I had seen tags and graffiti in my neighborhood, Pardinyes, in Lerida, and I started tagging the walls near my house with the tag “crash” for about three months or so. I met other writers from my neighborhood and neighboring neighborhoods (such as Owe, As, Psta, Cruel, Jam, and a few others), and I found out that Crash was a great graffiti writer from New York. Then I changed my name to Fil, which I used to paint my first piece, although I had already painted a joint piece with my first crew, Radical People (RP).

Había visto tags y graffitis en mi barrio Pardinyes en Lerida y empecé a taquear las paredes de cerca de mi casa con el tag de “crash” unos 3 meses mas o menos y conocí a otros escritores de mi barrio y de barrios de al lado (como Owe, As, Psta, Cruel, Jam y unos cuantos mas.) y me entere y de que Crash era un gran escritor de graffiti de NY. Entonces cambie al nombre de Fil con el que pinté mi primera pieza aunque que ya había pintado una pieza conjunta con mi primera crew Radical People (RP).

  

¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

Viene porque en esa época me gustaba mucho el grupo Génesis, Phil Collins y el nombre de Phil me gustó, pero quería un nombre en catalán mi lengua materna, entonces elegí Fil que es como suena y también en catalán es hilo, me gustó como definición del estilo que más me gusta que es el graffiti el wild style como un hilo (fil) porque las letras se entrelazan y se lían.

It comes from the fact that at that time I really liked the band Genesis, Phil Collins, and I liked the name Phil, but I wanted a name in Catalan, my mother language, so I chose Fil, which is how it sounds and also means thread in Catalan. I liked it as a definition of the style I like best, which is wild style graffiti, like a thread (fil) because the letters intertwine and get tangled up.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Lo que me gusta y me siento afortunado de vivir el graffiti como hermandad y grandes amistades, he gozado del amor de la gente del graffiti, queriendo lo que se hacía y quien lo hacía. Viajando por España, Europa y Ny, he visto el amor de la gente por la cultura del graffiti y en mi caso el amor por el hip hop como cultura.

Lo que menos las tonterías de egos, que todos tenemos algunos más otros menos, las envidias y las criticas a la gente que le va bien la vida en el graffiti. Menuda gilipollez!, mejor para ellos! Ole sus huevos se lo han currado o suerte que más da!, hay que estar allí para que se les vea.

What do you think about the idea of us publishing your artworks on our web «elrincondelasboquillas.com»?

Me parece Cojonudo! Que piensen en mí, porque aprecian el graffiti que hago o vean algo especial y el amor que ponemos los escritores de graffiti en ello, exprimiendo nuestro cerebro para mejorar detalles de nuestros estilos, ir evolucionando o haciendo metamorfosis del estilo. 

He visto grandes escritores en el «elrincondelasboquillas.com» algunos no los conocía y son gratas sorpresas!. Me tiene en vilo esperando a quien va a entrevistar en la próxima entrega, haces que un gran servicio a la comunidad del graffiti divulgando grandes escritores y sus estilos.

I think it’s awesome! That they think of me because they appreciate the graffiti I do or see something special and the love that graffiti writers put into it, racking our brains to improve details of our styles, evolving or transforming our style.

I’ve seen some great writers on “elrincondelasboquillas.com.” Some I didn’t know, and they’re pleasant surprises! I’m on tenterhooks waiting to see who you’ll interview in the next installment. You’re doing a great service to the graffiti community by promoting great writers and their styles.

 

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Como si fuera ayer. Fue en el 1990, en el muro del río Segre que pasa por Lleida en Pardinyes lo que es ahora el «Hall of fame» de la Ciudad era una pieza en relleno de azules claros y medios, con un trazado ancho de líneas bastante rectas siendo una primera pieza (ya nos entendemos) sin 3d ni sombra, sin brillos y las letras terminaban en una espiral rectangular, el proceso era excitante de amor y odio, cuando la termine fue un subidón estaba contentísimo todo estaba genial había que mejorar, pero todo era positivo. El cambio con lo que hago ahora son estilos contrapuestos, ahora pinto un estilo 3d tubular, letterings 3d, 3d trazado o pompas 3d. Hace un tiempo me propuse que cuando pintara Masterpieces irían acompañadas también de un carácter un mínimo del 80% de ellas. Pintar para mí es echar toda la carne al brasero, todo el conocimiento, mi estilo mis mierdas también. Terminar es un momento del éxtasis de ver la pieza terminada sea en un Hall of fame, o una pieza rápida sea donde sea. El sentimiento ha ido mejorando con los años, menos rayadas de como la he terminado o como ha quedado, más satisfecho del resultado y viendo todo lo que se puede mejorar, si no, no hay evolución y también más ganes de pintar, más yonqui del graffiti. 

As if it were yesterday. It was in 1990, on the wall of the Segre River that runs through Lleida in Pardinyes, what is now the city’s “Hall of Fame.” It was a piece filled with light and medium blues, with a wide outline of fairly straight lines, being a first piece (you know what I mean) without 3D or shadows, without glare, and the letters ended in a rectangular spiral. The process was exciting, a love-hate relationship. When I finished it, I was on a high, I was so happy, everything was great, there was room for improvement, but it was all positive. The change with what I do now is contrasting styles. Now I paint a tubular 3D style, 3D lettering, 3D outlines, or 3D bubbles. A while ago, I decided that when I painted masterpieces, at least 80% of them would also have a character. For me, painting is putting everything I have into it, all my knowledge, my style, and my crap too. Finishing is a moment of ecstasy, seeing the finished piece, whether it’s in a Hall of Fame or a quick piece wherever it may be. The feeling has improved over the years, less scratches about how I finished it or how it turned out, more satisfied with the result and seeing everything that can be improved, otherwise there is no evolution and also more desire to paint, more graffiti junkie.
