Lobsta

Originally my name came from an earlier friend of mine sketching some random side names one of them being Lobsta. I had just gotten arrested under my original word vize and went to his house shortly after. I seen the word thought it was a cool one and asked if I could take it from there. He said sure. This was around 2006ish. Ive been writing it ever since and through travel has been a sweet homage to where Im from and the north east u.s. accent.

Originalmente, mi nombre proviene de un antiguo amigo mío que dibujaba algunos nombres secundarios al azar, uno de ellos era «Lobsta» Vi la palabra, me pareció genial y le pregunté si podía quedármela. Me dijo que sí. Esto fue alrededor de 2006. Desde entonces la he estado escribiendo y, a través de los viajes, ha sido un bonito homenaje a mi lugar de origen y al acento del noreste de Estados Unidos.

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Soy artista desde que era niño. Mi madre siempre me animó y tengo fotos mías pintando con pinceles desde los 3 años. Creo que al crecer en Providence vi y me fijé en los escritores locales cuando tenía unos 11 años. Pensé «oye, yo puedo hacer eso» y me sentí atraído por ello. Esa obsesión me llevó a empezar a pintar graffitis alrededor de los 13-14 años y a pintar alrededor de los 15-16. Y al tomármelo más en serio, empecé a buscar otros artistas de todo el mundo que me inspiraran. Creo que eso fue lo que realmente me hizo querer tomarme la pintura muy en serio.

I have been an artist since I was a child. My mom always encouraged it and I have photos of me painting with brushes as early as 3 years old. I think through growing up in Providence I saw and noticed local writers getting up when I was 11 years old or so. I thought hey I can do that and was enticed by it. That obsession led to me catching tags around 13-14 and starting to paint around age 15-16. And through me taking it more seriously I started to seek out other artist around the world that blew me away with inspiration. I think that really made me want to take painting very seriously.

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos? 

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Creo que lo que más me gusta del graffiti es la libertad que ofrece y el hecho de desconectar de la vida cotidiana. Es como escapar de la matriz. Es un mundo aparte. Me encanta el proceso y crear algo con lo que estoy satisfecho, solo para mí. Lo que más aprecio del graffiti es que me ha dado una razón más para viajar, vivir experiencias únicas y conocer y entablar relaciones con gente increíble de todo el mundo.
Lo que menos me gusta… Obviamente, los arrestos, las peleas y los elementos negativos que conlleva el mundo del graffiti. Al mismo tiempo, esas experiencias me han ayudado a formarme como persona. Hay que aceptar lo bueno y lo malo.

I think what o love most about graffiti is the freedom of it and the unplugging from the normal daily life. The escape from the matrix it provides. A world of its own. I love the process and making something Im satisfied with, just for me. More than anything I appreciate about graffiti is how it has given me extra reason to travel, to have very unique experiences and meet and develop relationships with some amazing people around the world.
What I like least..I think obviously the arrests, fights and negative elements that came with coming up in graffiti. At the same time those experiences helped to shape me. Gotta take the good with the bad.

Creo que publicar mis piezas en la web es genial. Ha sido parte de la cultura desde que existe Internet. Antes de eso eran las revistas de graffiti.

I think publishing my artworks on the web is cool. Its been apart of the culture since the internet existed. Before that was graff mags.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Creo que sí. Si no recuerdo mal, fue alrededor de 2005-2006 con mi compañero de pintura y amigo en ese momento, Anroe. Hicimos platas con contornos negros y brillos blancos. Todo rusto. Fue en ese lugar al que llamábamos «la pared tac» en Providence. Pinté una pieza poco impresionante y goteando. En ese momento estaba muy emocionado por pintar y progresar a partir de ahí. Fue increíble y liberador salir por nuestra cuenta, jóvenes y conseguir un lugar con éxito.
Desde entonces hasta ahora, mi estilo ha cambiado muchas veces. De estilos más abstractos a obras más detalladas. Con el tiempo, creo que mi estilo actual ha vuelto al punto de partida, a mis estilos originales del noreste de Estados Unidos, inspirados en las estructuras de letras de Nueva York, sin dejar de lado mi propio estilo, desarrollado a través de la evolución de mi estilo cambiante y mis influencias. Diría que mi sensación actual sigue siendo la emoción de pintar. La salvedad que viene con el tiempo y la experiencia es una cierta calma que ayuda a que un estilo más refinado se traduzca lo mejor posible.

I think I do. If I remember correctly it was around 2005-2006 with my painting partner and friend at the time Anroe. We did silver pieces with black outlines and white force fields. All rusto. It was at this spot we called the tac wall in providence. I painted a drippy unimpressive vize piece. In that moment I was so excited to paint and progress from there. It felt awesome and liberating to go off on our own, young and successfully pull off a spot.
From then to now my style has changed many times. From more abstract styles to more detailed works. Throughout time I think my style now came back full circle to my original northeast American styles of New York inspired letter structures while still raining my own funk that was developed through evolution of my changing style and influences. I would say my feeling now is still an excitement to paint. The caveat that comes with time and experience is a certain calm that helps a more refined style translate the best it can.
