¿De dónde viene tu firma?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

En cuanto a la firma de Riam, es una combinación… de diferentes letras y nombres que solía escribir cuando empecé a hacer graffitis. Estas letras encajaban muy bien entre sí, lo que me permitía crear estilos geniales.

As for tag Riam, it’s a combination… of different letters and names that I used to write back when I started doing graffiti. These letters connected best together in a way that allowed me to create cool styles.

 

 

 

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Crecí durante la era poscomunista. Todo en Polonia era gris, desde los bloques de apartamentos hasta las calles. Mi hermano y yo solíamos montar en monopatín, y recuerdo cuando trajo a casa nuestra primera revista de skateboarding en 1996, creo que era Skateboarding Magazine.

En aquella época, cualquier cosa que representara la libertad me llamaba la atención al instante. El skateboarding y el graffiti eran algo nuevo y realmente destacaban sobre el fondo gris de la gente y los edificios. Así fue como acabé comprando mis primeros botes de spray y empecé a cambiar el aspecto de mi ciudad.

Sentía una increíble sensación de comodidad al pintar letras en las paredes. Había descubierto algo que la gente corriente de los años 90 no podía entender, y fue el graffiti lo que me dio esa sensación de libertad.

I grew up during the post-communist era. Everything in Poland was gray — from the apartment blocks to the streets. My brother and I used to ride skateboards, and I remember when he brought home our first skateboarding magazine in 1996 — I think it was Skateboarding Magazine.

Back then, anything that represented freedom instantly caught my attention. Skateboarding and graffiti were both something new, and they really stood out against the gray backdrop of people and buildings. That’s how I ended up buying my first spray cans and started changing the look of my city.

I felt an incredible sense of comfort when painting letters on walls. I had discovered something that ordinary people in the ’90s couldn’t understand — and it was graffiti that gave me that feeling of freedom.

 

 

 

¿Qué es lo que mas te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Me encantan todas las formas de graffiti, desde los platas en las calles hasta las letras en los trenes, pasando por las obras a todo color en los salones de la fama. Cada una te ofrece una forma diferente de impulsar tu estilo y desarrollar tus letras.

Viajar con mis letras es algo que también disfruto mucho: poder pintar en cualquier parte del mundo, dejar una huella, es una sensación increíble.

Lo único que realmente odio… ¡es quedarme sin pintura! Jaja.

I love all forms of graffiti — from chrome tags on the streets, to letters on trains, to full-color pieces on hall of fames. Each one gives you a different way to push your style and evolve your letters.

Traveling with my letters is something I enjoy a lot too — being able to paint anywhere in the world, leave a mark, that’s a dope feeling.

The only thing I really hate… is running out of paint! Haha.

Tengo mucho respeto y aprecio por plataformas como esta. Felicitaciones a las personas que dedican su tiempo a apoyar a otros escritores, promocionarlos y mostrar su estilo al mundo. Creo que es algo que la escena del graffiti realmente necesita, ya que ayuda a impulsar la cultura.

Así que, enhorabuena, y espero que sigas haciendo cosas tan geniales en el futuro.

I’ve got a lot of respect and appreciation for platforms like this. Big props to the people who spend their time supporting other writers, promoting them, and showing their style to the world. I think it’s something the graffiti scene really needs — it helps push the culture forward.

So big up to you, and I hope you keep doing more dope stuff in the future.

 

 

 

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Por supuesto que lo recuerdo. Era a finales del año 1996. Una de las paredes de mi barrio, por la noche, hormigón gris. Estaba pintando mi primer nombre: ¡RES!

En aquella época, la pintura que se podía conseguir en Polonia era de muy mala calidad, así que recuerdo claramente lo difíciles que fueron aquellas primeras batallas con las letras en la pared.

Of course I remember. It was the end of ’96. One of the walls in my neighborhood, evening hours, gray concrete. I was painting my very first name — RES!

Back then, the paint you could get in Poland was super low quality, so I remember clearly how tough those first battles with letters on the wall were.

And finally, anything you want to say?

Estamos viviendo tiempos bastante extraños, y espero que el graffiti nos ayude a mantenernos fieles a nosotros mismos, a cuidarnos unos a otros y a seguir mostrando nuestro apoyo.

We’re living in some pretty strange times, and I hope graffiti helps us stay true to ourselves — to look out for one another and keep showing support.
