¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

El nombre viene de no hacerlo muy bien en la clase de inglés del instituto. Veía mucho la palabra «revise» escrita en mis trabajos y pensé que era un nombre guay. Largo, pero guay.

Name came from not doing great in high school English class. I would see the word “revise” written a lot on my papers and I thought it was a cool name. Long, but cool. 

 

 

 

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting? 

Creo que el hecho de haber estado rodeado de graffiti mientras crecía yendo en metro y viviendo en la ciudad cuando era joven me motivó. No me lo tomé en serio hasta el instituto, cuando me metí de lleno en el mundo del hip hop y vi que la cultura del graffiti era casi una subcultura dentro de otra subcultura y que no importaba la clase social, la raza, el idioma o la posición social. Era libre y divertido, y para mí lo sigue siendo hoy en día.

I think being surrounded by it growing up riding the subways and living in the city when I was young was motivator for sure. I didn’t take it seriously until high school when I really got into the whole hip hop thing and seeing that the culture of graffiti was almost its own sub culture within a sub culture and it didn’t matter when it came to class, race, language, or any social standings. It was free and fun and it still is to this day for me. 

 

 

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Me gusta la libertad de hacer graffiti y literalmente hacer lo que quieras. Me ha ayudado a disciplinarme y a trasladar esa ética de trabajo a otras profesiones y aficiones. Hay que trabajar duro para hacerse notar. Hay tantos estilos, tantas personalidades y conexiones con personas locas de ideas afines. Ha sido un viaje que me ha llevado a viajar, a cobrar y a hacer amistades para toda la vida por el camino. ¿Lo peor? La política, la desconfianza, las mentiras, los defectos, la visión de túnel, la justicia propia y TODAS LAS PUTAS REGLAS PARA ALGO QUE NO DEBE TENER «REGLAS».

I like the freedom of doing graffiti and literally doing whatever you want to put out there. It’s been meaningful in a way that helped discipline me and having that work ethic translate to other professions and hobbies. You have to work hard to get noticed. There are so many style, so many personalities and connections with like minded crazy ass people. It’s been a journey that has led me to traveling, getting paid, and making life long friendships along the way. The worst part? The politics, distrust, lying, flakiness, tunnel vision, self righteousness and ALL THE FUCKING RULES FOR SOMETHING THAT ISNT SUPPOSED TO HAVE “RULES.”

Me parece bien. Todo el mundo ha enviado fotos a revistas antes de que existiera Internet. Todo forma parte del viaje.

I’m okay with it. Everyone has been submitting pictures to magazines before the internet. It’s all part of the journey. 

 

 

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Sí. Estaba muy mal la pieza y me detuvieron como al típico toyaco que empieza. Tenía como 15 o 16 años y pensé que un edificio estaba abandonado pero en realidad estaba esperando a que un negocio empezara a renovarlo. Se me ocurrió hacerme el listo y fingir que era una pared con permiso y alguien llamó inmediatamente y me detuvieron como a un idiota.

I do. It was very bad and I got arrested like a typical toy starting out would. I was like 15 or 16 and I thought a building was abandoned but really it was waiting for a business to start renovating. I thought I’d be clever and pretend it was a chill permission wall and someone called in immediately and I got nabbed like an idiot.

Creo que el graffiti es una locura hoy en día. Hay tantas opiniones, tantos guardianes y reglas que la gente literalmente se inventa. Todo el mundo se cree más importante y que ha contribuido más de lo que realmente ha hecho. Es un juego extraño en el que todo el mundo cree que la fama es el nombre del juego y que no existen los errores ni los accidentes. Por mucho que el oficio haya avanzado en su enfoque, herramientas e incluso pintura, las actitudes, los prejuicios y la idiotez general siguen estando presentes en muchos cabezas huecas, por desgracia. Aun así, es una de las cosas más divertidas que puedes hacer y, si te lo permites, puede cambiarte la vida para siempre.

I think graffiti is insane these days. So many opinions, so many gatekeepers and rules that people literally just make up. Everyone thinks they are way more important and have contributed more than they actually have. It’s a weird game where everyone thinks beef is the name of the game and that there’s no such thing as mistakes or accidents. As much as the craft has advanced in its approach, tools, and even paint, the attitudes and prejudices and general idiocy still remain with a lot of knuckleheads unfortunately. Still, it’s one of the funnest things you’ll do and it really can change your life for good if you let it.
