Song

SONG is my given name that came from my family and heritage, which means to eulogize in mandarin. In the context of graffiti, I write SONG as a representation of my frequency with the environment and state of mind I’m in, like creating a visual “song” in every wall I paint on wherever I go.

SONG es mi nombre de pila, que proviene de mi familia y mi herencia cultural, y significa «elogiar» en mandarín. En el contexto del graffiti, escribo SONG como una representación de mi frecuencia con el entorno y mi estado de ánimo, como si creara una «canción» visual en cada pared que pinto allá donde voy.

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Empecé con el graffiti en 2013 en busca de libertad y expresión personal en la rígida ciudad de Singapur, de donde soy originario, buscando formas de dejar mi huella en espacios ocultos de la ciudad. Cuando empecé a viajar fuera de Singapur para hacer «spraycations», me surgió la motivación de pintar en todas las ciudades que visitaba y conocer a otros escritores/artistas con ideas afines para colaborar y aprender sobre la cultura del graffiti desde una perspectiva más amplia a través de mi viaje. Desde entonces, me obsesioné con pintar en las calles y ver hasta dónde podía desarrollar mi estilo.

I started graffiti in 2013 in search of freedom and self expression in a ridged city of Singapore where I’m from, as i find ways to put my mark in hidden spaces in the city. When i started traveling outside of Singapore for spraycations, it sparked a motivation to paint in every city i visited and meeting other like minded writers/artist to collaborate and learn about graffiti culture in a wider perspective thru my journey. From then on, I was obsessed with painting on the streets and see how far my style can develop. 

  

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

El graffiti me ha proporcionado muchas experiencias positivas y extraordinarias, permitiéndome establecer conexiones con personas y culturas de todos los ámbitos de la vida simplemente pintando mi arte en las paredes. En el sudeste asiático, siempre nos referimos a ello como «Graffiti Connection», al tener hermanos y hermanas cercanos en todo el mundo a quienes les encanta pintar y crear. Para ser sincero, no tengo nada negativo que decir sobre el graffiti.

Graffiti led me to many positive and crazy experiences, building connections with people and culture from all walks of life through just painting my art on the walls. In South East Asia, we always refer that as “Graffiti Connection”, having close brothers and sisters around the world that just loves to paint and create. To be honest i have nothing bad to say about graffiti haha.

Creo que es una plataforma increíble para mostrar el graffiti procedente de mi pequeña isla de Singapur, donde la cultura del graffiti está muy presente en nuestra comunidad, a pesar del entorno tan estricto y rígido en el que vivimos, y nos sitúa en el mapa del mundo del graffiti.

I think is an awesome platform to showcase Graffiti coming from my small island of Singapore, where graffiti culture exists strong within our community in such a strict and ridged environment we live in, and putting us in the map of the graffiti world.

  

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

La primera obra que pinté fue en un rincón escondido de la azotea abandonada de un edificio llamado Eminent Plaza en 2013, donde ya habían pintado muchos escritores legendarios de Singapur. Sin duda, era intimidante, pero fue muy agradable ver y estudiar sus técnicas en ese momento en el que acababa de empezar. A día de hoy, sigo sintiendo esa adrenalina, satisfacción y libertad con cada obra que pinto en las paredes, independientemente de si el resultado es bueno o malo.

The first piece i painted was on a hidden corner of a abandoned roof top building called Eminent Plaza in 2013, where many legendary writers from Singapore already painted. It was definitely intimidating but it was really nice to see and study their techniques during that point of time where i just started. At this point in  time, i still feel that adrenaline, satisfaction and freedom with every piece i paint on the walls whether it turns out good or bad.

And finally, anything you want to say?

A medida que avanzo hacia murales que expresan mi identidad espiritual y mi libertad a través de colores, formas y recreaciones mitológicas, siempre me sentiré arraigado al graffiti y a las personas que me han acompañado a lo largo de mi trayectoria. ¡Un saludo a mis crews, RSCLS, JNC, BFD, 4PM y a mis amigos de todo el mundo!.

As i move on to more murals expressing my spiritual identity and freedom by colours, forms and recreating mythologies, i will always feel rooted to graffiti and the people that has been there throughout my journey. Shout out to my crews, RSCLS, JNC, BFD, 4PM  and the homies around the world!.
