¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Encontrar un nombre adecuado me llevó bastante tiempo. Entre 1989 y 1994 utilicé nombres como Diwone, Sjah, Dose, Dol y Levi. A mediados de los 90 quise empezar a hacer graffitis y combiné algunas de las mejores letras (en mi opinión), así que al final me convertí en Mek.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Alrededor de 1985 me cautivó toda la cultura hip hop. Por supuesto, algunas de las influencias más conocidas desempeñaron un papel importante, como el documental «Style Wars» (emitido en la televisión holandesa el 20 de septiembre de 1985) y los libros «Subway Art» y «Spraycan Art». También me impactó mucho el primer graffiti local que vi. Vivía en un pequeño pueblo holandés y no viajaba mucho, así que ver aparecer grandes pinturas coloridas en mi ciudad natal (a finales de los 80) supuso un gran cambio para mí. Alrededor de 1990 empecé a viajar más y me dediqué de lleno a fotografiar la escena del graffiti holandés. Empecé a intercambiar estas fotos con personas afines de países de todo el mundo. ¡Todo esto antes de que existiera Internet, claro está! Hice algunos graffitis, pero eran muy sencillos. No hacía piezas porque pensaba que no tenía suficiente talento. Pero al final no pude resistir la tentación y empecé a hacer piezas a principios de los 90.
Around 1985 I became captivated with the whole Hip Hop culture. Of course some of the most well known influences played a big part like the documentary ‘Style Wars’ (broadcasted on Dutch tv on September 20th 1985) and the books ‘Subway Art’ and ‘Spraycan Art’. Also the first local graffiti I saw made a big impact on me. I lived in a small Dutch town and didn’t travel a lot so seeing some big colourful paintings pop up in my hometown (late 80’s) was a game changer for me. Around 1990 I started traveling more and became very dedicated to photographing the Dutch graffiti scene. I started swapping these photos with likeminded people from countries all over the world. This was all before the internet mind you! I tagged a bit but this was all very low level. I didn’t piece because I thought I was not talented enough. But eventually I could not resist the calling and started doing pieces early 90s.

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?
Me gusta porque es básicamente una cultura positiva, incluso más ahora que en los años 80 y 90. Disfruto reuniéndome con amigos en días soleados, divirtiéndome charlando y compartiendo. El aspecto social es muy importante para mí. No me gustan las mentes estrechas con egos inflados que buscan fama y atención, realmente me hace reír. Maduren de una vez.
I like it because it’s basically a positive culture, even more now than back in the 80s/90s. I enjoy meeting friends on sunny days, have fun talking and piecing together. The social aspect of it means a lot to me. I dislike small minds with big ego’s beefing for fame and attention, it makes me laugh really. Grow the fuck up.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Claro que sí. Creo que fue en 1989 cuando vi unos botes de spray en el taller de mi padre… algunos negros y otros plateados. Así que por la noche me escapé de la cama e hice una horrible obra con la palabra «Ace» en el callejón detrás de nuestra casa. Estaba muy oscuro, así que no veía una mierda, jaja. Resultó que un vecino me vio y se lo contó a mis padres. Pero no les importó demasiado. Después de esto, tardé unos años en volver a intentar hacer graffitis. Mi estilo actual se basa (en mi opinión) en el graffiti clásico de Nueva York, con algunos elementos nuevos y originales, si es posible. Para ser sincero, me gustan los estilos conservadores. Todos los chicos de mi crew basan su trabajo en los fundamentos clásicos del graffiti de Nueva York de los años 70 y 80.
Hell yes. It was 1989 I think and I noticed a few spray cans in my father’s workshed….some blacks and silvers. So at night I sneeked out of my bed and did a very ugly ‘Ace’ piece in the ally behind our house. It was very dark so I couldn’t see shit haha. Turned out a neighbour actually saw me and told my parents. They didn’t mind too much though. After this it took a few years for me to try with piecing again. My style today is (in my opinion) based on the classic NYC graffiti with if possible some new funky elements. I like the conservative styles to be honest. All the guys in my crew are basing their work on the classic groundwork of 70s and 80s NYC stuff.
