Honor One

The origin of my name, Honor, comes from my mom placing a Bible in my suitcase when I lived in Europe In the 80s. I was looking for a positive word in reading through the text, and I kept seeing the word Honor. I liked the letters and even more so the meaning behind the word. The 5 letters with the double O have a nice flow. It was divine providence.

El origen de mi nombre, Honor, viene de cuando mi madre puso una Biblia en mi maleta cuando vivía en Europa en los años 80. Buscaba una palabra positiva mientras leía el texto y me fijé en la palabra «Honor». Me gustaban las letras y, más aún, el significado de la palabra. Las cinco letras con la doble O tienen una bonita cadencia. Fue la providencia divina.

De joven me gustaba mucho dibujar. Dibujaba en cualquier sitio: mesas, escritorios, paredes, lo que se te ocurra. Eran tiempos divertidos. Cuanto más dibujaba, mejor se me daba. Incluso pude tomar algunas clases de arte cuando era adolescente. Por desgracia, no tenía dinero para comprar pinturas, lienzos, etc. Sin embargo, por el lado positivo, algunos de mis compañeros de clase habían empezado a hacer graffitis, y pude conseguir algunas latas de pintura y empecé a aprender a mejorar el control del bote y a hacerlo todo a mano alzada, de forma orgánica, sin utilizar cuadrículas ni proyectores, como sigo haciendo hoy en día.

As a young person I really liked to draw. I would draw on everything. Tables, desks, walls, you name it. Fun times. I started getting better the more I drew. I was even able to take some art classes as a teenager. Unfortunately, I did not have the cash readily available to buy paints and canvases etc. On the positive side though, some of my classmates in school had started writing graffiti, and I was able to get hold of some paint cans and started learning how to get better with can control, and doing everything free hand, organically without using any grids or projectors, as I still do today.

What do you like most about street art and what do you like least?

Lo que más me gusta del graffiti es pintar con colores y crear cosas a gran escala. También disfruto visitando diferentes lugares y pintando en entornos y climas únicos. Me gusta pintar con mis amigos y mis compañeros. También me atrevo a pintar y dibujar en múltiples medios, además de la pintura en aerosol, incluyendo el trabajo con lápiz, rotuladores y pintura sobre lienzo y otros objetos. Por otro lado, mi punto de vista es centrarme en la forma de arte en sí misma, en todas sus facetas, más que en cualquier otra cosa. La negatividad es algo que no me gusta, especialmente cuando se dirige contra esta forma de arte y expresión personal.

My favorite part of graffiti is painting in color and creating things on a large scale. I also enjoy visiting different locations and painting in unique environments and climates. I like to paint with my friends and crews also. I also venture to paint and draw in multiple mediums, besides spray paint, including working in pencil, markers, and painting on canvas and other objects. On the flip side, my viewpoint is to focus on the art form itself, all facets, more than anything. Negativity is something that I do not like, especially when it is directed against this form of art and personal expression.

No me importa que mis obras se muestren en Internet para que otras personas las vean y se inspiren en ellas. Sin embargo, como artista, creo que los artistas deben conservar los derechos sobre sus obras.

I’m fine if my artwork is shown online for others to see and be inspired by the work, As an artist, however, I do believe in artists maintaining the rights to their work.

Do you remember the first piece?

No puedo olvidar mi primer graffiti. He incluido esta imagen en la lista de fotos solicitadas para esta entrevista, precisamente por esta pregunta. Mi primera obra fue el retrato de una mujer en el río Los Ángeles, situado en el extremo norte de la ciudad. La pintura era un homenaje a uno de mis artistas favoritos de mi juventud, Patrick Nagel, cuyas imágenes neoart déco y pop art estereotiparon los años 80.

Las boquillas y la pintura han evolucionado mucho desde entonces. Estas experiencias me llevaron a crear retratos a gran escala en espacios públicos, en lo que sigo centrándome hoy en día. Al recordar mis años de formación, esos momentos fueron un despertar para mí. Nunca olvides de dónde vienes…

I cannot forget my first graffiti piece. I have included this image in the list of requested pictures for this interview, just because of this question. My first piece was a portrait of a woman in the Los Angeles River, located up on the north end of the City. The painting was a tribute to one of my favorite artists growing up, Patrick Nagel, whose neo art-deco pop-art imagery stereotyped the 80s.

Caps and paint have come a long way since then. These experiences led me on a path to create larger scale portraits in public spaces, which I still focus on today. Reminiscing to my formative years, such moments were an awakening for me. Never forget where you come from…

Quiero dar las gracias a mis amigos, familiares, compañeros y mentores. La mayoría de mis profesores de arte ya han fallecido, pero fueron grandes artistas por méritos propios, siguiendo la estela de grandes figuras como Diego Rivera, los surrealistas franceses, Norman Rockwell, Grant Wood y Thomas Hart Benton. Y, lo que es más importante, quiero dar las gracias a los muchos artistas y compañeros con los que he pintado. Por último, quiero dar las gracias a mi esposa, mi familia y mis amigos cercanos, que me han apoyado para mejorar en este oficio.

I want to give a shout out to friends, family, crews, and mentors. Most of my art instructors have passed, but they were accomplished in their own right being in the lineage of great artists such as Diego Rivera, French Surrealists, Norman Rockwell, Grant Wood, and Thomas Hart Benton. More importantly I want to shout out to the many artists and crews that I have painted with.
