MrKas

My pseudonym MrKas comes from my early graffiti years. The name Kas originates from an old game room in Porto called Kastalia, a place where my friends and I used to meet every day. Over time, the tag “Kas” became part of my identity as an artist, and adding “Mr” later helped distinguish my work while keeping the roots of where everything began.

Mi seudónimo MrKas proviene de mis primeros años como writer de graffiti. El nombre Kas tiene su origen en una antigua sala de juegos de Oporto llamada Kastalia, un lugar donde mis amigos y yo solíamos reunirnos todos los días. Con el tiempo, la firma «Kas» se convirtió en parte de mi identidad como artista, y añadir «Mr» más tarde me ayudó a distinguir mi trabajo sin perder las raíces de donde todo comenzó.

 

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Mi primera motivación fue la pura curiosidad y la energía de la calle. Empecé a dibujar y pintar cuando tenía unos seis años, influenciado por mi padre, que fomentó mi lado creativo desde muy temprana edad.
Más tarde, en 1999, todo cambió cuando encontré un bote de spray negro en el suelo y empecé a pintar graffitis de camino a casa. Al día siguiente, le conté la historia a un amigo y él me prestó el libro Subway Art, de Martha Cooper. A partir de ese momento, solo quería escribir «Kas» por todas partes.

Crecí rodeado de graffitis, cultura hip-hop y la sensación de libertad que me proporcionaba pintar paredes con mis amigos. Con el tiempo, el arte se convirtió en una forma de expresarme, de explorar formas, movimientos, recuerdos y personas.

Hoy en día, lo que me motiva es la posibilidad de crear algo significativo para las comunidades y dejar historias de forma permanente en las paredes.

My first motivation was pure curiosity and the energy of the street. I began drawing and painting when I was about six years old, influenced by my father, who encouraged my creative side from an early age.
Later, in 1999, everything changed when I found a black spray can on the ground and started tagging all the way home. The next day, I told the story to a friend, and he lent me the book Subway Art by Martha Cooper. From that moment on, I just wanted to write Kas everywhere.

I grew up surrounded by graffiti, hip-hop culture, and the feeling of freedom that came with painting walls with my friends. Over time, art became a way to express myself, to explore shapes, movement, memories, and people.

Today, what motivates me is the possibility of creating something meaningful for communities and leaving stories permanently on walls.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del arte urbano y lo que menos?

What do you like most about street art and what do you like least?

Lo que más me gusta es la libertad, sin reglas, sin límites, solo creación y expresión. El graffiti me enseñó disciplina, valentía y cómo traducir el movimiento en forma.

Lo que menos me gusta es lo rápido que desaparecen algunas obras, ya sea porque las borran o las pintan encima. Pero incluso eso forma parte de la cultura: nada es eterno y las calles siempre están evolucionando.

What I like most is the freedom , no rules, no limits, just creation and expression. Graffiti taught me discipline, courage, and how to translate movement into form.

What I like least is how quickly some pieces disappear, either because they get buffed or painted over. But even that is part of the culture: nothing is eternal, and the streets are always evolving.

Es un honor. El Rincón de las Boquillas lleva muchos años documentando la cultura del graffiti, y formar parte de ese archivo significa unirme a una historia que me inspiró cuando era más joven. Respeto las plataformas que mantienen viva la esencia del graffiti y arte urbano, así que estoy feliz de compartir mi trabajo y mi historia contigo.

It’s an honor. El Rincón de las Boquillas has documented graffiti culture for many years, and being part of that archive means joining a history that inspired me when I was younger. I respect platforms that keep the essence of graffiti and street art alive, so I’m happy to share my work and my story with you.

 

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Sí, por supuesto.

Mi primera obra la realicé alrededor de 1999 en mi barrio. No era buena en términos técnicos, pero la sensación fue increíble: adrenalina, miedo, emoción y la sensación de haber descubierto algo que permanecería conmigo para siempre.

Mi estilo ha cambiado mucho desde entonces. Hoy en día deconstruyo imágenes, juego con ilusiones 3D, formas abstractas y efectos anamórficos, pero el espíritu de aquella primera noche sigue presente cada vez que pinto. La diferencia ahora es que mi trabajo transmite historias de personas y comunidades reales.

Yes, absolutely.

My first piece was done around 1999 in my neighborhood. It wasn’t good in terms of technique, but the feeling was incredible adrenaline, fear, excitement, and the sense that I had discovered something that would stay with me forever.

My style has changed a lot since then. Today I deconstruct images, play with 3D illusions, abstract shapes, and anamorphic effects, but the spirit of that first night is still present every time I paint. The difference now is that my work carries stories of real people and communities.

El graffiti me abrió un camino y el muralismo me dio un propósito. El graffiti también me permitió pintar en más de 40 países y vivir experiencias increíbles que nunca hubiera imaginado. Hay personas que nacen y mueren sin descubrir nunca lo que realmente aman, y yo me siento privilegiado y profundamente agradecido por haber encontrado mi pasión y por poder viajar por el mundo gracias a ella. Estoy agradecido de seguir pintando después de tantos años, conectando con personas y lugares de todo el mundo.

Graffiti gave me a path, and muralism gave me a purpose. Graffiti also allowed me to paint in more than 40 countries and to live incredible experiences that I could never have imagined. There are people who are born and die without ever discovering what they truly love, and I feel privileged and deeply grateful to have found my passion, and to travel the world because of it. I’m grateful to still be painting after so many years, connecting with people and places around the world.
