¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Al principio pasé por muchos nombres diferentes, pero me quedé con el de MAST porque tenía garra y una mezcla de letras estéticamente agradable que me gustaba. Desde entonces se ha convertido en un acrónimo al que doy sentido y que puedo reinventar continuamente. Técnico de Estilo Animal Mecánico, Tecnología de Estilo Activada Musicalmente, Misiones Murales Malévolas de Medianoche que Realizan Todos los Estilos Agresivos Alfabéticos Pintados con Spray que Muestran Verdaderas Técnicas Talentosas de Tags Tipográficos, etc.
I went through a lot of different names in the beginning but I stuck with the name MAST because it had punch and an aesthetically pleasing mix of letters that I liked. Since then it’s turned into an acronym that I give meaning to and can continually reinvent for myself. Mechanical Animal Style Technician, Musically Activated Style Technology, Midnight Malevolent Mural Missions Accomplishing All Aggressive Alphabetic Spraypainted Styles Showing True Talented Typograffic Tagging Techniques, etc.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Crecí en Yonkers, Nueva York, y desde muy pronto vi muchos graffiti a través de las ventanillas de los coches y los trenes cuando viajaba con mi familia a visitar a parientes en el Bronx, Brooklyn y Nueva Jersey. De niño empecé a buscarlos detrás de los edificios, bajo los puentes y en las vías del tren. Me fascinaba. Cuando descubrí el libro Subway Art and Spraycan Art me quedé boquiabierto. Me enganché. Era un lenguaje expresivo que utilizaba letras, colores, estilos y personajes únicos para hacer una declaración personal y contar una historia. El lenguaje visual del graffiti era como música para mis ojos. Desde entonces me ha cautivado.
Growing up in Yonkers, New York I saw a lot of graffiti early on through the windows of cars and trains as I travelled with my family to visit relatives in the Bronx, Brooklyn and New Jersey. When I was a kid I began searching for it behind buildings, under bridges and on train tracks. I was fascinated by it. When I discovered the book Subway Art and Spraycan Art my mind was blown. I was hooked! This was an expressive language that utilized unique lettering, colors, style and characters to make a personal statement and tell a story. The visual language of graffiti was like music to my eyes. I have been captivated since.

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?
El graffiti me proporciona una válvula de escape para mi creatividad y expresión. Combina el sentido de la aventura con un acto creativo. Mediante el uso de letras, colores y caracteres puedo contar mi historia y crear un registro de las experiencias del día. También me ha proporcionado la amistad de artistas de ideas afines en mis diferentes crews, que me inspiran para impulsarme a mí mismo y a mi creatividad como escritor.
Lo que menos me gusta del graffiti es el drama y las tonterías que conlleva una cultura tan impulsada por el ego. Es de locos ver a toys, toyacos desinformados, pasando por encima de obras clásicas, escritores que han fallecido y murales geniales.
Graffiti provides me an outlet for my creativity and expression. It combines a sense of adventure with a creative act. Through the use of lettering, colors and characters I’m able to tell my story and create a record of the day’s experiences. It’s also provided me with the friendship of like minded artists in my different crews who inspire me to push myself and my creativity as a writer.
What I like least about graffiti is the drama and BS that comes with such an ego driven culture. It is wack to see toys, being uninformed toys, going over classic pieces, writers that have passed away and dope mural artwork.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primera pieza pintada con spray fue en 1991 detrás del supermercado Waldbaums en Central Ave en Yonkers, NY. Rellené las latas de krylon del Pergament local y pinté una pieza con un estilo bastante sencillo allí detrás. Era un lugar en el que muchos chavales del instituto de Roosevelt, que estaba al final de la manzana, solían faltar a clase y pasar el rato allí, fumando, bebiendo y pintando. Era un lugar de encuentro en el que pude conocer a escritores y crews locales más veteranos y consolidados.
Echo la vista atrás y pienso en la persona que era cuando empezaba a iniciarme en el graffiti y pienso en lo lejos que he llegado y en lo asombrada y emocionada que estaría esa versión más joven de mí misma al ver hasta dónde he llegado. Intento aprovechar ese entusiasmo juvenil y esa mentalidad «lúdica» para vigorizar e inspirar mis proyectos creativos actuales.
Hoy en día quiero que mis piezas cuenten una historia. Las letras tienen personalidad y energía de movimiento, como si estuvieran golpeando o bailando. Hay un personaje funky o sexy que complementa la pieza y una frase chula o un remate que lo resume todo y lo hace memorable.
My first spray painted piece was in 1991 behind Waldbaums supermarket on Central Ave in Yonkers, NY. I racked the krylon cans from the local Pergament and painted a stiff simple style piece back there. It was a spot that a lot of kids from Roosevelt HS, which was down the block, used to cut school and hang out at, smoke, drink and write. It served as a meeting place where I was able to meet older, more established local writers and crews.
I look back and think about the person I was, just starting to get my feet wet with graffiti and I think about how far I’ve come and how amazed and excited that younger version of myself would be to see where we’ve taken it. I try to tap into that youthful enthusiasm and “play” mentality to invigorate and inspire my current day creative pursuits.
These days I want my pieces to tell a story. The letters have movement personality and energy like they’re striking or dancing. There’s a funky or sexy character to compliment the piece and a cool phrase or punchline to sum it all up and make it memorable.
