¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

El nombre “Kurtis” viene de una mezcla entre mi nombre real y 50 cent. De pequeño solía escucharlo mucho y mis colegas me acabaron llamando Kurtis. Después decidí escribir ese nombre y me gustó el resultado en papel y continué con él hasta el día de hoy. Recuerdo que en ese momento, año 2014-2015,firmaba como “Zone”, y lo usaba como un nombre secundario, pero poco a poco fue pillando más peso y paso a ser mi nombre definitivo. 

The name ‘Kurtis’ comes from a combination of my real name and 50 Cent. When I was little, I used to listen to him a lot, and my mates ended up calling me Kurtis. Then I decided to write that name down, liked how it looked on paper, and have stuck with it ever since. I remember that at that time, in 2014-2015, I tagged as ‘Zone’ and used it as a secondary name, but little by little it gained more weight and became my definitive name.

 

 

 

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Se juntaron varios factores. Fue un verano bastante mágico, ya que llegué al pueblo como cada verano y un amigo de Vallecas me enseñó unas piezas suyas y flipe. Después cuando volví de vacaciones, al “Doble”, colega mío desde que íbamos en pañales, le paso algo similar y empezamos a interesarnos bastante por la movida. Poco después, tuve la oportunidad mientras iba a clase de ver al “Mio” pintando un muro, y ya fue la chispa que prendió la mecha. Me flipo verle coger un spray crear algo de la nada.

Después de aquello, Honey, Doble y yo nos volcamos de lleno con el graffiti y empezamos a ir a exhibiciones, como la que se celebró en Gernika en el año 2009-2010. Al llegar allí con aquella ilusión y ver a la gente de La1314, BSH, NKR y demás, que nos acogieron como a uno más, creo que fue otro de los momentos en los que nos enamoramos del graffiti. Hoy en día es un sueño poder pintar con aquella gente que fueron nuestra inspiración desde bien pequeños.

Several factors came together. It was a rather magical summer, as I arrived in the village as I did every summer and a friend from Vallecas showed me some of his pieces and I was blown away. Then, when I came back from holiday, something similar happened to Doble, a mate of mine since we were in nappies, and we started to get really interested in the scene. Shortly afterwards, on my way to class, I had the chance to see my painting on a wall, and that was the spark that lit the fuse. It was amazing to see him pick up a spray can and create something out of nothing.

After that, Honey, Doble and I threw ourselves into graffiti and started going to exhibitions, such as the one held in Gernika in 2009-2010. When we got there, full of excitement, and saw the people from La1314, BSH, NKR and others, who welcomed us as one of their own, I think that was another moment when we fell in love with graffiti. Today, it’s a dream come true to be able to paint with those people who inspired us from a very young age.

 

 

 

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Lo que más me gusta del Graffiti es la calma que me transmite, cuando pinto me olvido de todo y es como estar fuera de toda la mierda. Además, gracias a pintar he conocido a personas que me llevo para siempre en el corazón, y eso no tiene precio. 

Por otro lado, lo que menos me gusta son los precios que se manejan hoy en día en el mercado de la pintura, cada vez hay que hacer más malabares con el sueldo para que sea accesible, y la cosa está complicada.Creo que se debería hacer aún más comunidad entre todos y apoyar más la movida, hacer más quedadas, más festis y apoyarnos más entre todos.

What I like most about graffiti is the calm it gives me. When I paint, I forget about everything and it’s like being away from all the crap. Also, thanks to painting, I’ve met people who will always be in my heart, and that’s priceless.

On the other hand, what I like least are the prices on the painting market today. You have to juggle your salary more and more to make it affordable, and things are complicated. I think we should build a stronger community and support the movement more, organise more meet-ups and parties, and support each other more.

Me hace mucha ilusión poder dejar un cachito de mi historia por aquí, una página que llevo siguiendo tiempo y que me encanta lo que hace. Es un placer tener un sitio donde conoces las historias de otros escritores y puedes ver sus piezas la verdad. Un verdadero placer la verdad.

I am thrilled to be able to leave a piece of my story here, on a website that I have been following for some time and whose work I love. It is a pleasure to have a place where you can learn about other writers’ stories and see their work. A real pleasure, truly.

 

 

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

La verdad que es algo que nunca se olvida. Tendría unos 10-11 años y eran navidades. Recuerdo que me pase todo el mes de diciembre pidiéndole a mi madre dos latas como regalo y ella me lo negaba, pero cuando llegó el día, ahí estaban, dos botes de ferretería, rojo y azul, esperándome. No tarde ni medio segundo en decirle para ir a probarlos, y allí fuimos, a una caseta de mala muerte a echar la primera piedra. Recuerdo que en cuanto apreté aquella válvula sentí que no pararía de apretar un spray en mi vida, y hasta día de hoy, ese deseo no ha cambiado ni creo que vaya a cambiar. Graffiti for Life.

The truth is that it’s something you never forget. I was about 10 or 11 years old, and it was Christmas. I remember spending the whole month of December asking my mother for two cans as a present, and she kept refusing, but when the day came, there they were, two red and blue hardware store cans waiting for me. It didn’t take me half a second to ask her to go and try them out, and off we went to a run-down shack to lay the first stone. I remember that as soon as I pressed that valve, I felt that I would never stop spraying in my life, and to this day, that desire has not changed, nor do I think it ever will. Para terminar , me gustaría decir que ha sido un verdadero placer compartir un cachito de mi con vosotros, y a la peña que está en el juego y que empieza, que no paréis de bocetear y pintar sin parar, que todo suma, y que esto no pare nunca gente, un abrazo a toda la peña del graffiti.
