¿De dónde viene tu apodo?
Where does your pseudonym come from?
Pues cuando quiero quedar bien digo que el nombre es de un personaje del libro “La Rayuela” de Julio Cortázar. Pero lo cierto es que todo surgió de una broma de mis amigas, y entonces todo el mundo empezó a llamarme Maga. Había gente que me preguntaba si el nombre era por el libro de Cortázar (pero no me lo había leído, a raíz de esto lo intenté.) Al final me acabó gustando el nombre, por el significado relacionado con la magia, así que me sentí cómoda con el apodo y lo adopté de nombre artístico.
Well, when I want to look good I say that the name comes from a character in the book «La Rayuela» by Julio Cortázar. But the truth is that it all came out of a joke with my friends, and then everyone started calling me Maga. There were people who asked me if the name came from Cortázar’s book (but I hadn’t read it, so I tried to.) In the end I ended up liking the name, because of the meaning related to magic, so I felt comfortable with the nickname and adopted it as my stage name.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Yo he dibujado y pintado desde que tengo consciencia, mi familia y mis profesores me recuerdan siempre pintando de pequeña. Ahora, mi incursión en el arte urbano vino cuando estaba acabando la carrera de Bellas Artes y solía ir bastante a L’Hastilla, un centro social autogestionado de l’Hospitalet de Llobregat. Unos amigos que estaban implicados en el proyecto me dijeron de pintar alguna de las paredes. Así que un día me animé y pinté un mural a brocha en la sala de conciertos, que duró unos años. Después pinté alguno más también. Entonces uno de los días que se había organizado una exposición allí en la que yo participaba, me encontré con unos chicos pintando en el pasillo (Eslic, Kronos y Axel) y ellos me invitaron a una Jam. A partir de ahí fui conociendo a más gente, me enganchó la idea de hacer quedadas para pintar, ya que siempre lo había hecho sola. Al cabo de un par de años de pintar a brocha, en uno de los eventos me dieron sprays y no tenia ni idea como usarlos, pero me picó la curiosidad. Así que me iba con gente a pintar por diversión y me iban enseñando como usarlo, y me motivaba ver como mejoraba. A día de hoy suelo pintar más a spray, pero combino técnicas según necesite.
I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember, my family and my teachers always remember me painting as a child. Now, my foray into urban art came when I was finishing my degree in Fine Arts and I used to go to L’Hastilla, a self-managed social centre in l’Hospitalet de Llobregat. Some friends who were involved in the project told me to paint some of the walls. So one day I took the plunge and painted a mural with a brush in the concert hall, which lasted a few years. Later I painted some more too. Then one of the days they had organised an exhibition there in which I was participating, I came across some guys painting in the corridor (Eslic, Kronos and Axel) and they invited me to a jam. From then on I got to know more people, I got hooked on the idea of getting together to paint, as I had always done it alone. After a couple of years of brush painting, at one of the events I was given sprays and I had no idea how to use them, but I was curious. So I would go with people to paint for fun and they would show me how to use it, and it motivated me to see how I improved. Nowadays I tend to spray paint more, but I combine techniques as I need to.
¿Cuál es tu estilo?
What is your style?
Mi estilo se basa en la ilustración, cercana al comic, y suelo representar personajes. La temática suele variar según lo que esté pasando en mi vida o en la sociedad, así que no me cierro a un tema. Me gusta combinar fantasía y naturaleza. Bebo de toda clase de influencias, pero sobretodo de la ilustración, del comic europeo (mi padre tenia revistas donde salía Moebius, Milo Manara, etc.), el arte, la mitología, el cine, el arte urbano…
My style is based on illustration, close to comics, and I usually represent characters. The subject matter tends to vary according to what is happening in my life or in society, so I don’t close myself to one theme. I like to combine fantasy and nature. I draw from all kinds of influences, but above all from illustration, European comics (my father had magazines with Moebius, Milo Manara, etc.), art, mythology, cinema, urban art…

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?
Do you remember the first piece?
El primer mural a brocha que hice fue en mi habitación, me copié una serpiente de tatuaje japonés. Pero lo que dio pie a que yo siga pintando hoy día, fue el que pinté en el CSO L’Hastilla en la sala de conciertos. Representé a una mujer negra desnuda, que su cabello afro y su vello púbico eran plantas y estaba cubierto de hojas. Encima de la mujer había el típico pergamino de tatuaje Old School y decía “Welcome to the jungle”, de la canción de los Guns’n’Roses.
Después, lo primero que pinté a spray fue en un evento en Barcelona, que muchos artistas interveníamos en las persianas del Mercat de l’Abaceria, del barrio de Gracia. Yo fui con pintura plástica y enseguida me di cuenta que no podía pintar con eso, así que me tocó usar los sprays que me habían dado, a pesar que no tenía ni idea. Por suerte otros artistas me ayudaron aconsejándome. Pinté a spray lo más grueso y después el delineado lo hice soltando pintura en el tapón y con disolvente para que no se secara, y lo hice a pincel.
The first brush mural I did was in my room, I copied a Japanese tattoo snake. But what led me to continue painting today was the one I painted at the CSO L’Hastilla in the concert hall. I depicted a naked black woman, whose afro hair and pubic hair were plants and covered with leaves. Above the woman was the typical Old School tattoo scroll and it said «Welcome to the jungle», from the Guns’n’Roses song.
Later, the first thing I spray-painted was at an event in Barcelona, where many of us artists intervened on the shutters of the Mercat de l’Abaceria, in the Gracia neighbourhood. I went with plastic paint and immediately realised that I couldn’t paint with it, so I had to use the sprays they had given me, even though I didn’t have a clue. Luckily other artists helped me by giving me advice. I spray-painted the thickest part and then I did the outlining by releasing the paint in the cap and with solvent so that it wouldn’t dry, and I did it with a brush.
