¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Cuando empecé a hacer graffiti, tenía varios nombres, pero no sabía nada del mundo de la escritura de graffiti ni del Hip Hop. Así que crecí buscándolo, desde que vi a un escritor local pintando una pieza debajo de mi colegio de primaria. Nunca tuve contacto con esa persona, así que seguí creciendo en busca de graffiti.
Al final, cuando por fin lo descubrí, entendí que había que escribir tu nombre y evolucionar las letras. Así que elegí algunas letras que me gustaban, las junté, las mezclé y lo que salió es mi nombre: Rota.
When I started doing graffiti, I had several names, but I didn’t know anything about the world of graffiti writing or Hip Hop. So I grew up searching for it, ever since I saw a local writer painting a piece under my elementary school. I never had any contact with that person, so I kept growing up looking for graffiti.
Eventually, when I finally discovered it, I understood that you had to write your name and evolve the letters. So I chose some letters I liked, put them together, mixed them up, and what came out is my name: Rota.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Salía del colegio con mi padre, que había venido a recogerme, y vi a un tipo trabajando en un graffiti con una mezcla de materiales: botes de spray, pintura, pinceles. Recuerdo que el contorno estaba hecho con una brocha ancha, negra, supernegra, y desde ese momento me impactó por completo. A partir de entonces, crecí buscando constantemente ese material.
I was coming out of school with my dad, who had come to pick me up, and I saw this guy working on a graffiti piece using a mix of materials—spray cans, paint, brushes. I remember the outline was done with a wide brush, black—super black—and from that moment on, I was completely struck by it. From then on, I grew up constantly searching for that stuff.
¿Cuál es tu estilo?
What is your style?
Definitivamente, una mezcla de cosas que me gustan, cosas que incluso podrían chocar entre sí. ¿Qué quiero decir con esto? Siempre me han atraído mucho las formas de la escuela alemana de los años 90 -formas rígidas y dinámicas- y nunca sentí tanta curiosidad por el estilo neoyorquino, con sus flechas, bucles y estilo salvaje.
Pero al mismo tiempo, siempre me han fascinado las formas en general, así que incluso el mundo de los «throw-ups» y las letras suaves y redondeadas me ha inspirado e interesado. En cierto momento de mi trayectoria, empecé a intentar fusionar esas dos influencias, tratando de mantener formas rígidas y suaves al mismo tiempo. Algo agresivo, pero no demasiado. Algo que también sea visualmente agradable y accesible para los demás.
Intento que ese equilibrio se refleje no sólo en la estructura de las letras, sino también en el uso del color y en la forma de jugar con las combinaciones cromáticas.
Definitely a mix of things I like—things that might even clash with each other. What do I mean by that? I’ve always been strongly drawn to the shapes of the German school from the ’90s—rigid, dynamic forms—and I was never that curious about the New York style, with its arrows, loops, and wild style.
But at the same time, I’ve always been fascinated by shapes in general, so even the world of “throw-ups” and soft, rounded letters has inspired and interested me. At a certain point in my journey, I started trying to merge those two influences—aiming to keep forms that are both rigid and soft at the same time. Something aggressive, but not too much. Something that’s also visually pleasant and approachable for others.
I try to bring that balance out not just in the structure of the letters, but also through my use of color and the way I play with color combinations.

Bueno, eso está muy bien. Estoy muy agradecido por ello. Siempre es agradable cuando tu arte es apreciado y otras personas quieren compartirlo. Sobre todo cuando lo hace gente que lleva tantos años apoyando la cultura, el movimiento y el crecimiento de este increíble mundo que es la escritura de graffiti.
Well, that’s really cool. I’m truly grateful for it. It’s always nice when your art is appreciated and other people want to share it. Especially when it’s done by people who have been supporting the culture, the movement, and the growth of this amazing world that is graffiti writing for so many years.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Claro que me acuerdo. Creo que fue en febrero de 2000, quizá. El muro estaba un poco escondido, en el centro de mi barrio. Por aquel entonces, estaba probando el nombre de Zef One e hice este pequeño y feo dibujo, sólo «Ze», relleno de verde con contornos azules. Recuerdo que añadí reflejos cromados plateados, que básicamente borraron casi todo lo que había hecho.
Of course I remember. I think it was February 2000, maybe. The wall was a bit hidden, in the center of my neighborhood. At the time, I was trying out this name Zef One and I did this small, really ugly throw-up, just “Ze,” filled in green with blue outlines. I remember I added silver chrome highlights, which basically erased almost everything I had done.
