Gouch -

I was born into it by having an older brother who did it. He would go out bombing in the late 80’s. I would ask him to throw me up and sometimes he would. There were always writers in my house, so I was lucky to witness classic Brooklyn writers tagging in books. Naturally I wanted to do it as well. I don’t really think it was about motivation when I started. It was really just something I did because I saw the older crowd that I looked up to doing it. Eventually I met other writers my age and we motivated each other. Studying everything on the streets and developing a good style became my motivation.

Empecé en el mundillo del graffiti porque tenía un hermano mayor que lo hacía. Él salía a pintar grafitis a finales de los 80. Yo le pedía que me subiera a sus espaldas y, a veces, él lo hacía. Siempre había escritores en mi casa, así que tuve la suerte de ver a los escritores clásicos de Brooklyn firmando y haciendo bocetos en los libros. Naturalmente, yo también quería hacerlo. No creo que fuera por motivación cuando empecé. En realidad, era algo que hacía porque veía a los mayores a los que admiraba hacerlo. Inventé el tag GOUCH a principios de los años 90. Admiraba a la crew RIS y me encantaban las letras de la firma GHOST. También me encantaban las firmas que terminaban en SH, como RUSH, CRASH, BASH, etc. Y me encantaba cómo fluían las firmas con OU en el medio, como JOUST o JOUKS. Quería un grafiti que empezara por G, tuviera una OU en el medio y terminara en SH. No se me ocurría ningún grafiti que terminara en SH, así que busqué palabras en el diccionario y encontré la palabra GROUCH. Pero quería un graffiti de 5 letras, como GHOST. Así que eliminé la R y me decidí por una CH, e inventé el graffiti GOUCH.

I made up the name GOUCH in the early 90s. I looked up to the RIS mob and I loved the letters in the tag GHOST. I also loved tags that had an SH at the end like RUSH, CRASH, BASH, etc… And I loved the way tags flowed with an OU in the middle like JOUST or JOUKS. I wanted a tag that started with a G, had an OU in the middle and ended with an SH. I couldn’t think of a tag with an SH at the end, so I looked at words in the dictionary and found the word GROUCH. But I wanted a 5-letter tag like GHOST. So, I chopped off the R and settled for a CH and invented the tag GOUCH.

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Lo mejor es la sensación que tengo cuando lo practico. Es una euforia natural. Es un entrenamiento. Es una prueba de resistencia. Es un reto para ver lo bien que puedes hacerlo en un tiempo determinado.

Lo peor es el bajón y la sensación que tienes cuando llevas un tiempo sin hacerlo. Suena como una droga, jajaja. O tal vez sean solo los vapores de la pintura que inhalo. Jajajaja.

Otra cosa que no me gusta nada es la abundancia de mal gusto que se gratifica en exceso en las redes sociales. Eso solo contribuye a que los escritores nunca progresen en su estilo. Pero, ¿qué podemos hacer? Sin el mal arte, el buen arte no existiría.

The most is the feeling I get when I’m doing it. It’s a natural high. It’s a workout. It’s an endurance test. It’s a challenge to see how good you can do in a specific time frame.

The least is the crash and feeling you get when you’ve haven’t done it in a while. This sounds like a drug LOL – Or maybe it’s just all the paint fumes I’m inhaling. Hahahaah

Another thing I like the least is the abundance of bad style that is overly gratified on social media. That only contributes to writers never progressing in style. But what can we do? Without bad art, good art wouldn’t exist.

Me encanta. Estoy totalmente comprometido con seguir impulsando esta cultura, tal y como hicieron otros antes que yo y siguen haciendo ahora. Si no mantenemos vivo este arte, ¿quién lo hará?

I love it. I’m all about continuously pushing this culture forward just like others before me did and continue to do. If we don’t keep this craft alive who will?

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Mi primera obra la hice en el patio trasero de mi antigua casa: The Dead Tracks. Creo que fue en 1991. La hice con los antiguos colores clásicos de Krylon. Era horrible. No tenía ningún plan; era muy tosca y poco pulida. Bueno, pensándolo ahora, probablemente no era tan mala. Pero en aquel momento me sentí desanimado, así que seguí centrándome en las firmas y los throwies. Una vez que sentí que era bueno con las firmas y los throwies, me centré en las letras rectas. Las hice durante un tiempo y luego me centré en el piecing. No se me dio bien el piecing hasta mucho más tarde. Nunca me salté ningún paso. Seguí el modelo de nuestros ídolos.

Hoy en día me gusta planificar las obras. Sigo improvisando sobre la marcha, pero en general soy capaz de sacar estilos de mi catálogo, que vive dentro de mi cerebro.

My first piece was done in my old backyard: The Dead Tracks. 1991, I think. It was done with old classic Krylon colors. It was terrible. I didn’t have a plan; it was very raw and unpolished. Well, thinking about it now, it probably wasn’t that bad. But at the time I felt discouraged so I continued to focus on tags and throwies. Once I felt I was good at tags and throws, I focused on straight letters. I did those for a while and then I got focused on piecing. I didn’t get good at piecing until much later. I never skipped any steps. I followed the blueprint from our idols.

These days I like to plan a piece. I’m still freestyling along the way but I’m generally able to pull styles from my catalogue that lives inside my brain.
