“I’ve always felt like I was stuck in between—not a model student, not a villain, and not particularly good at anything. I chose the name JUNK-R from that feeling: ‘JUNK’ for something considered useless, and ‘R’ from my real name, Ryota.”

What motivated you to get started painting?
Llevo dibujando desde que era niño, siempre ha sido una de mis aficiones. Me atraía el estilo de los cómics y las animaciones extranjeras, y en el manga japonés, obras como «ONE PIECE» tuvieron una gran influencia en mí. Desde la escuela primaria, solía copiar y reorganizar esos dibujos solo por diversión.
«Al principio, me dedicaba a seleccionar música reggae. Diseñaba mis propios folletos y la gente que me rodeaba me animaba a probar la pintura en directo. Antes de darme cuenta, eso me llevó a convertirme en pintor».
I’ve been drawing since childhood—it was always a hobby of mine. I was drawn to the style of overseas animation and comics, and in Japanese manga, works like “ONE PIECE” had a big influence on me. From elementary school, I used to copy and rearrange those drawings just for fun.”
“Originally, I was active as a reggae selector. I designed my own flyers, and people around me encouraged me to try live painting. Before I knew it, that led me to becoming a painter.”

What do you like most about street art and what do you like least?
«Crear murales es muy gratificante. Lo que más me gusta es que están abiertos a todo el mundo, sin importar el género, la raza o el origen, simplemente por estar ahí, en un espacio público».
«Por otro lado, los murales son frágiles. Las paredes desaparecen, las ciudades cambian y, a diferencia de los lienzos, un mural no se puede empaquetar y llevarse consigo. Cuando una pared desaparece, es difícil no sentir una sensación de pérdida».
«El tiempo también cambia al artista. A medida que mi estilo y mis habilidades crecen, siento la necesidad de actualizar y hacer avanzar mi trabajo».
“Creating murals is deeply fulfilling. What I love most is how they’re open to everyone—beyond genre, race, or background—just by being there in public space.”
“On the other hand, murals are fragile. Walls disappear, cities change, and unlike canvas, a mural can’t be packed up and taken with you. When a wall is gone, it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss.”
“Time also changes the artist. As my style and skills grow, I feel the urge to update and push my work forward.”

«Lo recuerdo muy claramente. Mi estilo era completamente diferente al actual, pero la primera vez que pinté en directo ante un público bajo el nombre de JUNK-R fue en un evento local en mi ciudad natal, Yokohama».
«En aquel momento, no pensaba en absoluto en ganarme la vida con el arte. Era simplemente una prolongación de la diversión: dibujaba lo que me gustaba, tanto como me gustaba».
«En comparación con ahora, la sensación de disfrute no ha cambiado, pero los detalles sí. La tensión, la responsabilidad y el peso emocional son muy diferentes a los de aquellos primeros días, y eso se ha convertido en un nuevo tipo de disfrute para mí».
“I remember it very clearly. My style was completely different from what it is now, but the first time I ever did live painting in front of an audience under the name JUNK-R was at a local club event in my hometown, Yokohama.”
“At the time, I wasn’t thinking at all about making a living from art. It was simply an extension of having fun—I was drawing whatever I liked, as much as I liked.”
“Compared to now, the sense of enjoyment hasn’t changed, but the details have. The tension, the responsibility, and the emotional weight are very different from those early days, and that has become a new kind of enjoyment for me.”

«Actualmente vivo en mi ciudad natal, Yokohama, una de las ciudades más activas de Japón en lo que respecta a la cultura artística y musical. Además de seguir desarrollando mi propio trabajo, también formo parte de Garden Grove, un equipo que gestiona y apoya a una amplia gama de artistas».
«De cara al futuro, estoy deseando seguir descubriendo nuevos países, géneros y personas».
«Juntos, Garden Grove y T-PLASTER, un grupo especializado en diseño espacial, incluyendo interiores, exteriores y trabajos arquitectónicos, han lanzado un proyecto colaborativo llamado GT Lab. “I’m currently based in my hometown of Yokohama, one of the most active cities in Japan for art and music culture. While continuing to develop my own work, I’m also a member of Garden Grove, a team that manages and supports a wide range of artists.”
“Looking ahead, I’m excited to keep encountering new countries, genres, and people.”
“Together, Garden Grove and T-PLASTER—a group specializing in spatial design, including interiors, exteriors, and architectural work—have launched a collaborative project called GT Lab.. It’s a research-based creative space exploring new possibilities in art and woodworking. Artists and staff ranging from veterans to younger generations create and sell works there, so I hope people will take a look.”
