¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

Mi apodo viene de mi nombre, Gianella. Desde pequeña me decían “Nela” o “Giane”, pero conecté más con “Nela” porque es sencillo y fácil de recordar. Con el tiempo se volvió mi identidad en el arte y en la calle.

My nickname comes from my first name, Gianella. Ever since I was little, people have called me “Nela” or “Giane,” but I connected more with “Nela” because it’s simple and easy to remember. Over time, it became my identity both in the art world and on the street.

 

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Desde pequeña ver paredes con graffiti me llamó la atención, las letras, los personajes, la energía de la calle. Comencé a dibujar en papel en el colegio y desde ahí no paré hasta que con el tiempo comencé a pintar en las calles. El graffiti para mí también es superar mis miedos, cada vez que uso los sprays siento libertad, es algo que realmente me conecta conmigo misma.

Ever since I was little, seeing walls covered in graffiti caught my attention—the letters, the characters, the energy of the street. I started drawing on paper in school, and from there I never stopped until, over time, I began painting on the streets. For me, graffiti is also about overcoming my fears; every time I use the spray cans, I feel a sense of freedom—it’s something that truly connects me with myself.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos? 

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Lo que más me gusta del graffiti es la libertad de pintar y ser tú mismo a través de tu estilo y tu propuesta. También me gusta que te abre puertas ya que puedes conocer gente de todo el mundo, viajar y compartir tu arte en distintos lugares inimaginables. El graffiti une países, culturas y personas y es un lenguaje universal que nos conecta más allá de las fronteras.

Lo que menos me gusta es que en Perú hay mucho ego, mucho prejuicio y muchas mentes cerradas, en vez de apoyar a veces te cierran puertas o te menosprecian y más aún por ser mujer te quitan méritos. Por eso siempre trato de ir mas allá , de innovar y de evolucionar y potenciar el graffiti femenino.

What I like most about graffiti is the freedom to paint and be yourself through your style and your vision. I also like that it opens doors for you, since you can meet people from all over the world, travel, and share your art in all sorts of unimaginable places. Graffiti brings countries, cultures, and people together, and it’s a universal language that connects us across borders.

What I like least is that in Peru there’s a lot of ego, a lot of prejudice, and a lot of closed minds. Instead of supporting you, people sometimes shut doors in your face or look down on you—and even more so, as a woman, they take away your credit. That’s why I always try to go further, to innovate and evolve, and to promote women in graffiti.

Feliz de ser parte y de que mi trabajo esté ahí, siento que es una forma real de mostrar mi trabajo y también quién soy detrás de cada pieza.

I’m happy to be a part of this and to have my work featured here; I feel like it’s a genuine way to showcase my work and also reveal who I am behind each piece.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Siempre quería hacer letras pero nunca me atrevía a usar los sprays  por miedo a equivocarme y no sentirme capaz, pero un día dije hoy tengo que vencer ese miedo y pintar esas letras, fue en marzo del 2021 que con muchos nervios y dudas hice mi primera pieza de graffiti en un muro de San Martin de Porres, el barrio donde crecí. Al principio, mi estilo era muy básico , plano y sucio , pero poco a poco comencé por mejorar y evolucionar hasta que comencé a irme por el 3D. Hoy siento que tengo mas confianza y seguridad en mi can control y cada vez que pinto fluyo y disfruto más.      

I always wanted to do lettering but never dared to use spray paint because I was afraid of messing up and didn’t feel capable, but one day I told myself, “Today I have to overcome that fear and paint those letters.” It was in March 2021 that, with a lot of nerves and doubts, I created my first graffiti piece on a wall in San Martín de Porres, the neighborhood where I grew up. At first, my style was very basic, flat, and rough, but little by little I started to improve and evolve until I began moving toward 3D. Today I feel more confident and secure in my control, and every time I paint, I flow and enjoy it more.      

Y para terminar ¿algo que quieras decir?

And finally, anything you want to say?

Que nunca dejen de pintar o hacer lo que más les gusta por miedo al qué dirán o por no creerse capaces. Todo es un proceso, háganlo incluso con miedo.

Hagan las cosas con amor y respeto, nunca solo por fama.  

Never stop painting or doing what you love most just because you’re afraid of what others might say or because you don’t believe in yourself. It’s all a process—go for it, even if you’re scared.
