Comeske

My pseudonym or tag name comes from the word commercial.  Growing up in the Bronx in the 80s-90s and always seeing graffiti everywhere from trains , streets to highways and everything in between.  There was a writer whom was definitely a style master he wrote «Cromag» Imok (rest in peace). I was so interested and intrigued on how he wrote his tag that i fell in love with his use of the letters C, O and M. At that time around 1990-93 i lived off the i95 highway, there was a sign on the road way that said » No Commercial Traffic». So i saw an opportunity to take some letters from the word Commercial and began writing «Comme» so i can use the letters C, O and M and added a E after two M’s. Cromag would loop his M’s at the bottom of the letter so i began looping my M’s at the bottom and top in attempts to be original and inspired at the same time. After writing «Comme» with loops at the bottom and top of my M’s locally,  a local writer from the co-op city section 5 area of the Bronx who wrote Loco my friends older brother  realized how i was looping my M’s and said it was to much i should get rid of one M in preparation to get a better tag flow in my initial style development.  So, i took one M off and began writing «Come, Comer, Comeone, and Comeske». Then looked for inspiration from everyone i knew after that. Especially in the beginning,  with tags and throw-ups being first in style development and me beginning to think about taking it into the streets.

Mi seudónimo o nombre artístico proviene de la palabra «comercial». Crecí en el Bronx en los años 80 y 90, y siempre veía graffitis por todas partes, desde trenes y calles hasta autopistas y todo lo demás. Había un escritor que era sin duda un maestro del estilo y escribía «Cromag» Imok (que en paz descanse). Me interesaba y me intrigaba tanto cómo escribía su firma que me enamoré de su uso de las letras C, O y M. En aquella época, entre 1990 y 1993, vivía junto a la autopista I-95, y había una señal en la carretera que decía «No Commercial Traffic» (Prohibido el tráfico comercial). Así que vi la oportunidad de tomar algunas letras de la palabra «Commercial» y empecé a escribir «Comme» para poder usar las letras C, O y M, y añadí una E después de dos M. Cromag había M en la parte inferior de la letra, así que yo empecé a hacer bucles con mis M en la parte inferior y superior, en un intento de ser original e inspirarme al mismo tiempo. Después de escribir «Comme» con bucles en la parte inferior y superior de mis M en mi zona, un escritor local de la sección 5 de Co-op City, en el Bronx, que escribía Loco, el hermano mayor de mi amigo, se dio cuenta de cómo hacía los bucles en mis M y me dijo que era demasiado y que debía eliminar una M para conseguir un mejor flujo en mi estilo inicial. Así que quité una M y empecé a escribir «Come, Comer, Comeone y Comeske». Después de eso, busqué inspiración en todas las personas que conocía. Especialmente al principio, cuando las firmas y los throw-ups eran lo primero en el desarrollo del estilo y yo empezaba a pensar en llevarlo a las calles.

What motivated you to get started painting?

Lo que me motivó a empezar a pintar fue vivir en Monroe Projects, en la zona de Soundview, en el Bronx, donde el hip hop estaba presente en cada esquina. Crecimos con ZuLu Nation organizando jam sessions semanales y aprendiendo música y viendo graffitis y bboying a diario. Además, sabiendo que el graffiti era el más antiguo de los cuatro pilares principales del hip hop, teniendo acceso y viendo a escritores legendarios hacer lo suyo tanto en los trenes, como en las calles y en los muros de producción con sus obras, tuve la suerte de inspirarme en algunas de las mejores culturas de la época y hasta el día de hoy. Con nombres como Dero, Serve, Per, Bio, Nicer, BG183, Seen, Duster, Clark, Yes2, Tore, Ces, Jew, KingBee, Vase y muchos más que me llamaron la atención mientras crecía. Me sentí motivado de forma natural para empezar a sumergirme en el estudio del estilo e intentar desarrollar mis firmas, mis throw-ups y, más tarde, mis piezas. Así que, desde la secundaria hasta el instituto y los primeros años de la universidad, lo único en lo que me centré y me dediqué fue en las firmas y los throw-ups. Una vez que lo comprendí y quise alejarme del elemento callejero del bombing, empecé a pensar en aprender a hacer piezas, también conocidas como wildstyle, alrededor de 2003-04, pero no me tomé en serio el wildstyle hasta que me uní a mi hermano Abe BT Kis y realmente me lo tomé en serio alrededor de 2007-08.

What motivated me to start painting was living in Monroe Projects in the Soundview area of The Bronx.  Where HipHop was on every corner.  We grew up with ZuLu Nation throwing jams weekly and us learning music and seeing graffiti and Bboying daily.  As well understanding that graffiti was the oldest of the four main pillars of Hip-hop, having access to and seeing legendary writers do thoer thing both on the trains, street and production walls with pieces,  i was lucky to be inspired by some of the cultures best at that time and until this day. With names likr Dero, Serve, Per, Bio, Nicer, BG183, Seen , Duster, Clark, Yes2, Tore, Ces, Jew, KingBee, Vase, and so many more that caught my eye growing up. I was naturally motivated to begin diving into style studies and try to develop my tags, throw-ups then later on to pieces.  So in from junior high school to high school and the first few years of college all i really dealt with and focused on was tags and throw ups. Once i understood that and wanted to pull away from the street element of bombing ,i began thinking about learning how to do pieces AkA wildstyle around 2003-04 but didnt take wildstyle seriously until in linked up with my brother Abe BT Kis and really took it serious around 2007-08.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

Sinceramente, lo que más me gusta y disfruto del graffiti es el desarrollo del estilo, ya sea la manipulación de la forma de las letras o los colores, pero también todo lo demás. La forma de hablar, vestir y abordar esta forma de arte debe hacerse de manera auténtica y respetuosa, con una comprensión de los fundamentos y la historia. La búsqueda del desarrollo de tu propio estilo a partir de los elementos fundamentales y ser conocido por lo que haces dentro de la cultura del estilo de escritura, también conocido como graffiti. Lo que menos me gusta del graffiti es la política, el ego y los enfoques poco originales que algunos adoptan al intentar involucrarse en la cultura. Realmente me desagradan aquellos que no se informan ni investigan la historia.

Honestly what i like and enjoy most about graffiti is style development whether its the manipulation of letter form or colors but as well everything in between.  The way you talk, dress, and approach the art form, it should be done in a authentic and respectful way with an understanding of foundation and history.  The seeking of developing you own style of the foundational elements and being known for what you do within the culture of style writing aka graffiti.  What i like least about graffiti is the politics, ego and the unoriginal approaches some take while trying to be involved in the culture. I really dislike those that dont do the knowledge and research the history.

Me encanta la idea de considerarme underground dentro del escenario principal de la cultura, pero conocido entre mis compañeros que se esfuerzan en lo que respecta a estilos salvajes y producciones. Me siento muy halagado y agradecido de que te hayas interesado por mi arte y lo conozcáis. Además, eso es exactamente lo que necesitaba durante los últimos años: dar a conocer mi arte a un público más amplio y a las masas del mundo del graffiti, así como a todo el mundo del arte. He dedicado tanto tiempo a desarrollar mis estilos que creo que estoy listo para que el mundo vea lo que puedo hacer con el estilo writing, también conocido como graffiti, y el arte contemporáneo/mix media. Y seguir dando a conocer lo que hago en lo que respecta al arte. Estoy muy emocionado, muy agradecido y honrado por la oportunidad de esta entrevista y publicación. GRACIAS.

I love the idea of me considering myself to be underground within the main stage of the culture but known amongst my peers whom put in the work when it comes to wildstyles and productions. You guys reaching out and being aware of my art , im super flattered and grateful.  As well that is exactly what i needed over the course of the last few years was exposing my art to a bigger audience and the masses of the graffiti world as well as everyone in the art world. Ive been spending so much time in developing my styles that i believe im ready for the world stage to see what i can do with style writing aka graffiti and contemporary/mix media art. Do you remember the first piece?

Recuerdo mi primera obra o intento de estilo salvaje/burner. Fue en el verano de 2004-2005, en una pared privada del patio trasero que tenía Infa Bt Fx, donde solíamos relajarnos, celebrar fiestas, bailar y pintar graffitis, situada en la zona de Castle Hill del Bronx, justo al lado de la línea 6 del metro. Él tenía algo de espacio en la pared y, después de decidir no estar en las calles y empezar a tomarme el graffiti en serio y llevarlo al siguiente nivel, decidí aprovechar lo que sabía, mis bases con las que me sentía cómodo (tags, throw-ups, letras rectas) y empezar a estudiar más a fondo el arte con los wildstyles. Hablé con Infa y le pregunté si le gustaría empezar este viaje de piecing conmigo, y me dijo que sí. Así que empezamos a usar su patio trasero para practicar, antes de salir a la calle con wildstyles/burners. Mi primera pieza fue una pieza clásica de estilo panel estructurada al estilo neoyorquino en el verano de 2004. Después de un par de años haciendo piezas en el patio trasero de Infa, el estilo se convirtió en algo más parecido a lo que hago ahora, el estilo técnico y orgánico wildstyle de Nueva York, pero eso fue después de la influencia de algunos mentores de estilo de BT FX TM7 PFE KAOSinc. Entonces empecé a entender realmente un enfoque más técnico alrededor de 2007-08.

I do remember my first piece  or attempt at a wildstyle/ burner. It was the summer of 2004-5 in a private backyard wall that Infa Bt Fx had where we  would chill, throw parties, dance and write graff located in the CastleHill section of the Bronx right off the 6 Line train. He had some wall space  and after deciding not to be in the streets and start taking graffiti seriously and to the next level.  I decided to take what i knew my foundation which i became comfortable with (tags, throw-ups,  straight letters) and start studying the art further with wildstyles. I spoke with Infa and asked him if he would like to start this journey of piecing with me , he said yes. So we began using his backyard to practice,  before actually hitting the streets with wildstyles/burners.  My first piece was a classic panel style New York structured style piece in the summer of 2004. After a couple of years rocking pieces in Infa’s backyard the style developed into something closer to what i do know ,technical organic New York wildstyle,  but that was after the influence of some style mentors from BT FX TM7 PFE KAOSinc. Then i really started to understand a more technical approach around 2007-08.

En primer lugar, me gustaría dedicar un momento a darte las gracias por darme la oportunidad de compartir parte de mi historia y mi trayectoria en esto que llamamos escritura de estilo. También quiero dar las gracias a aquellos que han tenido y tienen una influencia directa en el desarrollo de mi estilo a lo largo de las décadas. Desde pintar grafitis en las calles y hacer racking (rillzing) hasta viajar para realizar producciones de estilo salvaje. A mis equipos fundamentales, no estaría donde estoy si no fuera por los inicios de Cbp, Cbc, Lsp, Tfs, Pk, Cbs (Bronx), Odk, Irok, Rfc, Cm, a mis hermanos que me guiaron en mis wildstyles y me ayudaron a convertirme en el artista que soy hoy, Bronxteam, Tm7, Pfemobb, Kisgang, Fxcrew, Kaosinc, Rot.
Gracias a todos, esto es solo el principio y estoy listo para darlo todo hasta el final. A mi hermano Sease Lsp, gracias por ser mi mejor amigo y mi as en la manga, por darlo todo y no dejar nunca de creer en mí y en mis capacidades, te aprecio más de lo que imaginas. Paz.
