Cuando empecé en el año 2004, tenia alrededor de 14-15 años, no había libros, ni revistas, ni vídeos, ni nada de pintura especial en aerosol para graffiti. El graffiti no era popular en Internet y, de hecho, Internet no era todavía tan potente, ya que, se usaban módems de 56k. Lo primero que pinté era un personaje extraño y escribí la palabra Marte junto a él, estaba al lado de ser un total toyaco, absolutamente repugnante. A partir de entonces mi nombre fue Marte. Años más tarde a través de Internet pude ver la escena del graffiti a nivel «internacional» y me di cuenta de que había otros tíos de otras partes del planeta con el nombre de Mars. A veces me gustaría poder volver atrás y cambiarlo a algo más original, pero no es algo que me preocupe demasiado, sólo trato de ser el mejor y el más activo. También creé otro nombre – Mr.Moris para probar cosas nuevas con el.
When I started in 2004, I was around 14-15 years old, there were no graffiti books, magazines, videos, special spray paint or any of that here. Graffiti was not popular on the internet and in fact the internet was not even so popular here yet, using 56k modems. The first thing I sprayed was an alien character and wrote the word mars next to it, it was beyond toy, absolutely disgusting. From then on my name was Mars. Years later the graffiti scene became «International» through the internet and I saw there was other mars names all over the world. Sometimes I wish I could go back and change it to something more original, but I don’t worry about it too much, I just try to be the best and most active. I also created another name – Mr.Moris to try new things with.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un escritor de graffiti?
What motivated you to get started being a graffiti writer?
Mis amigos y yo solíamos montar en monopatín, vimos una película de Hollywood llamada «187» y había graffiti en ella, nos gustó la idea y más tarde nos encontramos con otros críos haciendo lo mismo. Así que, básicamente, en resumen, fue una fase que estábamos pasando como todo aquel que rondara esa edad, supongo que fue poco a poco.
My friends and I used to skateboard, we saw a Hollywood movie «187» and there was graffiti in it, we liked the idea of it and then we met other kids doing it too. So basically in short it was a phase we were going through like everything around that age, I guess I just never outgrew it.
¿Qué tratas de decir con tus graffitis?
What do you try to say with your graffiti?
Además de lo obvio Mars. Hay tanto de que el graffiti sea como un arte que es muy difícil hacer demasiado, por lo que quiero mostrar la progresión y la diversidad en mi trabajo. Para ser grande en todas las areas del graffiti, tags, throw ups, estilos, personajes, murales y también trabajos de galerías. Haciendo todos esos aspectos diferentes que son para mi bastante interesante mantenerlos.
Besides the obvious, Mars. Theres so much to graffiti as an art and it’s really difficult to do too, so I want to show progression and diversity in my work. To be great at all the platforms of graffiti, tags, throw ups, dubs, burners, styles, characters, commissions and gallery work too. Doing all the different aspects also keep it interesting for me.

What is your style?
Marte son letras tradicionales de un estilo de graffiti semi wild style, con efectos y diseños, me gusta pensar en él jugando «seguro» y Mr.Moris es un poco más peligroso, diverso, experimental y con un montón de errores, tanto que emerge de una base tradicional de letras pintadas.
Mars is traditional semi wild style graffiti letters, effects and designs, I like to think of it as playing «Safe» and Mr.Moris is a little more dangerous, diverse, experimental and plenty of mistakes, both emerging from a traditional graffiti lettering foundation.

Es muy bueno, no hay nada como ésta web! Es muy interesante ver cómo diferentes artistas de todo el mundo viven y perciben el arte. Los artistas en la pagina web son todos de excelente forma y superiores, estoy feliz de ser parte de ella.
It’s great, theres nothing like it! It’s very interesting to see how different artists around the world live and perceive art. The artists on the site are all excellent and top form, I am happy to be a part of it.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza? ¿Podrías contarnos la experiencia?
Do you remember the first piece? Could you mind telling us the experience?
Realmente no recuerdo la primera, pero recuerdo que en los primeros años tuve un tiempo horrible, recuerdo la frustración, los sprays locales eran difíciles de usar, tuve que usar diferentes boquillas y no estaba cómodo con cualquiera de ellas! Cada línea que hice me goteaba, eran sesgadas o simplemente no eran consistentes, tuve problemas con el control hasta el punto de darme rabia. Además, el resultado final no estaba unido a mi trazo mi, siempre era demasiado grande y a menudo me quedaba sin pintura antes de terminarla y me daba mucha rabia la jodida mierda que me salía. Era un super toy! Es una mierda, no sé cómo no acabe rindiendome y dándolo por perdido en aquel entonces!
I don’t really remember the first one, but I remember in the beginning years I had a horrible time, I remember being frustrated, the local cans were difficult to use, I had to use different nozzles and wasnt comfortable with any of them! Every line I made dripped, was skew or just not consistent, I struggled with can control and it used to piss me off to the point of rage. Also the final product never matched my sketch, it was always too big and I often ran out of paint before finishing it and that used to irritate the shit out of me. I was super toy! It sucked, I don’t know how I just didn’t give up back then!
¿Puedes hablarnos del graffiti en tu ciudad?
Can you talk us about the graffiti in your city?
En Johannesburgo y Sudáfrica, en general, la escena es todavía bastante nueva y pequeña. En Johannesburgo existe una pequeña cantidad de escritores activos que duran pintando y una cantidad aún menor de los que se pueden comparar con los escritores top internacionales. No es particularmente difícil de conseguir muros legales en algunas áreas y en general están abiertas al público por ser Legales en su mayor parte en esas áreas. La Policía te deja pintar solo también.
In Johannesburg and South Africa in general, the scene is still quite new and small. In Johannesburg there is a small amount of long term active writers and an even smaller amount out of those that can be compared to the top international guys. Its not particularly difficult to get legal walls in some areas and generally public are open to legals for the most part in those areas. Police mostly leave you alone too.

How many cans have you bought in your life?
Fácilmente unos 20.000. Pero estos días mi trabajo costea los sprays.
Easily over 20 000. But these days my work pays for the cans.
