Ran

My nickname comes from taking my surname written in Japanese, ライチェンズテイン, and removing all the letters in the middle, leaving only the first and last letters: ラン (Ran).

Mi apodo viene de Tomar mi apellido escrito en japones ライチェンズテイン y quitarle todas las letras del medio, dejando solo la primera y la ultima: ラン (Ran).

  

 

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Disfruto de pintar paredes desde la primera vez que tuve un crayón en la mano cuando tenía un año y medio de edad, desde entonces no paré… oficialmente empecé a pintar graffiti a los 14, que pinté mi primer pieza con aerosol, desde entonces hice mucho vandal hasta que me di cuenta que disfrutaba más de pintar las cosas con tiempo y sin correr de la policía así que decidí enfocarme en el muralismo. 

I have enjoyed painting walls since the first time I held a pen in my hand when I was a year and a half old, and I haven’t stopped since. I officially started painting graffiti at age 14, when I painted my first piece with spray paint. From then on, I did a lot of vandalism until I realized that I enjoyed painting things more when I had time and wasn’t running from the police, so I decided to focus on muralism.

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del street art y lo que menos?

What do you like most about street art and what do you like least?

A parte de pintarlo yo mismo, lo que más me gusta del graffiti es la democratización del arte, murales que al estar en la via publica impactan vecinos y cambian barrios, sin estar restringidos al interior de una galería que cobra entrada.
También me gusta la comunidad internacional que se arma, ir a pintar a eventos en distintos países y conocer gente y artistas increíbles.
Lo que menos me gusta del graffiti son las peleas o diferencias que se generan por gente que le interesa mas sentirse gangsters que pintar o desarrollar su estilo…. y la policía persiguiendo muralistas mientras dejan que se escapen criminales de verdad. 

Apart from painting it myself, what I like most about graffiti is the democratization of art, murals that, being in public spaces, impact neighbors and change neighborhoods, without being restricted to the interior of a gallery that charges admission.
I also like the international community that forms, going to paint at events in different countries and meeting incredible people and artists.
What I like least about graffiti are the fights or differences that arise between people who are more interested in feeling like gangsters than painting or developing their style… and the police chasing muralists while letting real criminals get away.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Si recuerdo mi primera pieza, le compré aerosoles con descuento a un colega más grande que los había robado de un supermercado y me llevó a pintar una persiana en nuestro barrio… solo dos colores, chiquita y bastante fea, pero no solté el aerosol desde entonces, ya pasaron 21 años. 

If I recall my first piece, I purchased discounted spray paint from an older colleague who had stolen it from a supermarket, and he took me to paint a shutter in our neighborhood… just two colors, small and quite unattractive, but I haven’t put down the spray can since then, and it’s been 21 years.

 

Y para terminar ¿algo que quieras decir?

También soy Ingeniero Químico, pero dejé todo para dedicarme 100% al arte. Es un camino aún más difícil que la ingeniería pero me hace muy feliz, incluso en los peores momentos.

I am also a chemical engineer, but I gave it all up to devote myself 100% to art. It is an even more difficult path than engineering, but it makes me very happy, even in the worst moments.
