¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Como la mayoría, de niño empecé a coger materiales artísticos de forma natural y garabateaba en papel, en libros para colorear y en los muebles. A lo largo de mi vida seguí creando arte en todo tipo de superficies, ¡y eso es lo que me ha traído hasta aquí! Crecí en un entorno creativo y acogedor, en el que cada miembro de mi familia tenía sus propios medios artísticos y oficios. Soy fruto de una familia de artistas y empresarios. Mi contacto con ambos estilos de vida marcó mi camino como artista a tiempo completo, algo que me resultó natural.

El estilo artístico que me definió era diferente del trabajo cultural que hacía mi familia. El arte urbano entró en mi vida cuando era un adolescente joven y lleno de energía, y se apoderó por completo de ella. Me volví adicto a él. Para mí, el arte urbano es libertad. El arte urbano estuvo ahí para mí cuando la vida se me complicaba. A día de hoy, pintar en las cunetas con los colegas sigue siendo una de mis facetas más auténticas. Le debo todo a la cultura del arte urbano.

El arte urbano bendijo mi vida al enseñarme a pintar obras a gran escala en un muro enorme por diversión. Cuando llegó el momento de plantearme una carrera profesional, opté por lo que mejor sabía hacer y cambié de temática, pasando a los murales y al arte urbano.

Así que empecé a pintar murales y a participar en festivales de arte urbano, donde encontré una comunidad de artistas que tenía vínculos con mi grupo de amigos y sentí que estaba en el lugar adecuado.

Hoy en día mantengo mi actividad como artista de arte urbano en un segundo plano y respeto las reglas no escritas de este mundo. La pintura mural es mi profesión, en la que trabajo con clientes, y el arte urbano es mi vía de escape, donde puedo disfrutar de libertad creativa y vivir aventuras con mis amigos.

Like most, I naturally picked up art materials as a kid and scribbled on paper, in coloring books, and on furniture. I continued to make art on all kinds of surfaces throughout my life which landed me here! I grew up in a supportive creative environment where my family each had their own artistic mediums and trades. I’m a product of a family of artists and business owners.  My exposure to both lifestyles carved my path as a fulltime artist that came naturally for me. 

The art style that found me was different from the cultural work my family made. Graffiti was introduced into my life as a young energetic teenager and it completely hijacked my life. I was addicted to it. Graffiti is freedom to me. Graffiti was there for me when life got heavy. It’s to this day that painting in the ditches with the homies is one of the most authentic sides of me. I owe everything to the Graffiti culture. 

Graffiti blessed my life in the way of teaching me how to paint large scale works on a big wall for fun. When it was time to consider a career I went with what I knew best and switched up the subject matter and it turned into Murals and Street art.

So I started painting murals and participating in street art mural festivals where I found a community of artists that had ties to my graff community and it felt like I was in the right place. 

Today I keep my graffiti low key and abide by the unwritten rules of the sport. Mural painting is my career where I work with clients, and graffiti is my outlet where I can have creative freedom and go on an adventure with my friends. 

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del arte urbano y lo que menos?

What do you like most about street art and what do you like least?

Con la pintura mural y el arte urbano, siento que he encontrado una comunidad y un grupo de personas con las que me identifico y de las que aprendo. He conocido a muchos artistas con un talento increíble a los que admiro y a los que considero amigos. Al igual que en la comunidad del graffiti, algunos de mis amigos de toda la vida, que son como hermanos para mí, surgieron de las primeras obras que pintamos en las cunetas cuando éramos niños.

Encontrar gente con ideas afines y con talento es algo que valoro mucho. Tenemos a gente increíble haciendo trabajos alucinantes.

Las partes que no son tan divertidas, y que son similares en la mayoría de comunidades o nichos, son que a veces puede haber política y un poco de drama que lo hacen un poco picante, jaja. Los egos y la búsqueda de demostrar quién es quién a veces se interponen en el aspecto comunitario. Pero hay reglas y niveles de respeto que debemos mantener y, si es necesario, resolver los asuntos, limar asperezas y volver a la pared a dar unas pinceladas.

With mural painting and street art, I feel like I found a community and a tribe of individuals that I can relate to and learn from. I’ve met a lot of extremely talented artists who I look up to that I call friends. Similar to the graffiti community, some of my lifelong friends who are brothers to me came from some of the first pieces painted in the ditches while we were kids. 

Finding like minded and talented people is what I find a lot of value in. We got some solid humans making insane work. 

The parts that aren’t so fun that are similar in most communities or niches, is that there can be politics and a little drama that make it a little spicy sometimes haha. Egos and the quest to prove oneself sometimes get in the way of the community aspect. But there are rules and levels of respect where we have to uphold and if needed handle business, squash beef, and get back on the wall to catch some sprays.

Siempre me hace mucha ilusión compartir mi trabajo con los demás. Internet nos ha conectado a muchos de nosotros con comunidades de todo el mundo y nos ha brindado formas de compartir nuestras historias con los demás. Estoy encantado de compartir mi visión de Hawái y del entorno en el que crecí. Hawái es un lugar especial y me siento agradecido de poder compartirlo a través de mi objetivo.

I’m always excited to share my work with others. The internet has connected a lot of us to communities around the world and has provided ways for us to tell our stories with others. Stoked to share my version of Hawaii and the environment I grew up in. Hawaii is a special place and I’m grateful to share it through my lens. 

 

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Mi primer mural por el que me pagaron fue en 2010, cuando pinté con spray un montón de criaturas marinas en una pared junto a una piscina. Esa fue la primera vez que recibí dinero por pintar con spray. Eso me hizo darme cuenta de que era posible ganar dinero haciendo arte. A partir de ahí, hice algunos murales y proyectos sueltos, pero me centré principalmente en el arte urbano. Mi estilo evolucionó después de la universidad. Decidí combinar lo que había aprendido del graffiti con el estilo de vida hawaiano y la estética del surf para crear el estilo con el que pinto ahora.

Mi primera obra de graffiti fue en 2009, cuando estaba en primero de la ESO, y fue entonces cuando encontré mi estilo. Mi primo mayor me llevó a una valla en la que solían practicar y allí pinté por primera vez fuera de mis tablas de madera en casa. Me encantaban los personajes y crear mis propias criaturas o monstruos. Sin duda he mejorado en todos los aspectos del arte urbano con el tiempo y ahora me divierte improvisar y dejarme llevar por las obras. Era joven, estaba emocionado y no me importaba demasiado el ego. Solo quería abrirme paso a través de los bosques tropicales de Hawái y encontrar la siguiente pared que pintar, escondida bajo años de maleza, o un lugar abandonado que mis amigos y yo pudiéramos ir a explorar.

My first mural that I got paid for was in 2010 where I spray painted a bunch of sea creatures on a wall next to a pool. This was the first time I received money for spraying something. It gave me the idea that it was possible to make money doing art. I dabbled with a few odd murals and projects from that point but I was mainly focused on graffiti. My style evolved after college. I decided to combine what I learned from graffiti with the Hawaiian Lifestyle and Surfing aesthetic to create the style I paint now. 

My first graffiti piece was in 2009, I was a freshman in High school and that is when I found my steeze. My older cousin took me to this fence that they were practicing on and that’s where I painted for the first time outside of my wood boards at home. I was a big fan of characters and coming up with my own creatures or monsters. I’ve definitely improved in all realms of graffiti over time and now it’s fun to freestyle and cruise through pieces. I was young, excited and didn’t care too much about the ego. I just wanted to cut through the tropical forests of Hawaii and find the next wall to paint hidden under years of overgrowth or an abandoned spot that my friends and I could go explore.

And finally, anything you want to say?

Solo quiero decir que necesitamos más mentes creativas y artistas en este mundo. Hay mucho talento oculto ahí fuera y, para mí, el arte siempre ha hecho del mundo un lugar mejor. Para aquellos de vosotros que queráis encontrar una vía de expresión, ¡probadlo! Elige un medio que te parezca divertido y ve a dónde te lleva. A los que ya os dedicáis a una carrera creativa, os diría que sigáis adelante. No os rindáis demasiado pronto; no siempre vemos los resultados que queremos, pero si insistís un poco más, acabaréis encontrando la receta perfecta para crear obras increíbles.

I just want to say that we need more creative thinkers and artists in this world. There is a lot of hidden talent out there and art has always made the world a better place for me. For those of you who are wanting to find an outlet of expression try it out! Pick up a medium that sounds fun for you and see where it takes you. For those who have been in a creative career, I’d say keep going! Don’t give up too soon, we don’t always see the results we want but pushing a little further you end up finding the right recipe to cook up some rad work!
