Rusto

At first, I was writing «Routine,» but since I was mostly doing illegal stuff, 7 letters were just too much. I shortened it to «Routs» for a while, until one day I was doodling and realized the letters could make «Rusto.» That’s the abbreviation for the colors used by the old school in NYC, Rustoleum. And since I was already a fan of that New York vibe, I had no doubt!.

Al principio, escribía «Routine», pero como hacía principalmente cosas ilegales, siete letras eran demasiadas. Lo acorté a «Routs» durante un tiempo, hasta que un día, mientras garabateaba, me di cuenta de que las letras podían formar «Rusto». Esa es la abreviatura de los colores que utilizaba la vieja escuela de Nueva York, Rustoleum. Y como ya era fan del ambiente neoyorquino, ¡no lo dudé ni un segundo!.

What motivated you to get started painting?

La razón principal por la que empecé a escribir fue esa sensación de rebeldía y libertad que transmite el graffiti.

The main reason I started writing was that feeling of rebellion and freedom that graffiti gives off. 

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Lo que más me gusta del graffiti es ese momento en el que estoy pintando y la energía que me transmite. Estar en lugares alocados a los que la gente normal no iría, mientras hago arte, es una sensación increíble.

¿Lo que menos me gusta? Todos los dramáticos que no saben manejar la frustración y acaban causando caos. Quédate en casa, estudia y mejorarás; si no, ¡búscate otra cosa que hacer!.

What I love most about graffiti is that moment when I’m painting and the vibe it gives me. Being in crazy spots that regular folks wouldn’t go to, while making art, is such a dope feeling.

What I like least? All the drama queens who can’t handle frustration and end up causing chaos. Stay home, study up, and you’ll get better; otherwise, find something else to do!.

Do you remember the first piece?

Mi primera obra fue en 1995, en la pared trasera de un hospital psiquiátrico. ¡Un lugar muy apropiado, diría yo, para la patología que se estaba desarrollando en mí! Bromas aparte, aquellos eran buenos tiempos, estaba con un amigo mío, mi familia estaba viva y yo era feliz.

My first piece was in 1995, on the back wall of a psychiatric hospital. A fitting place, I’d say, for the pathology that was developing in me! Jokes aside, those were good times, I was with a friend of mine, my family was alive, and I was happy.
