¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

Empecé a escribir otros nombres como MR.BLOND, FARAO y STEP. Pero en 1989 pensé que era hora de cambiar de nombre y se me ocurrió SHAME. Me gustaban mucho las letras, la combinación de letras (donde la H y la M son bastante estáticas y están rodeadas por la S, la A y la E, que son más redondeadas y flexibles) y el significado de la palabra SHAME. Pero como ya había un SHAME en Nueva York, empecé a añadir una D para convertirlo en DSHAME (como en; THE SHAME) unos meses más tarde. Pero algunos de mis amigos a veces se referían a mí como SHAMER. Fue entonces cuando todo encajó y mi nombre se convirtió en DESHAMER. Me encanta este nombre, ya que me da muchas oportunidades para acortarlo a DESH, SHA o AMER si quiero o tengo que hacerlo, o ir a por todas y hacer una pieza de DESHAMER. Además, siempre he tenido algunos nombres secundarios para jugar con diferentes letras y combinaciones de letras, como DRUM, MORE, SIN/SINDROM, RIP, RIM, PISHOOD, etc…

I started to write a few other names like MR.BLOND, FARAO and STEP. But in 1989 I figured it was time for a new name and came up with SHAME. I really liked the letters, the letter combination (where both the H and M are pretty static and are surrounded by the S, A and E who are rounder and more flexible) and the meaning of the word SHAME. But as there already was a SHAME in New York, I started to add a D to make it DSHAME (as in; THE SHAME) a few months later. But some of my friends sometimes referred to me as SHAMER. That’s when it all came together, and my name became DESHAMER. I love this name as it gives me plenty of opportunities to shorten it to DESH, SHA or AMER if I want or have to, or go all out and do a DESHAMER piece. Next to that, I always had a few side names to play with different letters and letter combinations, like DRUM, MORE, SIN/SINDROM, RIP, RIM, PISHOOD, etc…

 

 

 

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Cuando visité a mi tía en Amsterdam a principios de 1985, me inspiré en todas las firmas que había en su barrio. Así que empecé a firmar a MR.BLOND en los bancos de los parques de mi casa con un rotulador Edding 3000. Pero no fue hasta que vi STYLE WARS, que se emitió en la televisión nacional de los Países Bajos en octubre de 1985, cuando me animé a empezar a hacer piezas.

When visiting my aunt in Amsterdam in early 1985, I was inspired by all the tags in her neighbourhood. So I started tagging MR.BLOND on park benches at home with an Edding 3000 marker. But it wasn’t until I saw STYLE WARS, which was aired on national tv in The Netherlands in October 1985, that I was triggered to start doing pieces. 

 

 

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos? 

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Me encanta el graffiti porque es una forma estupenda de expresarme artísticamente y, al mismo tiempo, de descargar adrenalina. También he conocido a gente estupenda gracias al graffiti, con algunos de los cuales soy amigo desde hace casi 40 años.

Lo que detesto en el graffiti es la gente que reclama lineas, falta al respeto al trabajo de los demás o pretende ser el rey sin la calidad y la cantidad de trabajo que validen ese título.

I love graffiti because it is a great way to express myself artistically and at the same time get the adrenaline pumping. I also met some great people because of graffiti, with some of which I am already friends for almost 40 years. 

What I hate in graffiti is people that claim yards, disrespect other people’s work or claim to be king without the quality and quantity of work to validate that title.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza? 

Do you remember the first piece?

Un amigo y yo vimos SYLE WARS y quisimos hacer piezas también, así que fuimos a la ferretería local y nos hicimos con un bote de spray plata y otro negro. Pintamos una pieza YEN muy fea en un colegio cercano a casa, pero la semilla estaba plantada y queríamos hacer más. La combinación de creatividad y adrenalina nos tenía enganchados. Hoy en día me sigue gustando dibujar y pintar y, por supuesto, mi estilo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de décadas de pintura.

A friend and I saw SYLE WARS and wanted to do pieces too, so we went to the local hardware store and racked a chrome and a black spraycan. We painted a very ugly YEN piece on a school close to home, but the seed was planted, and we wanted to do more. The combination of creativity and adrenaline had us hooked. Nowadays I still love sketching and painting and my style of course developed over the decades of painting.
