Why is your tag CON?

CON era un apodo de mis amigos que me pusieron antes de que pintara. Era corto para mi apellido Irlandés, por lo que lo lleve este tiempo.

CON was a nickname my friends called me years ago before I was even painting. It was short for my Irish last name, so I just ran with it.

What do you try to say with your graffiti?

No tengo ninguna agenda con la pintura. Tan sólo cualquier cosa que he hecho para permanecer cuerdo. Hoy en día intento pintar un par de veces al mes, dependiendo del horario y otros plazos artísticos en los que tengo que centrarme. Estoy a gusto al haber cubierto en algún momento de mi carrera todos los aspectos de la pintura, por lo que no tengo ninguna cosa que demostrar. Sólo lo disfruto y paso tiempo con mis colegas haciendolo.

I don’t have any agenda with painting. It’s just something I’ve always done to stay sane. Nowadays, I try to paint a couple times a month, depending upon my schedule and other art deadlines I have to focus on. I’m comfortable that I covered every aspect of painting at some point in my career, so I don’t have anything to prove at this point. I’m just enjoying it and the time spent with friends doing it.

¿Qué te motivó para empezar a ser un escritor de graffiti?

What motivated you to get started being a graffiti writer?

Durante los tres primeros años cuando empecé apuntar en Baltimore a principios de los años 90, me centré mayormente en el bombing y no pinte ninguna pieza. Cuando no estaba centrado en ir en el aspecto de «toda la ciudad», era un tio que pintaba personajes en trenes de mercancías al lado de mis compañeros los cuales hacían piezas. No me sentía agosto con mis letras todo el tiempo, por lo que me centre en poder aprender el control, haciendo tags y personajes. Me entretenía a mi mismo aprendiendo el estilo histórico de Baltimore y practique haciendo bocetos. Esto era antes de internet, por lo que esto era un trabajo y descubrí hacer lo que me llenaba de motivación y de diversión.

Ahora estoy centrado totalmente en piezas. y la historia avanza, tu eres mas viejo y tienes mas responsabilidades que ocupan tu tiempo, por lo que podría ser tan despreocupado y temerario.

For the first three years when I started out painting in Baltimore in the early 90’s, I focused mostly on street bombing and didn’t paint any pieces. When I wasn’t focused on the going “all city” aspect, I was the guy painting characters on freight trains next to my partners who were already doing pieces. I wasn’t comfortable with my letters at the time, so I focused on learning can control, doing tags and characters. I busied myself learning Baltimore’s style history and practiced doing sketches. This was all pre-internet, so there was a lot of footwork and discovery to do which was a huge motivation and part of the fun.

I’m focused entirely on piecing now. As the story goes, you get older and have more responsibilities that take up your time, so I couldn’t be as carefree and reckless.

Can you talk about this as the graffiti in your city?

A pesar de que Baltimore y DC están a menos de 45 minutos, sus estilos son completamente diferentes. Ambas son ciudades de la costa este y comparten una historia de graffiti muy antigua al igual que NYC y Philadelphia.

Las escenas han pasado por muchos ciclos, con la ventaja de ganar a veces, o para retroceder al aparecer nueva oleada de escritores. Even though Baltimore and DC are less than 45 minutes apart, their styles are completely different. Both east coast cities share a very old graffiti history on par with NYC and Philadelphia.

The scenes have gone through many cycles, with the buff winning at times, only to be beaten back by a wave of new writers. The events of 9-11 really stepped up security in DC. Freight train traffic started to diminish, especially with larger industrial and manufacturing plants closing in Baltimore.
