Babu
I’ve got two tags — BABU and ENTER. It’s been so long that I kinda forgot where BABU came from, but I remember BABU was actually my old Warcraft III username back in junior high. Around that time, I started getting into graffiti, so it just naturally became my tag.
ENTER came much later. The thing is, BABU has two B’s, and that sometimes drives me crazy when sketching. I often play music while practicing and just write random words that pop up on my screen. One day, I saw the word “ENTER,” started writing it, and it just flowed. The structure felt good, so I stuck with it. But honestly, all my friends still call me BABU.
Tengo dos apodos: BABU y ENTER. Ha pasado tanto tiempo que casi he olvidado de dónde viene BABU, pero recuerdo que BABU era mi antiguo nombre de usuario en Warcraft III cuando estaba en el instituto. Por aquella época, empecé a interesarme por el graffiti, así que se convirtió naturalmente en mi apodo.
ENTER llegó mucho más tarde. El caso es que BABU tiene dos B, y eso a veces me vuelve loco cuando dibujo. A menudo pongo música mientras practico y escribo palabras aleatorias que aparecen en mi pantalla. Un día vi la palabra «ENTER», empecé a escribirla y me salió con facilidad. La estructura me gustó, así que la mantuve. Pero, sinceramente, todos mis amigos siguen llamándome BABU.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
A mi padre también le gustaba dibujar. Cuando era niño, solía sentarse conmigo y con mi hermano a dibujar juntos personajes de anime. En el instituto, tenía un compañero de clase al que también le gustaba Naruto. Compartíamos la misma hoja de papel: yo dibujaba a Naruto y él dibujaba a Sasuke. Supongo que esa fue mi primera colaboración artística.
Más tarde, me interesé por la cultura hip-hop, y cuando vi graffitis en vídeos musicales, me sentí completamente atraído por ellos. Creo firmemente que para cualquiera a quien le guste dibujar, una vez que se adentra en el hip-hop, enamorarse del graffiti y empezar a pintar es una progresión natural.
My dad liked drawing too. When I was a kid, he used to sit with me and my brother and draw anime characters together. In junior high, I had a classmate who was also into Naruto. We’d share the same sheet of paper — I’d draw Naruto, he’d draw Sasuke. I guess that was my first kind of collab piece?
Later in high school, I got into hip-hop culture, and when I saw graffiti in music videos, I was totally drawn to it. I really believe that for anyone who likes to draw, once you get into hip-hop, falling in love with graffiti and starting to paint just comes naturally.

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?
Hay muchas cosas que me encantan del graffiti. Además de la satisfacción de pintar o decorar una pared con unos amigos, disfruto mucho con todo lo que lo rodea: los lugares, la gente, las historias aleatorias. Como cuando salgo a buscar un sitio para pegar pegatinas o firmar con mi tag y me tropiezo con un viejo cartel descolorido de hace 30 años en una pared de hormigón olvidada. O esos pequeños parques a los que nadie presta atención, donde un anciano crea arte a partir de basura. O explorar edificios abandonados: recientemente pinté en una escuela abandonada que resultó ser un lugar secreto de reunión para chicos gays. ¿Te lo imaginas? Estábamos pintando mientras un grupo de ellos pasaba por allí, mirándonos con curiosidad.
Gracias al graffiti, he conocido a gente de todo el mundo e incluso he viajado al extranjero para asistir a eventos, nada de eso habría sucedido sin la pintura.
En cuanto a lo que menos me gusta… mmm, es difícil de decir. Quizás cuando calculo mal el espacio y la última letra queda apretada, sin espacio para estirarla. Eso realmente me deprime.
There’s a lot I love about graffiti. Besides the satisfaction of painting itself or pulling off a crazy wall with a few friends, I really enjoy everything that comes with it — the places, the people, the random stories. Like when I’m out looking for a spot to slap stickers or sign my tag, and I stumble on an old faded poster from 30 years ago on some forgotten concrete wall. Or those tiny parks no one pays attention to, where some old guy builds art out of trash. Or exploring abandoned buildings — I recently painted at an abandoned school that turned out to be a secret hangout spot for gay guys. Can you imagine? We were painting while a bunch of them kept walking by, curiously checking us out.
Because of graffiti, I’ve met people from all over the world and even traveled abroad for events — none of that would’ve happened without painting.
As for what I like the least… hmm, it’s hard to say. Maybe when I misjudge the space and the last letter gets squeezed — no room to stretch it out. That really gets me down.

Do you remember the first piece?
Mi primera obra fue con algunos compañeros de clase cerca de nuestro piso alquilado en la universidad. Encontramos una pared abandonada y utilizamos pintura barata de ferretería, incluso el amarillo más débil que puedas imaginar. Los ladrillos rojos húmedos estaban cubiertos de musgo y la pintura desapareció cuando la rociamos. Pasamos una eternidad rellenándola y aún así seguía pareciendo una mierda.
Pero yo estaba muy nervioso y emocionado, pensando: «¡Joder, por fin he salido del papel y me he subido a la pared! ¡Sí, tío, ahora soy un writer de verdad!».
Ahora mis habilidades son mucho más sólidas, pero esa emoción pura de aquellos primeros días ya no es tan fuerte.
My first piece was with some classmates near our rental place in college. We found an abandoned wall and used cheap hardware store paint — even the weakest yellow you can imagine. The damp red bricks were covered in moss, and the paint just vanished when we sprayed it. We spent forever filling it, and it still looked like crap.
But I was so nervous and excited — like, “Damn, I finally stepped off the paper and onto the wall! Hell Yooooo, I’m a real graffiti writer now!”
Now my skills are much more solid, but that raw excitement from those early days isn’t as strong anymore.
