Why is your tag Merc?
En realidad, escribía Craze en ese momento, había pasado por algunos nombres antes de eso, como la mayoría de la gente, mi colega de crew Poet estaba buscando un nuevo nombre para probarlo a principios del año 86 cuando se aburría con sus letras, Un par de sugerencias y uno de ellos fue Merc 2. Lo probó durante un día o así y dijo que no le gustaba, así que pensé que lo cogería en su lugar. Con el tiempo cayó el 2, ya que no había nadie en Londres escribiendo Merc antes de mí, pero de vez en cuando me gusta volver a ponerlo como un acabado de mi pieza.
I was actually writing Craze at the time, I’d been through a few names before that like most people, my crewmate Poet was looking for a new name to try out in early 86 as he was getting bored with his letters, I gave him a couple of suggestions and one of them was Merc 2. He tried it out for about a day or so and said he didn’t like it so I thought I’ll have it instead. Over time I dropped the 2 as there wasn’t anyone in London writing Merc before me, but every now and then I like to drop it back in as a finisher to my piece.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un escritor de graffiti?
What motivated you to get started being a graffiti writer?
Para mí estaba viendo viejas películas de Nueva York de los años 70 como The Warriors, Death Wish, Saturday Night Fever, y como crecí en Escocia, había un montón de pandillas y graffitis políticos por todas partes. Me hicieron intrigarme en cuanto a lo que se trataba aquello, siempre estaba dibujando dibujos animados, logos, etc y constantemente viendo libros de texto de decoración y blocs de dibujo, pero nunca presté atención a clases de arte. O al colegio para ver esa materia.
Luego viendo el Buffalo Gals vid me hizo darme cuenta de que realmente hay un método detrás de lo que estas personas estaban haciendo con pintura en spray, este material estaba pensado para eso.
For me it was watching old NYC films from the 70s like The Warriors, Death Wish, Saturday Night Fever, and growing up in Scotland there was a lot of gang and political graffiti everywhere. They made me intrigued as to what this was about, I was always drawing cartoons, logos etc and constantly decorating schoolbooks and sketchpads, but I never really paid attention in art classes. Or school full stop for that matter.
Then seeing the Buffalo Gals vid made me realise there’s actually method behind what these people are doing with spraypaint, this stuff is more intricate and thought out…I used to mess around with boot polish and pens on stairways, seeing that made me want to expand and paint letters like that guy…

What is your style?
Mi estilo proviene de la vieja escuela de Londres a mediados de los años 80 influenciado por gente como Jap 302 y gente como Pride y Bando con un guiño a NYC. Aprendí mucho de lo que se hacia en Nueva York. Trato de mantener mi estilo a lo largo de esas líneas, siguiendo un modelo bastante tradicional, pero con algunas exageraciones aquí y allá.
My style comes from an old mid 80s London blueprint influenced by people like Jap 302 and people like Pride and Bando with a nod to NYC. I learned a lot from painting in NYC. I try and keep my style along those lines, following quite a traditional blueprint but with some exaggerations thrown in here and there.

Would you mind telling us how is your normal day during the week?
Un horario de 9 a 5 como la mayoría de la gente, trabajo en la industria creativa por lo que tengo un montón de oportunidades para expresarme a través de mi trabajo, así como a través de la pintura.
9 to 5 like most people, I work in the creative industry so I get a lot of opportunities to express myself through my job as well as through painting.

Mi crew principal es ACR – que la fundé con Dome y Redeem 27 en 1985, Es casi una crew muerta ahora debido a que casi todo el mundo está jubilado o no puede pintar, pero todavía lo pongo todo el tiempo … También estoy con CBM, NHS, KMS, KAOS Inc y este año XMen …
My main crew is ACR – which I co-founded with Dome and Redeem 27 in 1985, It’s pretty much a dead crew now in terms of nearly everyone is retired or unable to paint, but I still put it up all the time…I’m also down with CBM, NHS, KMS, KAOS Inc and as of this year XMen…

There’s loads of people I rate past and present but for various different things, people like Swet, Dare, Dondi, Case 2, Jap 302, Sye, Arab, Web, Chain 3, Slave, Lee, JA, Rime, Part, Padre 2, Kool 131, Cliff 159, Billy 167…I could go on.
