Where does your pseudonym come from?
De la combinación de cuatro letras. Busqué cuatro letras que me gustaran y fueran armónicas. No tiene otro sentido.
From the combination of four letters. I looked for four letters that I liked and that were harmonious. It has no other meaning.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Tenía 14 años y vino un chico nuevo de la sierra a mi colegio. El firmaba una especie de letra china que decía que ponía SHAT… Claramente influenciado por los DN, joke, lama y Sha. (La firma en un círculo de Sha, me sigue pareciendo de las mejores que existen) . Empecé para demostrar que eso de pintar por ahí era una gilipollez y que yo también podía hacerlo. Lo sigo pensando, pero me enganché y no he podido dejarlo desde entonces.
Nos inventábamos firmas y pintábamos con las tizas, rollo “el Barto”. Entonces me empecé a fijar en lo que veía por mi zona. Había un grupo del que se ha hablado muy poco, que para mí fue una gran influencia. Los EAX, Deto, Pen, Emi… Flipaba con unos platas que habían hecho por ahí. Desde el autobús 105 veía firmas y piezas de los los FMC, el bat… En la línea 5 de metro , Canillejas – Aluche veía cosas del tala, Menace, Rebel 86, también veía firmas de flecheros Mamen o Mamey…Los cristales del metro. Me lo gozaba bastante.
Me motivó lo prohibido, lo secreto, la doble vida…. El anonimato y la fama al mismo tiempo.
Me engancho, lo terapéutico del grafiti, la sensación de pintar y olvidarte del resto del mundo. Los problemas pasan a un segundo plano. En momentos chungos el graffiti siempre ha estado ahí para retarme a probar nuevas formas en las letras.
I was 14 years old when a new boy from the mountains came to my school. He tagged his name with a kind of Chinese letter that said SHAT… Clearly influenced by DN, joke, lama and Sha. (The tag in a circle of Sha still seems to me to be one of the best there is). I started to show that painting graffiti was stupid and that I could do it too. I still think so, but I got hooked and haven’t been able to stop since.
We made up tags and painted with chalk, like ‘el Barto’. Then I started to notice what I saw in my area. There was a group that has been talked about very little, but which was a big influence on me. The EAX, Deto, Pen, Emi… I was blown away by some of the silver they had done around there. From the 105 bus, I saw tags and pieces by the FMC, the bat… On the number 5 metro line, Canillejas – Aluche, I saw pieces by Tala, Menace, Rebel 86, I also saw tags by Flecheros Mamen or Mamey… The subway windows. I really enjoyed it.
I was motivated by the forbidden, the secret, the double life… Anonymity and fame at the same time.
I got hooked on the therapeutic aspect of graffiti, the feeling of painting and forgetting about the rest of the world. Problems fade into the background. In tough times, graffiti has always been there to challenge me to try new forms of lettering.

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?
Lo que más me gusta es la competición con uno mismo. Un juego por retorcer o estirar las letras y los colores, siempre intentando una nueva conexión o un nuevo retruécano.
Lo que menos, los chichis, la masificación. Gente que ha empezado ahora y no conocen los códigos. Se creen que por bombardear y estar en todas partes ya ganan en el juego. Pero si eres un toy, estando en todas partes, todo el mundo ve que hay un TOY en todas partes…
Tampoco me parece bien la persecución y las multas por parte del Ayuntamiento. Aquí en Madrid se están talando un montón de arboles y siguen borrando con gris la M-30… Si quieren la solución al Graffiti, desde aquí se la regalo: Naturaleza.
What I like most is competing with myself. A game of twisting or stretching letters and colours, always trying to find a new connection or a new pun.
What I like least is the fuss, the overcrowding. People who have just started and don’t know the codes. They think that by bombarding and being everywhere they win the game. But if you’re a toy, being everywhere means that everyone sees that there’s a TOY everywhere…
I also don’t agree with the persecution and fines imposed by the City Council. Here in Madrid, they’re cutting down a lot of trees and continuing to paint over the M-30 with grey… If they want a solution to graffiti, here’s one for free: nature.

No me gusta nada. No me fio. Está la cosa muy fea con la patrulla canina en Madrid. Hacen investigaciones y encaloman a todo quiski. Quien me dice a mí que no sois policía encubierta, la base de datos, el archivo… En realidad, me da igual, no tenéis nada contra mí. Lo que hago ahora es graffiti amable.
Siempre he preferido mantener un perfil bajo y que fueran mis piezas las que hablaran por mí. Pero ya estoy mayor y estoy enganchado a la fama de internet, voy a dejar de pintar y hacerme las piezas con IA. En la realidad virtual quedan spots que no están quemados.
Si esta entrevista sirve para que algún chaval que empieza se dé cuenta de que lo importante son las letras y el estilo, me doy por satisfecho.
I don’t like it at all. I don’t trust it. Things are really bad with the dog patrol in Madrid. They investigate and harass everyone. Who’s to say you’re not undercover police, with your database, your files… Actually, I don’t care, you’ve got nothing on me. What I do now is friendly graffiti.
I’ve always preferred to keep a low profile and let my pieces speak for me. But I’m getting older and I’m hooked on internet fame, so I’m going to stop painting and make my pieces with AI. In virtual reality, there are still spots that aren’t burned out.
If this interview helps some kid who’s just starting out realise that what’s important is the letters and the style, I’ll be satisfied.

Por supuesto. Fue una pedrada importante en 1997. Un “Zaex” (atiende que firmaza) en plata, con borde churretoso, no recuerdo si en morado oscuro o blanco y unos brillos. Proporciones imposibles, mas pequeño de la cuenta. En la parte de atrás de mi colegio.
Me sirvió para darme cuenta de que tenía que trabajar más en los bocetos y de que los sprays eran otra movida completamente distinta al papel.
Me encanta seguir pintando ahora, aunque por circunstancias no pueda hacerlo todo lo que me gustaría.
He pintado y pinto con mucha de la gente que admiraba al empezar, algunos de ellos incluso puedo decir que son colegas. Poyas viejas o señores mayores, con la misma energía, el doble de estilo.
Of course. It was a big hit in 1997. A ‘Zaex’ (check out that tags) in silver, with a smudged border, I can’t remember if it was dark purple or white with some sparkles. Impossible proportions, smaller than it should have been. On the back of my school.
It helped me realise that I had to work harder on my sketches and that sprays were a completely different thing from paper.
I love to keep painting now, even though circumstances prevent me from doing it as much as I would like.
I have painted and continue to paint with many of the people I admired when I started out, some of whom I can even call friends. Old girls or old men, with the same energy, twice the style.
