¿De dónde viene tu apodo?

Where does your pseudonym come from?

Cuando empecé en el mundo del graffiti, solía dibujar diferentes palabras y nombres que veía. Jugaba mucho al Need for Speed Underground en la PlayStation 2 y me fijé en la palabra «Nismo» que aparecía en el lateral del Nissan Skyline naranja de la portada. En aquel momento no sabía muy bien qué significaba, pero me gustaban las letras y cómo sonaba, así que empecé a dibujarlo y a jugar con las formas y los estilos de las letras. Al final cambié la S por una Z para darle un toque diferente y me quedé con ese nombre.

When I first got into graffiti I would sketch different words and names that I saw. I was playing a lot of Need for Speed Underground on PlayStation2 and I noticed the word Nismo on the side of the orange Nissan Skyline on the cover. I didn’t really know what it meant at the time but I liked the letters and how it sounded so I started sketching it and playing around with letter formations and styles. I eventually changed the S to Z to switch it up a bit and I stuck with that name.

 

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a pintar?

What motivated you to get started painting?

Empecé a interesarme por el graffiti cuando entré en el instituto. Veía tags por todas partes y quería saber más y ser capaz de hacer lo mismo. Poco después, el hermano de un amigo me regaló un ejemplar del libro Graffiti Planet, de Ket. Analicé ese libro, estudié cada obra e intenté imitar cada estilo en mi cuaderno de bocetos. Fue entonces cuando empecé a comprender en qué consistía el graffiti. Cuando empecé a pintar con más regularidad y a conocer a más gente del mundillo, me enganché y quise aprender y mejorar todo lo que pudiera, algo que sigo intentando hacer hoy en día.

I first became interested in graffiti around the time I started secondary school. I would see tags around and wanted to know more and be able to do the same. Soon after that my friend’s brother gave me a copy of Ket’s book Graffiti Planet. I dissected that book, studied every piece and tried to mimic each style in my sketchbook. It was then that I started to see what graffiti was about. When I started painting more regularly and getting to know more people in the scene I was hooked and wanted to learn and improve as much as I could, which I’m still trying to do now.

 

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del graffiti y lo que menos?

What do you like most about graffiti and what do you like least?

Me encantan las conexiones que se crean y los lugares a los que te lleva el graffiti si te dedicas a ello. Sigo sintiendo que solo estoy empezando, pero he conocido a algunas de las mejores personas, he vivido algunas de las situaciones más extrañas y he hecho algunos de mis mejores amigos, todo gracias al graffiti. Lo que menos me gusta son algunas de las políticas y los egos. Eso y trepar por las espinas, lo odio.

I love the connections you make and where graffiti will take you if you stick at it. I still feel like I’m only getting started but I have met some of the best people, been in some of the most bizarre situations, and made some of my closest friends all because of graffiti. What I like least is some of the politics and egos. That and climbing through thorns, hate that.

Creo que es genial. Es fantástico ver cómo la gente crea cosas como esta y ofrece a otras personas la oportunidad de compartir su historia con los demás. Estoy encantado de formar parte de ello.

I think it’s sick. It’s cool to see people putting things like this together and giving people the opportunity to share their story with others. I’m delighted to be a part of it.

¿Te acuerdas de la primera pieza?

Do you remember the first piece?

Creo que mi primera obra fue en un edificio abandonado cerca de la casa de un amigo. Hice un Nizmo amarillo en una escalera, lo cual fue ambicioso ahora que lo pienso, ya que todavía me cuesta hacer piezas inclinadas. Recuerdo que me encantó. Hace poco encontré algunas fotos y, por supuesto, después de tantos años me parece horrible. Pero sigue siendo una de mis obras favoritas, simplemente porque cuando la miro todavía recuerdo la emoción de hacer mi primera obra a todo color.

I think my first piece was in an abandoned building close to my friend’s house. I did a yellow Nizmo down a staircase, which was ambitious now that I think of it as I still struggle with slanted pieces. I remember being delighted with it. I found some photos of it recently and of course seeing it after all these years it looks awful. But it’s still one of my favourite pieces, purely because when I look at it I still remember the buzz of doing my first full colour piece.
