As a teenager, I remember seeing the work of many graffiti artists in my neighborhood, and in high school, I was inspired to create my own pieces. What you saw in my city back then was pure originality; I was fascinated by the work of artists like Goal, Crime, Gruñon, Waize, Chiz, Puerk, and others. This was around 2006. Now I’ve been painting graffiti for 20 years, and it inspires me even more to be able to call these masters my friends.

Cuando era adolescente recuerdo ver el trabajo de muchos writers en mi barrio y cursando la secundaria me anime a hacer mis propias obras. Lo que se veía en mi ciudad en ese entonces era pura originalidad, me sentía fascinado con el trabajo de artistas como Goal, Crime, Gruñon, Waize, Chiz, Puerk y mas artistas. Por ahí del 2006. Ahora tengo 20 años pintando graffiti. Y me inspira aun más poder llamar a estos maestros mis amigos.  

  

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Lo que mas me gusta del graffiti es sentirme libre, poder pintar unas letras a mi gusto sin tener que dar explicaciones de qué significan o qué mensaje transmiten. Mis letras no transmiten nada más que libertad y diversión. También la convivencia con otros artistas serios y comprometidos es de mis cosas favoritas.  Y lo que menos me gusta, es la actitud desafiante de los artistas del graffiti actual creyéndose los dueños de todo, violentando, tirando beef, throw ups de poca calidad con la intención de llamar la atención, las redes sociales distorsionan mucho como nuevas generaciones toman el graffiti mas como un contenido polémico esperando tener mas views y likes que como un verdadero movimiento.

What I love most about graffiti is the feeling of freedom, being able to paint letters however I like without having to explain their meaning or message. My letters convey nothing more than freedom and fun. Also, the camaraderie with other serious and committed artists is one of my favorite aspects. What I like least is the defiant attitude of many current graffiti artists, acting like they own the place, resorting to violence, throwing shade, and producing low-quality throw-ups just to get attention. Social media distorts the image, as new generations view graffiti more as controversial content, hoping for more views and likes, than as a genuine movement.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Si, recuerdo mi primera pieza en el 2006, fue ilegal durante la secundaria, de bajo de un puente, bastante tranquilo la verdad, nadie nos molesto mientras pintábamos, usaba el tag de “Smaid” fue una pieza con muchas flechas y hecha con negro y naranja. Bellos tiempos.

Yes, I remember my first piece in 2006. It was illegal during high school, under a bridge, pretty quiet actually, nobody bothered us while we were painting. I used the tag “Smaid.” It was a piece with lots of arrows and done in black and orange. Good times.

Y para terminar ¿algo que quieras decir?

Si bien es cierto que las redes sociales han ayudado muchísimo a difundir el trabajo de muchos grafiteros al rededor del mundo y eso mismo ha permitido conectarnos de manera mas eficiente para aprender, tener otra vision, saber que se hace del otro lado del mundo. También es fácil caer en el contenido sin substancia. No dependamos 100% de redes sociales, yo mismo tengo muchas piezas que nunca he subido a redes que me gustan mucho y prefiero mantener solo para mi. a la vieja escuela, gracias por lo iniciado, a la nueva escuela, no desistan y a los que estamos en medio como yo, a seguir aprendiendo.

While it is true that social media has greatly helped to spread the work of many graffiti artists around the world, allowing us to connect more efficiently to learn, gain new perspectives, and find out what is happening on the other side of the world, it is also easy to fall into content without substance. Let’s not depend 100% on social media. I myself have many pieces that I have never uploaded to social media that I really like and prefer to keep just for myself. To the old school, thank you for what you started. To the new school, don’t give up. And to those of us in the middle, like me, let’s keep learning.
