I’ve loved drawing everywhere since I was a kid — on paper, notebooks, desks, and any surface I could find. In high school, I started tagging my school, my crew name, and my own name using spray paint and markers on walls, buses, and random spots in the city. Later, I studied Visual and Communication Design, and that’s where I really started to understand graffiti and street art culture.
I was never only interested in letters; I wanted to create a character — something iconic. For me, it feels like tagging, but in visual form. A character can speak louder than words.

Desde niño me ha encantado dibujar en cualquier sitio: en papel, cuadernos, escritorios y cualquier superficie que encontrara. En el instituto, empecé a pintar mi nombre, el de mi crew y mi apodo con spray y rotuladores en paredes, autobuses y cualquier lugar de la ciudad. Más tarde, estudié Diseño Visual y Comunicación, y fue entonces cuando realmente empecé a comprender la cultura del graffiti y el arte urbano.

Nunca me interesaron solo las letras; quería crear un personaje, algo icónico. Para mí, es como pintar graffitis, pero en forma visual. Un personaje puede decir más que las palabras.

 

¿De donde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

Darbotz es mi apodo desde la secundaria. En realidad, es el nombre de mi profesor. Mi otro seudónimo, «Mons», es la abreviatura de «monstruo». Desde niño siempre me han obsesionado los monstruos, especialmente personajes como Godzilla y King Kong. Me sentía conectado con esas criaturas: poderosas, incomprendidas y llenas de energía bruta. Ese sentimiento se convirtió poco a poco en parte de mi identidad, y el nombre se me quedó grabado de forma natural con el paso del tiempo.

Darbotz is my nickname since high school. It’s actually my teacher’s name. while my other pseudonym Mons” is short for monster. I’ve always been obsessed with monsters since I was a kid, especially characters like Godzilla and King Kong. I felt connected to those creatures — powerful, misunderstood, and full of raw energy. That feeling slowly became part of my identity, and the name just stuck with me naturally over time.

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del arte urbano y lo que menos?

What do you like most about street art and what do you like least? 

Lo que más me gusta es la sensación de libertad y la adrenalina. Es la emoción de crear algo en tiempo real, en espacios reales. También me encantan las conexiones globales: conocer a artistas de diferentes países, compartir paredes, viajar e intercambiar energía a través del arte.

Lo que menos me gusta son las peleas y los dramas innecesarios. A veces, los egos y los conflictos desvían la atención del verdadero espíritu del graffiti y arte urbano, que debería ser la expresión, el respeto y el movimiento.

What I love the most is the feeling of freedom and the adrenaline rush. It’s the thrill of creating something in real time, in real spaces. I also love the global connections — meeting artists from different countries, sharing walls, traveling, and exchanging energy through art.
What I like the least is the unnecessary beef and drama. Sometimes egos and conflicts take attention away from the real spirit of graffiti and street art, which should be about expression, respect, and movement.

Creo que es una oportunidad muy interesante. Las plataformas de este tipo ayudan a ampliar las conexiones en todo el mundo y a unir diferentes escenas. Siempre me entusiasma compartir mi trabajo con nuevos públicos y formar parte de conversaciones que impulsan la cultura del graffiti y arte urbano a nivel internacional.

I think it’s a very interesting opportunity. Platforms like that help expand connections across the globe and connect different scenes together. I’m always excited about sharing my work with new audiences and being part of conversations that push graffiti and street art culture forward internationally.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Sí, lo recuerdo muy claramente. Mi primera obra con personajes fue en Bandung, Indonesia, alrededor de 2004. En aquella época, el graffiti era todavía algo muy nuevo en Indonesia: la escena acababa de empezar y crecía lentamente. Utilicé métodos básicos: rellenar la forma con pintura y utilizar líneas de spray para definir el personaje.
Mirando atrás, mi estilo ha evolucionado mucho. En aquel entonces, era más crudo, nervioso y experimental. Hoy en día, mi trabajo se siente más controlado, conceptual y con un significado más profundo. Pero la sensación al pintar —la emoción, la concentración, los latidos del corazón— sigue siendo la misma. Cada vez que me pongo delante de una pared, siento como si volviera a casa.

Yes, I remember it very clearly. My first real character piece was in Bandung, Indonesia, around 2004. At that time, graffiti was still something very new in Indonesia — the scene was just starting and slowly growing. I used basic methods: filling the shape with paint and using spray lines to define the character.
Looking back, my style has evolved a lot. Back then, it was more raw, nervous, and experimental. Today, my work feels more controlled, conceptual, and deeper in meaning. But the feeling when painting — the excitement, the focus, the heartbeat — is still the same. It feels like coming home every time I stand in front of a wall.

Sal al aire libre, pinta más, explora más y crea conexiones reales. No esperes a que te den permiso: crea tus propias oportunidades. Haz lo que te gusta, sé fiel a tu trabajo y sigue avanzando.
