¿Por qué tu tag es ESPRIT?
Why is your tag ESPRIT?
Bueno, ESPRIT significa espíritu en francés. Me gustaron las letras y el significado. ESPRIT es mi nombre desde el primer día, desde que empecé con el graffiti en 1989. También escribí otros nombres (KOER, XESH, SIN16) y desde principios del 2000, me gustan las letras de SPOT.
Well, ESPRIT means spirit in french. I liked the letters and the meaning. ESPRIT is my name since day one, since I’ve started graffiti in 1989. I wrote several other names too (KOER, XESH, SIN16) and since early 2000, I rock the SPOT letters.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un escritor de graffiti?
What motivated you to get started being a graffiti writer?
Comencé a involucrarme con el graffiti cuando tenía unos 12 años. En ese momento, estaba pasando el rato con amigos a los que les gustaba el graffiti y el breakdance. Uno de los escritores me enseñó esta cinta que le dio su hermano mayor: Beat Street donde se mostraba el graffiti y la cultura del hip-hop de una manera que no podía dejar pasar. Desde ese momento me enganché de verdad. Me encantaba la forma en que el graffiti significaba cultura, amistad, compartir y divertirse.
Me enseñó mucho y estoy muy agradecido de cómo el graffiti me hizo viajar mucho y conocer otras culturas, ciudades y gente de todo el mundo.
I started to get involved with graffiti when I was about 12 years old. At that time, I was hanging out with friends who were into graffiti and breakdance. One of the writers showed me this tape he got from his older brother : Beat Street where graffiti and hip-hop culture was shown in a way I couldn’t let go. From that time I really got hooked. I loved the way graffiti meant culture, friendship, sharing and having fun.
It taught me a lot and I’m very thankful how graffiti made me travel a lot and get to know other cultures, cities and people from around the world.
¿Qué tratas de decir con tus graffitis?
What do you try to say with your graffiti?
No tengo ningún tipo de mensaje. Sólo me interesa desarrollar mi estilo y compartir. El graffiti es una forma de arte así como una forma de vinculación entre las personas. Me gusta el aspecto social de ello.
I don’t have any kind of message. I’m just into developing my style and sharing. Graffiti is an art form as well as a way of bonding between people. I like the social aspect of it.

What is your style?
Mis letras son sólo parte de una expresión, la expresión de mi propio ser.
My letters are just part of an expression, the expression of my own self.

Creo que promueve la creación de redes entre los escritores y la gente que apoya el arte en general.
I think it promotes networking between writers and people who support art in general.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Me gustaba dibujar, así que hice mi primera pieza durante una fría noche de invierno, allá por 1989, cerca de un paso subterráneo cerca de mi casa en Ginebra, junto con un amigo. Hice un personaje (creo que nunca tuve una foto de él).
Hacía tanto frío que pintábamos con consejos de stock en latas de Altona que teníamos que atar. Fue épico.
Incluso empezó a nevar en un momento dado. No estábamos seguros de si era legal y seguro pintar allí, pero todo el asunto nos emocionó, ¡especialmente cuando tienes 12 años!
I was into drawing and so I got to do my first piece during a cold winter night, back in 1989, near an underpass close to my house in Geneva, along with a friend. I did a character (I think I never had a picture of it).
It was so cold, we were painting with stock tips on Altona cans we had to rack. It was epic.
It even started to snow at one point. We were not sure if it was legal and safe to paint there but the whole thing got us excited about it; especially when you’re 12!
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti que te mantiene haciendolo?
What do you like the most about graffiti that keeps you doing it?
Haciendo contactos, conociendo gente nueva, viajando, compartiendo la misma pasión.
Networking, meeting new people, travelling, sharing the same passion.

TZP (Twilight Zone Posse), TA (Team Autobot), SIXTEEN CREW, HYH (Hold Yo’ Heads), IDC (I Don’t Care), MST.
