¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un escritor de graffiti?
What motivated you to get started being a graffiti writer?
Tenía un montón de amigos de todo el vecindario que lo petaba y me metieron en esto a una edad relativamente temprana. También me gustaban mucho los dibujos animados, los cómics y el skateboarding, que son algunas de las subculturas más innovadoras y creativas que sin duda me ayudan a influenciar y a empujarme no sólo a pintar y dibujar, sino a tomar estos elementos para ayudar a empujar mi práctica como escritor del graffiti.
I had a lot of friends from around the neighbourhood who were rocking and they got me into it at a relatively young age. I was also heavily into cartoons, comic books and skateboarding, which are some of the most innovative and creative subcultures which undoubtedly help influence and push me not only to paint and draw, but take these elements to help push my practice as a graffiti artist.

What do you try to say with your graffiti?
Creo que el graffiti es un medio muy expresivo. Es una de las pocas vías artísticas en las que se utiliza el cuerpo, el alma y la mente. Es una experiencia de cuerpo entero y pienso que a través de mi trabajo trato de mostrar tanto de mi personalidad en la superficie.
I think graffiti is a very expressive medium. It’s one of the few artistic avenues in which you use your body, soul and mind. It’s a full body experience and I think through my work I try to showcase as much of my personality on the surface.
¿Cuál es tu estilo?
What is your style?
Considero que mi estilo es extremadamente funky y gordo. Suelo ir a lo grande, con letras gruesas y colores extremadamente vibrantes. Similar a la pregunta anterior, siempre he sentido que el estilo del graffiti es una extensión del escritor y que de muchas maneras puede reflejar la personalidad del escritor.
I consider my style to be extremely funky and fat. I tend to go big, with chunky lettering and extremely vibrant colours. Similar to the question above, I’ve always felt as if graffiti style is an extension of the writer and in many ways can reflect the writer’s personality.

Me encanta. Creo que siempre es una gran oportunidad para compartir el trabajo con nuevos públicos. Especialmente aquellos que son de diferentes partes del mundo. Lo bueno de las revistas digitales y las plataformas de medios sociales es que ahora tenemos un acceso sin precedentes a la información y al arte que nunca hubiéramos tenido hace apenas unas décadas.
I love it. I think it’s always a great opportunity to share work with new audiences. Especially those who are from different parts of the world. The beautiful thing about digital magazines and social media platforms are that we now have so much unprecedented access to information and art that we never would’ve gotten even just a few decades ago.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
La primera vez que pinté una pieza fue bajo un puente en Toronto. Este puente en particular era un «Salón de la Fama» en cierto modo. Lo que significa un quién es quién en la escena del graffiti de Toronto y en este punto yo definitivamente no estaba cerca de estar en las mismas paredes que ellos. A pesar de todo, encontré un pequeño punto en el que tuve la oportunidad de hacer mi primer «pieza». Este término definitivamente lo usaré a la ligera, ya que fue horrible. La metodología era totalmente errónea. Creo que hice el relleno después del boceto y realmente no tenía sentido de cómo poner las cosas en proporción. Sin embargo, todos tenemos las mismas experiencias exactas y son las que dan forma a lo que somos hoy en día. Todavía recuerdo la pintura, la pieza y la mancha como si fuera ayer, aunque no sé exactamente dónde hay documentación fotográfica de la misma. The first time I painted a piece it was under a bridge in Toronto. This particular bridge was a “Hall of Fame” in a way. Meaning a who’s who of the Toronto graffiti scene and at this point I was definitely nowhere near being on the same walls as them. Regardless, I found a tiny little spot sort of off-the-beaten-path where I had a chance to do my first “piece”. This term I’ll definitely use the term lightly as it was awful. The methodology of it was all wrong. I think I did the fill after the outline and really had no sense of how to place things in proportion. However, we all have these same exact experiences and they’re what shape who we are today. I still remember the paint, the piece and the spot as if it was yesterday, though I’m not exactly sure of where there is photo documentation of it. The feeling I get when I paint today isn’t all that much different to be honest. There are even instances where I smell a certain type of paint or walk by a certain spot that brings me right back. It’s one of the most impactful aspects of our culture.

He tenido la suerte de pintar en muchas ciudades de todo el mundo, pero definitivamente hay más que me encantaría explorar. Me encantaría pintar en España, Italia o Grecia, por nombrar algunas ciudades. Creo que tenemos una especie de mentalidad trofeo en esta cultura, donde cada lugar, tren, pared, ciudad o país es una muesca en nuestro cinturón y siempre estamos luchando por el siguiente. Es lo que nos mantiene alerta y nos ayuda a no sentirnos atrapados.
I’ve been fortunate to paint in many cities around the world, but there are definitely more I’d love to explore. I would absolutely love to paint in Spain, Italy or Greece, just to name a few. I believe that we sort of have a trophy mentality in this culture, where every spot, train, wall, city or country is a notch on our belt and we’re always striving for the next one. It’s what keeps us on our toes and helps us not feel trapped.

What is your crew?
Represento a las crews de UNC, IK, ACK y Chiller Vibes. Todos ellos son familias por derecho propio. Crecí con los chicos de UNC y ellos me ayudaron a perfeccionar mis habilidades como artista. A lo largo de los años conocí a los chicos IK que son mi familia en Nueva Zelanda, pero tienen miembros como yo en Canadá y otros que están aplastando en lugares como Bali, entre otros. Y el Chiller Vibes Crew es más bien un colectivo de viejos y nuevos amigos donde intentamos colaborar en cosas en las que dejamos que el trabajo fluya libremente y no nos sentimos restringidos por las costumbres tradicionales del graffiti.
I represent the UNC, IK, ACK and Chiller Vibes crews. All of which are families in their own right. I grew up with the UNC boys and they me helped hone my skills as an artist. Throughout the years I met the IK boys who are my family down under and primarily rock in New Zealand, yet they have members like me in Canada and other who are crushing in places like Bali, among others. And the Chiller Vibes Crew is a more of a collective of old and new friends where we try to collaborate on things where we just let the work flow freely and not feel restricted by traditional graffiti customs.
