction sites. Learning every corner of this small town.
I got my hands on comics and magazines like GraffBombz and Radikal, slowly learning about this rich universe, its subcultures, and I started drawing a lot. Without going out to paint (except once).

In 2023, after several shoulder injuries, I stopped riding street trials bikes. I needed a new outlet. new motivations.
My 15-year-old Promarkers has come to my attention and I decided to give it a go again. One year later, my brother suggested we go paint something. It was only the second time I had ever held a spray can, and that’s when I got hooked. Though the struggle. The ability to express or evoke emotions, to spark curiosity through colours, also motivates me really. It’s like speaking a universal language.

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Conocer gente nueva y descubrir nuevos lugares es una parte importante. Me encanta que una obra pueda alegrarle el día a alguien o pasar totalmente desapercibida. Hacer sonreír a la gente o conmoverla con un mensaje. El mundo del graffiti es nuevo para mí, pero la comunidad es genial. Por otro lado, es una locura recibir el apoyo en las redes sociales de artistas cuyo trabajo me impresionó cuando era niño, ¡e incluso que me compartan aquí!.
Descubrir la comunidad del graffiti es increíble.

Lo que menos me gusta es frotarme las manos cada vez que pinto porque siempre me olvido los guantes… Hablando en serio, los gases tóxicos y el impacto medioambiental son problemas reales, y aún no hay muchas alternativas.

Meeting new people and finding new spots is a big part of it. I love the fact that a piece can make someone’s day, or totally be hidden. Put smiles on faces or shake people up with a message. This world of spray painting is new to me, but the community is dope. Local painters are well active, and some of them became good friends. Big up Maps, Nero, Lenap

On the other hand, it’s crazy getting support on socials from artists whose work blew my mind when I was a kid, even getting reposted here!
Discovering the graffiti community is awesome.

What I like the least, it’s scrubbing my hands every time I paint because I always forget my gloves.. More seriously though, the toxic fumes and the environmental impact are real issues, and there aren’t many alternatives yet.

Do you remember the first piece?

Allá por 2002.

Tomaba prestadas letras aquí y allá. Hacía muchos dibujos, pero me costaba crear mis propias letras y comprender realmente el proceso. Todavía era un niño y no tenía dinero para comprar botes de spray. Me centré en dibujar letras y personajes.

Solo había un lugar que ofrecía impresionantes producciones de EMA, ARSET, RESH, IGGY…
Fue como seis meses después del 11 de septiembre, mi amigo y yo decidimos usar ese tema y fuimos a comprar nuestro primer spray. Yo pinté un SOME azul y negro. Mi amigo pintó un personaje.
La sensación era intensa, al igual que el ambiente, pero nos costó mucho. Un escritor mayor nos dio consejos sobre cómo sujetar el bote de spray y cómo llenarlo correctamente.

Salimos a comprar una cámara desechable y, cuando volvimos, el mismo chico que nos había ayudado había jugado con nuestras piezas. Nunca volvimos a verlo y, después de eso, no volví a tocar un bote de spray en años. No por culpa de ese chico raro, sino porque era caro, yo no robaba y el vandalismo no me atraía. En aquella época me dediqué a los cómics, hasta que unos años más tarde dejé de dibujar para aprender a tocar la guitarra.

Back in 2002.

I was borrowing letters here and there. Lots of drawings, but I struggled to create my own letters and truly understand the process. I was still a kid, with no money to buy spray cans. I focused on drawing letters and characters.

There was only one spot that featured impressive productions by EMA, ARSET, RESH, IGGY…
It was like 6 months after the 11th of September, my friend and I decided to use that theme and went to buy our first spray ever. I painted a blue and black SOME. My friend painted a character.
The feeling was intense, and so was the atmosphere, but we struggled. An older writer gave us advice on how to hold the spray can and how to fill properly.
We left to buy a disposable camera, and when we returned, the same guy who had helped us had toyed our pieces. We never saw him again, and after that, I didn’t touch a spray can for years. Not because of this weird guy, but it was expensive, I didn’t steal, and vandalism didn’t appeal to me. I turned to comics at that time, until I eventually stopped drawing a few years later to learn guitar.

Desde este resurgimiento del dibujo en 2023, he empezado a comprender mejor el estilo que ya me gustaba por aquel entonces: letras y fondos salvajes en 3D utilizando diferentes herramientas. Mi trabajo consiste en dar forma a los materiales como constructor de pumptracks, lo que sin duda me ha ayudado a comprender los ángulos y a detectar los errores.

Hoy en día, sigo perfeccionando mis letras, mezclándolas con entornos minerales detallados influenciados por el diseño de niveles de videojuegos y la cultura pop.
Trabajar con la luz y las formas es fascinante, y estoy deseando ver qué me depara el futuro con esta pasión recién descubierta, ¡y conocer a gente nueva haciendo jams!.

Since this drawing resurgence in 2023, I have started to better understand the style that already resonated with me back then: 3D wild letters and backgrounds using different tools. My job involves shaping materials as a pumptrack builder; it has definitely helped me understand angles, and spotting mistakes.
Today, I continue to refine my letters, blending them with detailed, mineral environments influenced by video game level design and pop culture.
Working with light and shapes is fascinating, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds with this newly unlocked passion, and to meet new people doing jams!
