Jun Chihara es un tatuador japonés residente en Barcelona, tras dedicarse al mundo de los negocios en Japón y ver como quebraba la empresa en la que trabajaba muchas horas al día, decidió sacar el dedo y elegir al azar un nuevo país y continente donde empezar desde cero su vida, empezando por dedicarse a la restauración en un restaurante en Barcelona hasta ir a mas de 5 estudios de tatuaje y que le rechazaran por no tener experiencia, hasta que el estudio de tatuaje de Santiago Lombardi le abrió sus puertas para empezar a trabajar en el arte del tatuaje y finalmente compaginarlo con el muralismo.
Jun Chihara is a Japanese tattoo artist living in Barcelona, after working in the business world in Japan and seeing how the company he worked for went bankrupt, he decided to take his finger out and randomly choose a new country and place to start his life from scratch, He started working as a waiter in a restaurant in Barcelona, Jun went to more than 5 tattoo studios and he was rejected because he had no experience or portfolio, until Santiago Lombardi’s tattoo studio opened its doors to him to start working in the art of tattooing and finally combine it with muralism.

What motivated you to get started painting?
Empecé a tatuar en Barcelona hace 13 años. En 2019, la propietaria de un restaurante japonés en Barcelona que me había ayudado mucho, me pidió que pintara algo en una gran pared en el centro de su nuevo restaurante cuando abriera un nuevo local. Esta fue mi primera experiencia con la pintura mural.
I started tattooing in Barcelona13 years ago. In 2019, the owner of a Japanese restaurant in Barcelona who had helped me a lot, asked me to paint something on a large wall in the center of her new restaurant when she opened a new location. This was my first experience with wall painting.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del muralismo y lo que menos?
What do you like most about muralism and what do you like least?
Lo que me gusta de la pintura mural es que me permite crear una atmósfera diferente en mi trabajo en comparación con mi base de arte del tatuaje. Es la sensación de pintar a mano alzada a gran escala, no sobre piel o papel, un tipo diferente de materiales y el proceso de considerar la distancia a la pared a medida que avanzo.
Lo que más valoro son las posibilidades de futuro que surgen del proyecto y la gente maravillosa que conozco a través de él, incluidas las personas que lo apoyan. Quizá lo que menos me gusta es que es una profesión difícil de ejercer o en la que hay que entrar.
What I like about wall painting is that it allows me to create a different atmosphere in my work compared to my base of tattoo art. It ́s the sensation of freehand on a large scale, not on skin or paper, some different type of materials and the process of considering the distance to the wall as I progress.
What I value the most are the future possibilities that arise from the project and the wonderful people I meet through it, including those who support it. Perhaps what I like least is that it’s a challenging profession to pursue or enter into.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera obra?
Do you remember the first piece?
Fue en Badalona, Barcelona, España en 2019.
Sí, recuerdo ese momento. Cuando el dueño del restaurante me pidió que pintara la pared, yo no tenía ninguna experiencia, así que estaba emocionado y nervioso a la vez. Sin embargo, una sola frase del dueño cambió mi mentalidad. Me dijo: «Tu núcleo es como artista del tatuaje, pero ¿por qué no intentas explorar las distintas posibilidades artísticas de tu círculo? No hace falta salirse del círculo».
Al día siguiente, practiqué con pinturas acrílicas, y al día siguiente comencé el proyecto en el restaurante. Esta oportunidad despertó mi interés por expresar mi arte de diversas formas.

Yes, I remember that moment. When the restaurant owner asked me to do the wall painting, I had no experience at all, so I was both excited and nervous. However, a single phrase from the owner changed my mindset. She said, “Your core is as a tattoo artist, but why not try exploring the different artistic possibilities around your circle? There’s no need to step outside of the circle”.
The next day, I practicing with acrylic paints, and the day after that, I began the project at the restaurant. This opportunity sparked my interest in expressing my art in various forms.
