¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

Mi nombre me lo dio mi compañero de crew, Gats-B. Había tenido varios nombres antes, pero ya estaban ocupados o simplemente no me convencían. Él sugirió esta palabra, y me gustó cómo se veían juntas las letras, así que me quedé con ella y empecé a construir mi estilo en torno a las formas de la palabra.

I got my name from my crew mate Gats-B. I had a few names before, but either they were taken or just didn’t feel right. He suggested this word, and I liked how the letters looked together, so I stuck with it and started building my style around the shapes in the word.

 

 

 

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Mis motivaciones vienen de la cultura hip hop. Me involucré en el hip hop a principios de los 90, con pequeños toques de graffiti, intenté ser DJ, pero fue el breakdance lo que realmente me atrapó. Mi crew, BAD TASTE CRU, se mudó al Reino Unido a principios de los 2000 para mejorar en el breakdance y nos fue muy bien durante nuestra etapa en la escena.
Para mí, el breakdance y el graffiti van de la mano, aunque sé que el graffiti tiene su propio mundo y que la idea de los Cuatro Elementos no era exactamente lo que se hacía en su época, pero así es como lo experimenté.
Formar parte de la escena b-boy me dio la oportunidad de tocar en jams por todo el Reino Unido, Europa y Estados Unidos, donde se veían grafiftis y otros elementos junto con el baile. Pude conocer y observar a artistas increíbles, y eso me ha inspirado mucho. Nunca me consideraría escritor. He hecho cosas pequeñas, pero nada para merecer o usar ese título. Un gran respeto para todos aquellos que se arriesgan por hacer lo que hacen.
Me inspiro en los dibujos animados de los 80, las zapatillas deportivas, los videojuegos, las películas de serie B, las películas de ninjas y kung fu, la cultura b-boy y hip hop, y mis crews.
Me motiva intentar pintar piezas con equilibrio, fluidez y estructura, usando colores vibrantes, y también para desarrollar mis técnicas de pintura y aprender otras nuevas. ¡Solo quiero ser capaz de pintar como los mejores, jaja!

My motivations come from Hip Hop culture, I got involved in Hip Hop in the early 90s, little bits of graff, tried to DJ but it was breakin that really took hold of me. My crew BAD TASTE CRU relocated to the UK Early 2000s to better ourselves in breakin and we did really well during our time in the breakin scene. 
For me, breakin’ and graff go hand in hand, though I know graffiti has its own world and the whole Four Elements idea wasn’t exactly how things were back in the day, but that’s how I experienced it.
Being part of the b-boy scene gave me the chance to hit jams all over the UK, Europe, and the USA, where you’d see graffiti and other elements alongside the dancing. I got to meet and watch some amazing artists, and that has inspired me a lot.
I would never claim to be a writer, I have done bits and bobs of things, but nothing to earn or use that title, huge respect to all those who put themselves on the line to do what they do. 
I get inspired by 80s cartoons, sneakers, arcade games, B-Movies/ninja/kung fu movies, b-boy/hip hop culture and my crews.
I am motivated to try to paint pieces with balance, flow, structure, using vibrant colours and also to developed my painting techniques and learning new ones. I just want to be able to paint burners haha! 

 

 

 

 

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Disfruto mucho de todo el proceso de pintar: desde esbozar ideas y crear conceptos hasta elegir colores y planificar la pared.
Me encanta trabajar en producciones con otras personas con ideas afines; hace que la experiencia sea mucho más divertida e inspiradora.
Pintar me ayuda a relajarme, reflexionar y a dar rienda suelta a mi creatividad.
Es algo en lo que siempre he querido ser bueno, y me he tomado mi tiempo para aprender y seguir mejorando.
También disfruto del lado social: pasar el rato en la pared, charlar, relajarme e ir a sesiones de improvisación. Todo forma parte de lo que hace que pintar sea tan agradable para mí.
Puedo ser crítico con mi propio trabajo y, a veces, un poco duro conmigo mismo. Lo que más me cuesta es cuando pierdo la motivación o me bloqueo, especialmente cuando no estoy seguro de cómo construir o estructurar las letras.

I really enjoy the whole process of painting — from sketching out ideas and coming up with concepts to picking colours and planning the wall.
I love working on productions with other like-minded people; it makes the experience way more fun and inspiring.
Painting helps me relax, think things through, and tap into my creativity.
It’s something I’ve always wanted to get good at, and I’ve taken my time to learn and keep improving.
I also enjoy the social side — hanging out at the wall, chatting, chilling, and going to jams. It’s all part of what makes painting so enjoyable for me.
I can be critical of my own work and sometimes a bit hard on myself. The thing I struggle with most is when I lose motivation or hit a block, especially when I’m unsure how to build or structure letters.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Sí, recuerdo mi primera pieza a mediados de los 90. Me colé en un cobertizo viejo y enorme que solía albergar vacas durante los mercados de fin de semana; entre semana estaba vacío. Tenía grandes muros de hormigón y estaba al lado de un campo de fútbol gaélico, así que había que trepar por encima de los muros del campo para entrar. Estaba justo al lado de un campamento del ejército británico, que era un poco sospechoso, ¡pero como era joven y tonto, no me importó!
Tenía un bote de Holts rojo, un marrón y un bote azul: una combinación de colores bastante desagradable. Entré lleno de emoción y acabé pintando lo que probablemente fue la peor pieza de mi vida. Esos colores eran horribles, el lugar apestaba, y la pieza… Escribí «Skope» con una diana para la ‘O’: ¡una basura! Ja.
Por aquel entonces estaba más centrado en mejorar en el baile de break y tenía la visión de que BTC fuera la mejor crew irlandesa y nos hiciéramos un nombre en la escena de las batallas del Reino Unido y del mundo. No fue hasta hace unos 10 años que empecé a familiarizarme con el graffiti, estudiando el estilo, la estructura de las letras y la fluidez.
Siempre había experimentado con él, aquí y allá, pero nunca me había consolidado del todo ni había tenido el tiempo ni el espacio para desarrollarlo hasta entonces.
Tuve que dejar el break por lesiones, así que por eso sentí que era el momento perfecto para centrarme en aprender a pintar bien.
Me llevó un tiempo cogerle el truco; no me da vergüenza pedir consejo o ayuda cuando la necesito. A cada uno, le enseño.
Siempre intento mejorar cada vez que pinto, y cuando estoy con otros artistas, me esfuerzo al máximo para mejorar.

Yeah, I remember my first piece back in the mid ’90s. I snuck into this big old shed that used to hold cows during the weekend markets — during the week it was empty. It had big concrete walls, and was next to a gaelic football pitch, so you had to climb in over the football pitch walls to get in. It was right next to a British Army camp, which was kind of sketchy, but being young and dumb I didn’t care!
I had one can of Holts red, one brown, and one blue — pretty gross colour scheme. I went in full of excitement and ended up painting what was probably the worst piece ever. Those colours were awful, the place stank, and the piece… I wrote «Skope» with a target for the ‘O’ — rubbish. Hah.
Back then I was more focused on getting better at breakin’ and had a vision for BTC to be the best Irish crew and to make a name for ourselves in UK and World Battle scene.
It wasn’t until about 10 years ago that I really started getting my head around graff, studying style, letter structure, and flow.
I’d always messed around with it, here and there, but I never properly locked in and had the time and space to develop until then.
I had to quit breakin’ because of injuries, so due to that it felt like the perfect time to start focusing on learning how to paint properly.
It took me a while to get the hang of it, I’m not shy about asking for advice or help when I need it. Each One, Teach One.
I’m always trying to get better every time I paint, and when I’m with other artists, I do my best to step up my game.
