¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

En el instituto nos topamos con el nombre de la antigua ciudad de Ebla, un asentamiento de la Edad del Bronce que estudiábamos, y me gustó la combinación de las cuatro letras, así que decidí elegir EBLO como mi apodo. Lo utilicé durante un par de años, hasta que decidí darle a mi nombre un toque más «hiphop», quitando la E y añadiendo la W. Así es como nació BLOW, allá por 1999.

Cuando estaba en la uni, un amigo mío me dijo que eligiera un nombre de sistema dentro de la cultura hiphop, poniendo como ejemplo que no se puede renombrar una carpeta en el ordenador como «Documentos» o «Papelera de reciclaje». ¡Eso me hizo reír!.

At school we bumped in the name of the ancient city of Ebla, a bronze age town that you study, and I liked the combination of the four letters, so I decided I would choose EBLO as my tag. I have been using that for couple of years, until I decided to make my name a bit more “hiphop”, getting rid of the E and adding the W. This is how BLOW was born around 1999.

When I was in Uni, a friend of mine told me I choose a System name within the hiphop culture, making the example of how you can not rename a folder on your PC as Documents, or Recycling Bin. That made me laugh!.

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Vengo de una ciudad pequeña donde la cultura hip-hop, sobre todo el breakdance y el graffiti, estaba muy desarrollada desde principios de los 80, especialmente teniendo en cuenta el tamaño reducido de la ciudad.

En mi ciudad natal encontré tantas fuentes de inspiración que siempre me sentí motivado y, en cuanto se presentó la ocasión, decidí probarlo yo mismo.

Estaba en la ESO (tenía 12 años) y convencí a mis amigos para que se unieran a mí, yendo de un sitio a otro haciendo graffitis y pintando, pero al final quedó claro que yo era el único que tenía esa chispa interior. Aunque es muy divertido recordar aquellos tiempos, en esos años se crearon recuerdos imborrables.

I come from a small city where HipHop culture, particularly breakdance and graffiti were extremely developed since the early 80’s, especially compared to the small size of the city.

I had such great inspirations in my home town that I always felt inspired and I gave it a try myself as soon as the occasion arose.

I was in middle school (12yrs old) and I brought my mates on board, going around tagging and bombing, but eventually it was clear that I was the only one with the real spark within. Going back memory lane is so fun though, everlasting memories were created in those years.

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos? 

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Durante mis primeros años como writer disfruté mucho del sentido de comunidad y de la oportunidad de conocer a muchos nuevos amigos con talento con los que compartir mi «rareza»; había una sensación de pertenencia a una tribu que realmente me ayudó a seguir adelante durante mi adolescencia y mis primeros años de veintitantos. Después de eso, empecé a ver el grafiti como un ejercicio de mindfulness, en el que puedo estar conmigo mismo, explorar mis pensamientos más íntimos y liberar el estrés de la vida adulta.

Lo que no me gusta son las conversaciones triviales, los chistes estereotipados y todos los clichés entre los writers. Prefiero pintar con alguien con quien tenga una gran conexión que con alguien cuyo estilo admire.

During my first years as a graffiti writer I really enjoyed the sense of community, and the chance of meeting many new talented friend to share my “weirdness” with; There was this sense of belonging to a tribe that really kept me going throughout my teen years and my early 20’s. After that I started viewing Graffiti writing as a mindfulness exercise, where I can be with my self, explore my inner thoughts and vent out the stress of adult life.

What I don’t like is the small talk, the stereotyped jokes and all the cliché amongst graffiti writers. I’d rather paint with someone I have a great connection with that with someone whose style I admire.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Por supuesto que sí. Fue a primera hora de la tarde, hace unos 29 años. Solo un color, un azul eléctrico de una de las marcas más baratas de la ciudad, y salí con mis compañeros de colegio a dejar nuestra primera huella en la ciudad.

Lo que me hace gracia es que, unos meses después, un chico mayor acabó pintando encima de mi obra con un graffiti muy colorido, y me enfadé tanto que empecé una pelea imaginaria con él. Treinta años después, su hermano menor está en mi grupo y llevamos más de 10 años pintando juntos.

Como dije antes, cada uno de los sentimientos de aquellos primeros pasos en el mundo del graffiti están perfectamente grabados en mi memoria, porque todo giraba en torno a la belleza de descubrir cosas. No tenía ningún mentor, así que me sentía como si estuviera construyendo todo desde cero otra vez. Cada vez que veía una nueva obra en la ciudad, mi chispa se reavivaba más que antes, y me pasaba todas las tardes dibujando en casa, esperando ser lo suficientemente bueno como para plasmar mis bocetos en la pared.

Sinceramente, no cambiaría mi experiencia adolescente por nada del mundo, porque formar parte de algo tan grande, pero a la vez tan disperso por todo el mundo (en aquel entonces no había Internet en los hogares, y mucho menos teléfonos), realmente me hacía sentir que toda mi existencia había encontrado su propósito.

Absolutely yes. It was in the early afternoon somewhere around 29 years ago. One colour only, an Electric Blue from one of the cheapest brands in town and I went out with my school mates to leave our first mark in town.

What I find funny is that an older guy ended up going over me with a proper colourful piece few months later and I got so upset I started an imaginary beef with him. Thirty years later his youngest brother is with my crew and we’ve been painting together for the last 10+ years!.

As I said before, every single feeling of those early approaches to graffiti writing are perfectly carved in my memory because it was all about the beauty of discovering things. I did not have any mentor, so it felt like building everything from scratch all over again. Whenever I saw a new piece in town, my spark got reignited more than before, and I was spending every single afternoon sketching at home, waiting to be good enough to replicate my sketches on the wall.

Honestly I would not trade my teenage experience with anything else, because being part of something so big, yet so scattered through the world (internet was definitely not around in households, let alone phones) really felt like my whole existence found its purpose.

Esto es una especie de reflexión personal, porque a menudo caigo en el hábito de juzgar a quienes tienen una visión diferente a la mía.

La cultura del graffiti se ha convertido en algo tan grande, con ramas tan diferentes entre sí, que prácticamente todas y cada una de ellas son válidas.

Mi consejo sería que te centraras al 100 % en tu estilo y actitud, y que hicieras absolutamente todo lo posible por convertirte en la mejor versión de ti mismo. ¡Deja una huella EN la sociedad, no DENTRO de la sociedad!.

This is a bit of a self reflection, because I often fall into the habit of becoming judgmental towards someone that has a different vision from mine.

Graffiti culture has developed into something so big, with branches that are so different from each other, that pretty much every single one of those is valid.

My advice would be to focus 100% on your style and attitude and do absolutely everything to become the best version of yourself! Leave a mark ON society, not IN society!.
