When I started doing graffiti in 1990, I first experimented with different names. Around 1995, I finally settled on the name MONE. Back then, people were looking for relatively short names—usually three to four letters—that were quick to write. I liked the letters M‑O‑N‑E because of their flow, and at the same time they felt very solid and balanced together.
Cuando empecé con el graffiti en 1990, primero probé distintos nombres. Alrededor de 1995 encontré finalmente el nombre MONE. En aquella época se buscaban nombres relativamente cortos, normalmente de tres o cuatro letras, que fueran rápidos de escribir. Me gustaban las letras M-O-N-E por su flow y, al mismo tiempo, porque se sentían muy estables y equilibradas entre sí.

What motivated you to get started painting?
En realidad siempre he pintado, desde que tengo memoria. Una gran influencia temprana fue una marca de surf de Hawái llamada Town & Country, con camisetas de surf increíblemente cool. El personaje principal era un gorila surfista rodeado de un grupo colorido de amigos extraños, que representaban distintas situaciones del estilo de vida surf y skate.
Pero lo que realmente fue decisivo para el graffiti fue un amigo skater que un día me dijo que sabía hacer graffiti y me mostró algunas letras. Ese momento tan simple fue suficiente para provocar el flash en mí.
I’ve basically always painted—ever since I can remember. A big influence on me early on was a surf brand from Hawaii called Town & Country, with incredibly cool surfer shirts. The main character was a surfing gorilla surrounded by a colorful group of quirky friends, all expressing different situations from the surf and skate lifestyle.
What really sparked my interest in graffiti, though, was a skater friend who once told me he could do graffiti and showed me a few letters. That simple moment was enough to trigger the flash for me.

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?
Lo que más me fascina es la libertad de poder pintar todo lo que quiero, sin restricciones. Tal y como conocí el graffiti entonces y como lo sigo viviendo hoy, para mí es la búsqueda de lo no visto, del estilo propio, para luego ser reconocido exactamente por eso.
Lo que me entusiasma menos son las supuestas reglas sobre cómo debe ser el graffiti, ya que para mí es un flow, una sensación, algo que puede visualizarse de muchas maneras diferentes.
What fascinates me most is the freedom to paint whatever I want, without restrictions. The way I discovered graffiti back then—and the way I still live it today—it’s about searching for the unseen, for your own style, and then being recognized exactly for that.
What excites me less are the so‑called rules about how graffiti is supposed to be. For me, it’s a flow, a feeling, something that can be visualized in many different ways.

La idea me parece muy buena. Es una plataforma que muestra a grandes artistas de todo el mundo y enseña lo diferente que ha sido el camino de cada uno hacia el graffiti. “No encuentras el graffiti, el graffiti te encuentra a ti.” Creo que esa idea se puede leer en muchas trayectorias.
I really like the idea. It’s a platform that showcases great artists from all over the world and shows how differently people have found their way to graffiti.
“You don’t find graffiti—graffiti finds you.” I think you can read that thought in many artists’ stories.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primer piece surgió después de que ya llevara tres años dibujando sobre papel. Tuvimos la oportunidad de pintar en un viejo cobertizo anexo de un amigo. No fue nada espectacular, pero fue un flash total: música, buen ambiente, todo.
Todavía conservo fotos de aquel momento. Siempre me recuerdan a los comienzos y muestran lo difícil que es realmente el graffiti y lo largo que es el camino hasta llegar a una pieza más o menos buena. Pero la magia es innegable.
My very first piece came after I had already been drawing on paper for three years. We had the chance to paint in an old shed extension belonging to a friend. It was nothing spectacular, but it was a total flash—music, good vibes, everything.
I still have photos of it today. They always remind me of the early days and show how hard graffiti actually is, and how long the road is to creating a halfway decent piece. But the magic is undeniable.

Estoy profundamente agradecido al graffiti y a las oportunidades que me ha brindado. Para mí es el hobby más grande y serio que puedo imaginar. A través de los viajes, de pintar muros de gran formato y del intercambio con otros writers y personas entusiastas, se ha creado una gran familia, con miembros muy diferentes entre sí.
I’m incredibly grateful for graffiti and for the opportunities it has given me. For me, it’s the greatest and most serious hobby I can imagine. Through traveling, painting large‑scale walls, and exchanging ideas with other writers and enthusiastic people, a huge family has formed—made up of completely different characters.
