¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Cuando empecé a pintar en 1997, no estaba seguro de qué firma utilizar. Por aquel entonces, se emitían con frecuencia anuncios televisivos de una serie de documentales sobre Cassius Clay, el famoso boxeador. El nombre «Clay» me resultó familiar de inmediato, y empecé a hacer mis primeras obras con él. Con el tiempo, adopté varias firmas: Theta (la más utilizada), pero también Drips, Alien, Trash y otras. Siempre me ha gustado cambiar mi firma; me resulta estimulante desarrollar nuevas letras y nuevas formas. En los últimos años, decidí volver a mi firma original, Clay, añadiendo «Mister» delante, aunque sigo utilizando ocasionalmente otras firmas en mis obras.
When I started painting in 1997, I wasn’t sure which tag to use. At the time, there were frequent TV commercials for a series of documentaries about Cassius Clay, the famous boxer. The name “Clay” immediately sounded familiar to me, and I started doing my first pieces with it. Over time, I adopted various tags: Theta (the most used), but also Drips, Alien, Trash, and others. I’ve always enjoyed changing my signature; I’ve found it stimulating to develop new letters and new shapes. In recent years, I decided to go back to my original tag, Clay, adding “Mister” in front, even though I still occasionally use other tags in my pieces.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Es difícil decir exactamente qué fue lo que me motivó a empezar a pintar. Me encontré inmerso en el graffiti casi como si estuviera predestinado. En mi ciudad natal, cuando era joven, no había mucho que hacer. Un amigo empezó a hacer sus primeras obras y muchos de nosotros le seguimos para pasar el rato. La mayoría acabó abandonando por diversas razones, pero yo seguí adelante, pasando por períodos de actividad más intensos y otros más tranquilos.
It’s hard to say exactly what motivated me to start painting. I found myself immersed in graffiti almost as if it were predestined. In my hometown, when I was young, there wasn’t much to do. A friend started doing his first pieces, and many of us followed suit to pass the time. Most eventually quit for various reasons, but I kept going, going through more intense and quieter periods of activity.

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?
Lo que me encanta del graffiti es el olor de la pintura en aerosol, la emoción de pintar en las calles y, a veces, interactuar con la gente, la aventura de explorar lugares abandonados, el desafío constante de mejorar y la energía dinámica que implica crear una obra. Lo que no me gusta es la actitud de estrella de rock que algunos escritores desarrollan una vez que alcanzan un poco de fama. A veces me dan ganas de decirles: «Amigo, estás haciendo graffiti, ¡no has salvado al mundo! ¡Deja el ego a un lado y relájate un poco!».
What I love about graffiti is the smell of spray paint, the thrill of painting on the streets and sometimes interacting with people, the adventure of exploring abandoned places, the constant challenge of improving, and the dynamic energy involved in creating a piece. What I don’t like is the rockstar attitude that some writers develop once they gain a bit of fame. Sometimes I feel like telling them, “Buddy, you’re doing graffiti, you didn’t save the world! Drop the ego and relax a little!”

Siempre me ha gustado la idea de compartir mi trabajo y ofrecer una perspectiva personal como artista. Creo que los sitios web, las páginas de redes sociales, los libros y los fanzines de graffitis servirán, en el futuro, como testimonio vivo de este increíble movimiento.
I’ve always liked the idea of sharing my work and offering a personal perspective as an artist. I believe that websites, social media pages, books, and graffiti fanzines will, in the future, serve as a living testimony of this incredible movement.
¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
Recuerdo claramente mi primera obra. En realidad, era un títere punk, probablemente tomado de la portada de un álbum de Rancid, pintado en un solo color con una pequeña firma debajo. Era horrible. El lugar era ilegal: una caja eléctrica cerca de un río. Recuerdo que fuimos allí alrededor de las diez de la noche en verano, y con prisas y mucho miedo, dos amigos y yo conseguimos pintar tres obras, más o menos. Sinceramente, a primera vista, nadie habría pensado: «Sí, este chico tiene verdadero talento para el graffiti». Pero con dedicación, trabajo duro y mucho estudio del trabajo de otros, creo que al final conseguí crear algo bueno.
I clearly remember my first piece. Actually, it was a punk character, probably taken from a Rancid album cover, painted in a single color with a small tag underneath. It was awful. The spot was illegal — an electrical box near a river. I remember we went there around ten o’clock at night in the summer, and in a rush and with a lot of fear, I and two friends managed to paint three pieces, more or less. Honestly, at first glance, you wouldn’t have thought, “Yeah, this guy’s got a real talent for graffiti.” But with dedication, hard work, and a lot of studying others’ work, I think I eventually managed to create something good.

Para mí, el graffiti ha sido una forma de terapia. Pintar siempre ha sido mi salvavidas cuando necesitaba levantar el ánimo. A veces me pregunto: «¿Dónde estaría sin esta pasión?». El graffiti te hace crecer, tanto artística como personalmente. Pone a prueba tus habilidades, tu determinación, y pintar te devuelve al momento presente, casi como una forma de meditación. Le debo mucho a esta forma de arte y estoy feliz de que se haya convertido en parte de mi vida, y aún más feliz de que en los últimos años también se haya convertido en mi trabajo.
For me, graffiti has been a form of therapy. Painting has always been my lifeline whenever I needed to lift my spirits. Sometimes I wonder, “Where would I be without this passion?” Graffiti makes you grow — both artistically and personally. It challenges your skills, your determination, and painting itself brings you back to the present moment, almost like a form of meditation. I owe a lot to this art form and I’m happy it became part of my life — even happier that in recent years it has also become my job.
