¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Originalmente ponía Ease durante un año, pero no tardé en cansarme de la «E» repetitiva en ambos extremos, así que lo cambié a Easy. Sr. Easy, o Sr. Ease, es sólo un juego de palabras con la palabra «mysteries» ya que suenan igual cuando se hablan en inglés.
I originally wrote Ease for about a year, but it didn’t take long to grow tired of the repetitive “E” on both ends so I switched it to Easy. Mr. Easy, or Mr. Ease, is just a play on the word “mysteries” since they sound the same when spoken.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Me interesé por el arte desde muy joven y empecé a dibujar de niño mucho antes de que pueda recordar. Ese interés me acompañó durante toda mi infancia, sobre todo haciendo ilustraciones o dibujos de estilo cómic. Una vez que llegué a los 14 o 15 años me introdujeron en el graffiti por algunos de mis amigos de entonces.
No había mucho de la escena del graffiti donde crecí en cuanto a la calidad del trabajo que se hacía, pero miraba más y más graffiti en las revistas y en internet. Ver todos los colores brillantes que se usaban a gran escala era un gran contraste con las cosas en blanco y negro que hacía con lápiz o tinta en los trozos de papel en casa. Además había aspectos de que era ilegal y secreto, lo que probablemente me atrajo tanto como a un joven adolescente.
I took an interest in art at a very young age and started drawing as a child long before I can remember. That interest stuck with me through my childhood, mostly doing illustration type artwork or comic/cartoon style drawings. Once I got to be about 14 or 15 I was introduced to graffiti by a few of my friends at the time.
There wasn’t much of a graffiti scene where I grew up as far as quality work being done, but I’d look at more and more graffiti in magazines and online. Seeing all of the bright colors being used on a large scale was a huge contrast to the black and white stuff I was doing in pencil or ink on pieces of paper at home. Plus there were the aspects of it being illegal and secretive, which probably appealed to me just as much being a young teenager.

What is your style?
Hay una gran calidad de ilustración en mis paredes, tanto en las letras como en otros elementos. Estoy seguro de que eso viene de las obras de arte que hice antes de pintar graffiti. Me gusta el trabajo con líneas claras y nítidas con muchos detalles. El diseño y la estructura de las letras de mis piezas está muy influenciada por el hecho de pintar sólo chapa la mayoría de los años, creo que mi estilo realmente comenzó a desarrollarse.
Le doy la misma importancia a la estructura de las letras, a la combinación de colores, a la habilidad técnica, y a ser capaz de hacer otras cosas en una pared además de las letras estrictamente… así que trato de mantenerme bastante bien redondeado en esas categorías. Nunca quise ser «el chico de los personajes», pero tampoco quiero ser el chico que no puede hacer nada más que su nombre… así que hoy en día mis paredes suelen tener un tema general que une mi pieza, los personajes, algún tipo de fondo, así como mucho trabajo de logotipos.
There’s a pretty strong illustration quality to my walls in both the letters and other elements. I’m sure that comes from the artwork I did prior to graffiti. I like sharp, clean line work with a lot of detail. The layout and letter structure of my pieces is pretty heavily influenced from only painting freights most of the years I think my style really began to develop.
I place equal importance on letter structure, color schemes, technical ability, and being able to do other things on a wall besides strictly letters… so I try to stay fairly well rounded in those categories. I never wanted to be “the character guy”, but I don’t want to be the guy who can’t do anything but their name either… so these days my walls generally have an overall theme tying together my piece, characters, some sort of background, as well as plenty of logo work.

Do you remember the first piece?
La primera cosa que pinté fue bajo un puente del tren a finales de 2003. Desearía tener una foto de ello, pero puedo recordar cómo era; un trozo de «ease» blanco, negro y rojo y yo. Fue una explosión, sin embargo, mi amigo Deed me llevó allí después de haber estado dibujando letras durante unas semanas. Intenté pintar un personaje junto a su pieza también.
Me enganché inmediatamente, fue un gran momento y no podía esperar para intentar hacer algo mejor en la siguiente pared. Después de 17 años en el graffiti y de convertirme en un artista/muralista a tiempo completo, ahí es donde mi mentalidad ha vuelto otra vez; sólo quiero divertirme pintando con mis amigos mientras continúo progresando y haciendo paredes de mejor calidad a las que pueda mirar atrás y ser feliz. Tengo una red increíble de artistas positivos y talentosos a mi alrededor en estos días, así que ser capaz de hacer lo que amo y pintar con buena compañía es todo lo que realmente podría pedir.
The first thing I ever painted was under a train bridge towards the end of 2003. I wish I still had a photo of it, but I can remember what it looked like; white, black, and red “ease” piece and I. It was a blast though, my friend Deed took me down there after I’d been sketching letters for a few weeks. I tried painting a character next to his piece as well.
I was hooked immediately, it was a great time and I couldn’t wait to try to do something better on the next wall. After 17 years in graffiti and becoming a full-time artist/muralist, that’s pretty much where my mindset has gone back to; just wanting to have fun painting with my friends while continuing to progress and do better quality walls that I can look back on and be happy with. I’ve got an amazing network of positive, talented artists around me these days, so being able to do what I love and paint with good company is all I could really ask for.
