Into -

I actually owe the letters to my cousin Toni. I changed the order and came up with inTo, insisting for ages on capitalizing the T and writing the rest in lowercase. I found the name extremely fitting in terms of meaning, as I was starting a completely new chapter in my life.

As I painted more and more character and fewer letters, I felt my name needed a little update. Around that time, I realized I was quite skilled with spray paint and that many people liked what I was doing. By then, I already knew most of the people in the scene in my city. So I was already “into” it. But it might also be nice to expand the circle a bit, to «intoxicate” others. Therefore, it seemed natural to extend the name to intoxicated (into_xctd).

En realidad, le debo las letras a mi primo Toni. Cambié el orden y se me ocurrió «inTo», insistiendo durante mucho tiempo en poner la T en mayúscula y escribir el resto en minúscula. Me pareció un nombre muy adecuado en cuanto al significado, ya que estaba empezando un capítulo completamente nuevo en mi vida.

A medida que pintaba más y más personajes y menos letras, sentí que mi nombre necesitaba una pequeña actualización. Por aquella época, me di cuenta de que se me daba bastante bien pintar con spray y que a mucha gente le gustaba lo que hacía. Para entonces, ya conocía a la mayoría de la gente del mundillo de mi ciudad. Así que ya estaba «metido» en ello. Pero también estaría bien ampliar un poco el círculo, para «intoxicar» a otros. Por lo tanto, me pareció natural ampliar el nombre a intoxicated (into_xctd).

Ya de niño me encantaba dibujar. Con el tiempo, mis padres se separaron y me mudé con mi madre de la ciudad al campo para vivir con su nueva pareja. Necesitaba algo con lo que expresarme. Así que empecé a escribir palabrotas de la forma más ilegible posible para que mis padres no pudieran leerlas, desarrollando poco a poco mi propio estilo. En 2007, empecé a escribir el nombre «inTo» después de que un amigo me introdujera en el mundo del graffiti. Unos años más tarde, fui perdiendo poco a poco el interés por las letras, pero mi amor por la pintura en spray se mantuvo. Me centré por completo en los personajes e intenté que parecieran cada vez más realistas. Ahí es donde me encuentro ahora.

I loved to draw already as a child. Eventually, my parents separated, and I moved with my mother from the city to the countryside to live with her new partner. I needed something to express myself. So I started writing bad words as illegibly as possible so my parents couldn’t read them, gradually developing more and more style. In 2007, I started writing the name inTo after a friend introduced me to graffiti. A few years later, I gradually lost interest in letters, but my love for spray paint remained. I focused entirely on characters and tried to make them look more and more realistic. That’s where I am now.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de pintar y lo que menos?

What do you like most about painting and what do you like least?

Lo que no solo me gusta, sino que realmente me encanta del arte urbano es mi pasión por pintar y perderme en ello: el «flujo», cuando te olvidas por completo del tiempo y bloqueas todo lo que te rodea.

También me parece genial pintar un proyecto junto con otras personas y entablar conversaciones. Ya he hecho varias amistades de esta manera. Me parece fantástico pintar en jams e intercambiar ideas con gente de otras ciudades y países, o incluso pintar yo mismo en el extranjero, eso crea un vínculo.

Lo que no me gusta del graffiti son las personas agresivas que siempre están buscando problemas. Me gustaría que la comunidad del graffiti fuera un poco más tolerante en algunos aspectos. Al fin y al cabo, nadie nace siendo un maestro. Menos odio, más amor.

What I not only like, but truly love, about street art is my passion for painting and losing myself in it: the «flow,» when you completely forget about time and block out everything around you.

I also think it’s great to paint a project together with others and get into conversations. Several friendships have already developed this way. I think it’s fantastic to paint at jams and exchange ideas with people from other cities and countries, or maybe even paint abroad myself—that creates a bond.

What I don’t like about graffiti are aggressive people who are always looking for trouble. I wish the graffiti community would be a little more lenient in some places. After all, nobody’s born a master. Less hate, more love.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Recuerdo muy bien mi primera obra. No había ninguna tienda de botes de spray cerca de mi casa. Por suerte, era época de carnaval, así que pude comprar unos botes de laca de colores en una pequeña tienda de mi calle. Esos fueron los botes que utilicé para mi primera obra. La pinté en un viejo muro de ladrillo completamente aislado por donde nunca pasaba nadie, ni siquiera durante el día. A pesar de eso, estaba increíblemente nervioso y no dejaba de mirar a mi alrededor. Por supuesto, en ese momento pensé que el resultado final era fantástico. El spray para el pelo proporcionaba una gran cobertura, algo que no esperaba.

Hoy en día, pinto principalmente en superficies legales y designadas, o muy raramente en lugares donde a nadie le importa. Así que ahora puedo pintar de forma relajada y concentrarme al 100 % en mi obra.

I remember my first piece very well. There wasn’t a spraycanshop near me. Luckily, it was Carnival time, so I was able to buy some colorful hairspray at a small shop down the street. Those were the cans for my first piece. I painted it on a completely secluded old brick wall where nobody ever walked by, even during the day. Despite that, I was incredibly nervous and kept looking around. Of course, I thought the end result was fantastic at the time. The hairspray provided great coverage, which I hadn’t expected.

These days, I mainly paint on legal and designated surfaces, or very rarely in places where nobody really cares. So now I can paint in a relaxed way and concentrate 100% on my artwork.
