As a kid growing up in the ninetees I was inspired by the local graffiti scene in Berlin and I started tagging and putting my name up. I wrote several different names but SNYDER was most challenging because it had 6 letters that had to be formed instead of the usual 3 to 4. It was quite unusual as a graffiti nickname back then and I liked the letter combination so it sticked to me.
De niño, en los años noventa, me inspiró la escena local del graffiti en Berlín y empecé a pintar graffitis y a poner mi nombre. Escribí varios nombres diferentes, pero SNYDER era el más difícil porque tenía seis letras que había que formar, en lugar de las tres o cuatro habituales. Era bastante inusual como apodo de graffiti en aquella época y me gustaba la combinación de letras, así que se me quedó grabado.
¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?
What motivated you to get started painting?
Naturalmente, mi misión pasó a ser alcanzar la fama, representar a mi pandilla, a los amigos de mi barrio, y desarrollar un buen estilo caligráfico. Siempre se trataba de competir y de disfrutar de los momentos gratificantes al fotografiar al día siguiente el trabajo realizado durante la noche.
Cuando empecé a centrarme profesionalmente en mi arte en 2018, pude aprovechar mi experiencia de tantos años trabajando con botes de spray y tenía claro que trabajaría principalmente en las calles y no en galerías. Solo ahora disfruto también trabajando en mi estudio.
Naturally my mission became to get fame, to represent my crew, the homies from my hood and to develop a good letter style. It was always about competition and the rewarding moments when taking pictures of your night’s work the next day.
When I started to professionally focus on my art in 2018 I could draw on my experience of working with spray cans for so many years already and it was clear that I would work primarily on the streets and not in the gallery. It is only now that I find joy in working in my studio as well.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del arte urbano y lo que menos?
What do you like most about street art and what do you like least?
El espacio público está lleno de normas y reglamentos y a menudo se utiliza para influir en nosotros con publicidad. En cambio, debería tratarse como un patio de recreo para todos y todos deberíamos tener voz y voto en su diseño, para que pueda devolvernos la inspiración y convertirse en un reflejo de nosotros mismos. Me encanta tomarme la libertad de pintar donde quiera.
La desventaja es que hay que tener cuidado de no ser descubierto y enfrentarse a un castigo. Nuestras leyes protegen la propiedad antes que la libertad, pero, oye… ¡solo es pintura!.
The public space is full of rules and regulations and often used to influence us with advertising. Instead it should be treated as a playground for everybody and we should all have a say in designing it so it can give back inspiration and become a reflection of ourselves. I love to just take the freedom to paint anywhere I want.
The downside is you got to be careful to not getting caught and face punishment. Our laws protect property before freedom but hey… it’s just paint!!.

Me complace contribuir a un archivo cada vez más amplio de artistas que trabajan en las calles. Las generaciones futuras valorarán la información sobre todas las diferentes formas de arte que se desarrollan en el espacio público. Este movimiento artístico subversivo y sin límites acabará obteniendo el reconocimiento institucional y, con suerte, nunca perderá su carácter rebelde.
I am happy to contribute to a growing archive of artists working on the streets. A future generation will value information on all the different art forms happening in public space. This boundless, subversive art movement will eventually gain institutional recognition and hopefully never lose its rebellious character.

Era 1994, y dos compañeros de clase y yo decidimos pintar graffitis en la fachada de una nueva estación de tren que estaba a punto de inaugurarse. Conseguir botes de spray no fue fácil, ya que no teníamos ninguna experiencia con ellos. Cada uno pintó un nombre que nos parecía molón directamente en el edificio de la plataforma, con un estilo infantil, en el mejor sentido de la palabra. Por supuesto, los borraron antes de la inauguración y nunca hicimos fotos.
Mirando atrás, me parece muy gracioso lo ingenuo e inocente que era entonces, sin sospechar que más tarde vaciaría miles de botes de spray.
It was 1994, and two classmates and I decided to paint pieces on the facade of a new train station building, which was about to open. Getting hold of spray cans wasn’t easy, as we had absolutely no experience with them. Each of us painted a name we thought was cool directly onto the platform building – toy styles, in the best sense of the word. Of course, they were buffed before the opening, and we never took any pictures.
Looking back, I find it really funny how naive and innocent I was back then, never suspecting that I would later empty thousands of spray cans.

El graffiti es la madre de todo el arte callejero. Sin los pioneros del graffiti, que mostraron el camino para ocupar el espacio público, y sin los numerosos escritores que convirtieron el stylewriting en un fenómeno global, no existiría el arte callejero tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día. Mi práctica artística tiene sus raíces en el estilo de escritura del graffiti. De joven vi cientos de veces el documental Stylewars, de Tony Silver y Henry Chalfant, de 1983, fascinado por los coloridos trenes pintados que traqueteaban entre las ruinas del Bronx. Cada vez que cojo un bote de spray, intento evocar la sensación que tuve al ver esta película.
The mother of all street art is graffiti. Without the graffiti pioneers showing a way to occupy public space and the many writers making stylewriting a global phenomenon there would be no street art as we know it today. My art practice is rooted in graffiti stylewriting. As a youth I watched the documentary ‚Stylewars‘ by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant from 1983 a hundred times, fascinated by the colorful painted trains rattling through the ruins of the Bronx. Every time I pick up a spraycan I try to refer to the feeling I had when watching this film.
