Syck

My name is rather abstract, and I chose this alias more than 25 years ago because I liked the combination of letters. Today, I would choose an even more abstract name, since many people confuse “syck” with “sick,” which I find boring.

I actually started painting out of boredom. In 1996, I was young, and sheer boredom drove me to doodle aimlessly and embellish my real name. What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Lo que más me gusta del graffiti es lo mucho que me ha marcado y la cantidad de gente que he conocido gracias a él, además de los momentos increíblemente buenos que he vivido. La libertad de pintar fue el punto de partida, y hoy en día es increíble tener estas conexiones con tanta gente. Diseñar paredes grandes y pequeñas y ayudar a dar forma al paisaje urbano es también una de las cosas que más me gustan del graffiti en general.

Lo que no me gusta del graffiti es la estrechez de miras de muchos escritores. Todos deberíamos ser más abiertos y tolerantes y no odiarnos tanto unos a otros.

What I like most about graffiti is how strongly it has shaped me and how many people I’ve met through it, as well as the incredibly good times I’ve had. The freedom to paint was the starting point, and today it’s amazing to have these connections with so many people. Designing both large and small walls and helping to shape the urban landscape is also one of the things I generally love about graffiti.

What I don’t like about graffiti is the narrow-mindedness of many writers. We should all be more open and tolerant and not have so much hatred toward one another.

Por supuesto, nunca olvidas tu primera obra. La sensación de pintar con spray por primera vez y cambiar una superficie a tu gusto fue mágica en aquel entonces. Las primeras obras en general, las frustraciones iniciales cuando las cosas no salían bien y la primera vez que lograste plasmar algo en una pared: esos son los momentos que me hicieron seguir haciéndolo y seguir amándolo incluso hoy, después de tantos años. Of course, you never forget your first piece. The feeling of spraying for the first time and changing a surface in a way that you yourself like was magical back then. The first pieces in general, the initial frustrations when things didn’t work out, and the first time you managed to pull something off on a wall—those are the moments that made me keep doing this and loving it even today, after so many years.
