¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

ACE contiene letras de mi nombre real. Según nuestra forma de entender el hip-hop, se trataba de destacar por tus habilidades y competir con los demás. ¿Qué nombre podría ser mejor que «ACE» (justo después de «KING») desde ese punto de vista? Ser bueno no era suficiente. De alguna manera, el ambiente competitivo te empujaba a convertirte en un ace.

ACE includes letters from my real name. From how we understood Hip-Hop, it was about profiling yourself through skills and competing with others. What name would be better than “ACE” (next to “KING”) from that point of view? Being good was not enough. Somehow, the competitive scene pushed you to become an ace.

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Que me lo preguntes tu, que vives en España, resulta curioso por la siguiente razón: éramos tres chicos del mismo barrio que pasábamos el rato juntos día tras día. Un día, «Khan» y «Khem» vinieron a mi casa. Traían una revista española que incluía un reportaje sobre el graffiti. Esa fue la primera vez que nos topamos con el graffiti, aunque por aquel entonces ya había un puñado de obras geniales por ahí. Debía de ser por ahí de 1986 o 1987. La miramos y nos quedamos fascinados. Muy motivados, nos pasamos todo el día haciendo bocetos, ¡y desde ese día nos convertimos en writers!.

Después de eso, mi motivación era que mi nombre se viera más por la ciudad que los anuncios de Coca-Cola, que eran muy populares y estaban por todas partes en aquella época. Literalmente, buscaba la fama. ¡«ACE» tenía que verse en todas partes! Esa era mi motivación.

Being asked by you guy, who are based in Spain, is funny for the following reason: we were three guys from the same hood hanging around day in, day out. One day, “Khan” and “Khem” came over to my house. They had a magazine from Spain with a graffiti documentation in it. This was the first time we were confronted with Graffiti even when there were a handful of great pieces around already. The year must have been around 1986 or 1987. We looked at it and were fascinated. Extremely motivated, we spent the whole day sketching, and from that day on we were writers!

After that, my motivation was for my name to be seen more around the city than Coca-Cola advertisements, which were very popular and all-city in those days. I was literally out for fame. “ACE” had to be seen everywhere! That was my motivation.

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Me encanta leer mi nombre, ver mi bonito estilo y el proceso de crear algo. Por otro lado, siento un profundo desprecio por las personas que critican a los demás de forma anónima.

Reading my name, seeing my beautiful style, and the process of creating something is what I adore. On the other hand, I deeply disrespect people who cross others anonymously.

Para ser sincero, no conocía «elrincondelasboquillas.com» hasta que me invitaron a esta entrevista. Pero eso es precisamente lo bonito de este ambiente, ¿no? Hablas con gente, conoces a personas que comparten tus mismos intereses y hablas de un tema que te apasiona. Esto te permite comprender mejor diferentes puntos de vista o encontrar puntos en común con tu propia filosofía, y enriquece toda la cultura. Las personas activas que crean algo siempre son importantes y merecen ser apreciadas.

To be honest, I did not know about “elrincondelasboquillas.com” until I was invited for this interview. But this is a beautiful aspect of the scene, isn’t it? You talk to people, you meet people who share the same interests, and you discuss a subject you love. This allows you to better understand different perspectives or find agreement with your own philosophy, and it enriches the whole culture. Active people who create something are always important and worth appreciating.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

¡Recuerdo dos o tres «primeras piezas» diferentes! Pero déjame contarte esta historia: había una banda en Basilea llamada «Tiger Baba». Yo era el único «junior» de la banda. Una tarde, estábamos pasando el rato en la ciudad, en nuestro punto de encuentro. Uno de los miembros más mayores de la banda llevaba un bote de spray en el bolsillo y sabía que yo había estado haciendo grafitis por ahí. Me dio el bote y me pidió que escribiera el nombre de la banda, en letras enormes, en el refugio de la banda.

Esa fue la primera vez que hice contornos con un bote de spray. Fue un momento increíble, lleno de adrenalina y orgullo.

Acabo de publicar un libro de 360 páginas con mis bocetos de 1991. Al repasar mis primeros bocetos y compararlos con los actuales, tengo que admitir que no hay una gran diferencia entre el estilo antiguo y el nuevo. Mi estilo se inspira en las tendencias neoyorquinas de finales de los 70 y principios de los 80. Mis letras principales se basan en alfabetos tipográficos básicos, como «Helvetica».

En mi opinión, no se pueden inventar letras nuevas dentro de mis propias reglas de escritura de estilo a menos que las formas se salgan demasiado de lo convencional y se vuelvan demasiado abstractas. Eso puede llevar el resultado a otra dimensión, pero se aleja de lo que yo considero «letras de estilo». Desde el principio, mi objetivo ha sido crear letras bonitas, inspiradas en la arquitectura (por la estructura y la estabilidad de mis letras) y en otros productos de diseño, como los objetos de la Bauhaus o un Lamborghini Countach (por su aspecto impresionante). Quiero que mi estilo y mis letras reflejen estas dos ideas. Ya mencioné mi motivación cuando empecé. Hoy en día, veo el diseño de letras como mi deporte. Es una práctica excelente para mejorar la disciplina, la fuerza, la flexibilidad y el equilibrio, al tiempo que reduce el estrés y la ansiedad. ¡Me encanta! Sigue gustándome mis estilos, y sigue siendo divertido.

But let me share this story: there was a gang in Basel called “Tiger Baba.” I was the only “junior” in the gang. One afternoon, we were hanging around in the city at our meeting point. One of the older gang members had a spray can in his pocket, and he knew that I had been tagging around. He gave me the can and asked me to write the gang name, huge letters, in the shelter of the gang.

This was the first time I did outlines with a spray can. It was such a great moment, filled with a lot of adrenaline and pride.

I just released a book with 360 pages featuring my sketches from 1991. Looking back at my first sketches and comparing them with my current ones, I have to admit that there is not a huge difference between the old and new styles. My style is based on New York styles from the late ’70s and early ’80s. My core letters are based on basic font alphabets, like “Helvetica.”

In my opinion, you cannot really invent new letters within my own rules of style writing unless your forms go too far out of the box and become too abstract. That may take your outcome to another dimension, but it moves away from what I consider “style letters.” From the beginning, my goal has been to create beautiful letters, inspired by architecture (for the structure and stability of my letters) and by other designed products, such as Bauhaus objects or a Lamborghini Countach (for its impressive look). I want my style and letters to reflect these two ideas. I already mentioned my motivation when I started. Nowadays, I see styling as my sport. It is an excellent practice for improving discipline, strength, flexibility, and balance, while also reducing stress and anxiety. I love it! I still like my styles, and it is still fun.
